Adam Smith Bournemouth

Adam Smith reveals AFC Bournemouth ‘totally different’ under Andoni Iraola #AFCB

The club made a bold move in the summer to replace Gary O’Neil with the sought-after Iraola, when his contract expired at Rayo Vallecano. Iraola, a former Spain international, spent most of his playing career in Bilbao with Athletic Club, where he made over 500 appearances. Smith recently passed the 350-game milestone at Cherries, with Iraola the seventh different boss he has played under at Dean Court. During his loan spell in 2010-11, the Tottenham Hotspur youngster played for Eddie Howe and then Lee Bradbury. Smith then signed from Spurs permanently in 2014, again under Howe, before going on to feature regularly for Jason Tindall, Jonathan Woodgate, Scott Parker and O’Neil. The 32-year-old has recently enjoyed a run back in the starting XI under Iraola, impressing at right-back having played second fiddle to new signing Max Aarons for much of the campaign. Asked how different things have been on a day-to-day basis since Iraola’s arrival, Cherries’ first ever overseas boss, Smith told the Daily Echo: “Yes, it probably is (completely different). “We are in most days, so there are less days off. Training is still intense but not as hard, but we train mostly every day. “Everything is totally different, so I think that is why I think it took us a bit of time to adapt.” Asked what his initial reaction was when he heard Iraola was being hired to replace O’Neil over the summer, Smith recalled: “It was just a big shock, to be honest, as I’m sure it was for everyone else. “But I read up on him. He played under (Marcelo) Bielsa and it looks like he had a great career as well. “I was definitely excited for him to come in and to work with him.” Iraola spent most of his playing career featuring at right-back, the same position as Smith, before retiring in 2016. “It is good that he has a better understanding of what me and Maxy go through, him playing as a full-back,” said Smith. “He can definitely help us with certain aspects of the game.” Smith has now featured in eight Premier League seasons, having debuted in the competition for Spurs in 2012. In Cherries’ first top-flight campaigns, Smith nailed down his starting spot, rarely missing a fixture, unless injured on suspended. Last season the defender played in 37 of Cherries’ 38 Premier League matches, with his tally in the competition now approaching 200. Discussing the differences he has noticed over the years, Smith said: “Back in the day, you felt like the top five teams had wingers who were dangerous, but now it is every team in the whole league. “The left winger is probably always their best player, if I’m honest! “For me and Maxy it is really tough, with some of the wingers we come up against. “It’s what the Premier League is now, with scouting all over the world, they are bringing the best players here. It is going to be tough every game.” Smith will hope to keep his place when Cherries go to Nottingham Forest on Saturday (3pm).

AFC Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola on reunion with Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta #AFCB

Arteta’s Arsenal ended up comfortable 4-0 winners at Vitality Stadium, following goals from Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, and Ben White. A lot of the build-up to the fixture in the national press and on social media focused on Iraola and Arteta’s shared footballing past, the pair playing in the same Antiguoko team in their native Basque country. Aside from a single game together for Spain’s under-21s, it was the last time the pair crossed paths, prior to this summer’s meeting of all Premier League managers. Asked about the reunion following the game, Iraola responded: “Once the game starts, you forgot about these things. “You focus on the sporting side. I congratulated him and I will just talk to him right now as soon as I finish. “But during the game at the end, you forget about these things and then you can complete it.” Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is also from the Basque province of Gipuzkoa, as well as ex-Wolves manager Julien Lopetegui, who left the Premier League this summer.

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola on goal against Brighton and positive performance despite loss #AFCB

Dominic Solanke lofted the ball into an empty net after Ryan Christie had pickpocketed goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but Cherries were unable to hold on, Milos Kerkez’s own goal levelling scores before the break. Karou Mitoma came off the bench to score twice and turn the game around in the hosts’ favour. Verbruggen saw a lot of the ball in the first period, being tasked with building moves for Brighton. The goalie was allowed to dwell on the ball, but Christie picked the right moment to tackle the Dutchman and set up Solanke for the opener. Cherries anticipated this, according to Iraola, who told the Daily Echo: “We knew when you come here they are going to try and build up. “We have a lot of decisions to make. “We decided to go man-to-man, taking risks and the only free man was the keeper. “We had to decide very well the moment where you have to run to the keeper, otherwise they find the spare man very easily and they are out. “I think we did really well, not only on this play, but overall during the game. We lost because of other reasons.” It took Brighton just 15 seconds to take the lead in the second half, leaving a shellshocked Cherries struggling to find a response. “I think we had the chances, especially with Antoine, the two chances he had for us,” continued Iraola. “He was very good from the bench. “Also the one that they cleared from the line and we had some chances there. “But it was much more difficult, because when they don’t have the need to attack you, they can play with the ball, they can attract you and it is much more difficult to play against Brighton once they are winning. “For me the key is having the first half where we were winning, you have to make more damage.”
Andoni Iraola

