Jordan Henderson says Jack Grealish understood Gareth Southgate’s reasoning for taking him off after playing just half an hour of England’s win against Denmark.
Jordan Henderson said: “You speak to Jack and he understands the situation. It’s about the team and we are here to win at the end of the day. We changed formation and I thought Jack did brilliantly when he came on and played his part, but then Kieran came on and stiffened things up a little bit at the back, we changed formation to a five. Jack understands, he’s in there over the moon, and like I say, this is bigger than any individual, it’s a group effort and we sometimes need to make hard decisions.”
Henderson also came on from the bench, helping turn the game in England’s favour after being introduced in the 95th minute as the Danes tired.
Gareth Southgate said: “We felt the team were playing so there is a risk you feel the need to make changes and affect the game when the team are playing well and maybe you don’t need to do too much. All of the players who came into the game had a positive impact and it gave us a chance to have some freshness of course. Sometimes it is bolder to do nothing because the risk is if you don’t do anything it can go against you but we were causing problems and creating chances.”
