Leander Dendoncker
Aston Villa midfielder Leander Dendoncker’s future remains uncertain as he contemplates extending his stay with loan club Anderlecht beyond this summer. Despite having a year left on his contract with Villa, Dendoncker’s potential continuation at Anderlecht would require a significant salary reduction. The Belgian midfielder, who joined Villa from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2022, has been a regular fixture in the Belgian Pro League, making 43 appearances and scoring four goals, while also captaining the team for part of the season.
Leander Dendoncker said: “That I no longer fit into the plan at Villa is a bitter pill to swallow, but also something I have to accept. Villa is doing very well, with an incredible manager who I can’t say a bad word about. He is the best coach I have ever worked with. I have one more year of contract. I’m going back to England in the summer and then we’ll see. In terms of stability, it’s not ideal. Certainly not with two small children. It’s not pleasant. I have just turned 30. That’s when you start thinking about what you’re going to do after your career. I still have a few years ahead of me. I want to end in style and not regret anything.”
Dendoncker’s comments highlight the challenges he faces as he considers his next steps. The option for Anderlecht to purchase him for £7 million this summer seems unlikely, yet the possibility of staying remains if Villa agrees to release him early and Dendoncker accepts a pay cut. His desire to remain at Anderlecht, where he began his career, reflects both personal and professional considerations, particularly given his age and family situation.
Dendoncker’s situation underscores the complexities players face as they approach the latter stages of their careers, balancing professional ambitions with personal commitments. As Villa continues to thrive under its current management, Dendoncker’s future will depend on negotiations between the clubs and his willingness to adapt to new terms.