#PLStories- Andoni Iraola frustrated by officiating in Brighton loss and lack of penalties #AFCB

Cherries’ wait for a spot-kick long precedes Iraola’s time at the club, failing to be given a penalty in the entirety of last season. Iraola’s men had a few shouts to referee John Brooks for a penalty during their 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Dominic Solanke went down under a challenge of Pervis Estupinan early on, before Simon Adingra’s hand connected with the face of Marcus Tavernier, also in the first half. On the flip side, both Liverpool and Swansea City have been awarded penalties against Cherries earlier this campaign, the one at Anfield particularly contentious when Dominik Szoboszlai went down under Joe Rothwell’s tackle. “I don’t know what has to happen to be given a penalty,” Iraola told the Daily Echo, after the loss at Brighton. “A slap in the face, clearly. There are people watching on TV and then we concede a penalty, I remember the one at Anfield, a light touch.” Iraola and coach Pablo de la Torre were often seen discussing decisions with fourth official Peter Bankes during the contest, who was in consultation with video assistant Michael Oliver. “We were winning 1-0 and they are key decisions that are very important,” said Iraola. “There was a check they did on Dom after five minutes, a possible penalty. I think it is a push. “But they say it has to be something else for a penalty. But you see the one we conceded at Liverpool. “It is difficult, but I understand this one because it is a push, but it is not enough for a penalty. “But not the second one. The second one he (Adingra) just slaps the face of Tavernier without any reason. “Maybe he lost his mind for one second, but sometimes red cards are like this. “It just costs one second. Now it is probably not the referees, but the ones watching. “I think that if you don’t concede this penalty, you are free in the box to slap players. “This cannot happen. It is not like there is a reason why. I think it is pretty obvious.” Cherries have slipped to 17th in the Premier League table over the weekend, with no wins from their opening six matches. They turn their attentions to the Carabao Cup in midweek, when Championship Stoke City come to Vitality Stadium.

#PLStories- Andoni Iraola reveals loan move of Jaidon Anthony to Leeds United was not controlled by him #AFCB

Anthony had featured regularly under new boss Iraola, starting three of the first four games this season. However, after Cherries moved late to sign winger Luis Sinisterra on loan, Anthony was suddenly deemed surplus to requirements, shipped out to Leeds United in the Championship for the rest of the season. Iraola explained earlier in the summer how he has little to do with transfer dealings, leaving that to the likes of Richard Hughes and Neill Blake. Asked how much of a say he had in the shock Sinisterra and Anthony swap deal, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “It is a situation that happened on the last day of the window. “The club thought that we could be stronger adding a player like Luis Sinisterra. “He was on Saturday (at Brentford) watching the game. Now he is going with the national team, so we will not have him for the next 10 to 12 days. “But it is another player we have who can make the difference, starting from wide. It is a good addition for us.” Quizzed on if he supported the idea of Anthony going to Leeds, Iraola added: “It is a decision he had to make. “I tried to help him as much as I could, because Jaidon, I love him as a person and as a player. “Of the four games he has been with me, he has started three. He was very good in pre-season. “But he had to take the decision, because we have a lot of options there out wide. “It is the decision he finally took and I hope the best, because he deserves it. “I know he is going to play very well there in Leeds and I hope he returns next season even better as a player.” Luis Sinisterra joined Cherries on deadline day (Image: PA) Anthony was with Cherries’ squad in the team hotel, getting ready to face Brentford in the Premier League the following day, before his sudden departure. Detailing his conversations with the 23-year-old, Iraola said: “I tried to be as honest as I could, because he deserves it. “I had no problem if he was to stay here, no problem at all. “And you can see because he has played with me, he has started. He is a reliable player. “You tell him to do this, he will do it or he will try to do it. He will make mistakes, like everyone else, but he is a very reliable player. “He had to take the decision knowing the players he will be fighting for in his position. “The option he had also I think was really good, to a very good team. “He decided to take that route. It’s a loan, so I hope he comes back with us, for sure he will, like a better player. “As a person, he is a top, top guy. I think he deserved all the honesty, as much as I could. “I tried to help him, but he was the one with the final decision.”
Thomas Frank

#PLStories- Thomas Frank praised Brentford mentality after Bournemouth draw #BRENTFORDFC

Mbeumo’s fourth of the season cancelled out goals from Dominic Solanke and David Brooks after Mathias Jensen put Brentford in the lead for Brentford in the first half. And Frank praised his team’s second-half display which saw them extend their unbeaten start to the season, with six points on the board. “First half we were good but second half we were fantastic,” Frank said. “I think we ran over Bournemouth in the second half and we created chance after chance. "The only chance I can remember from Bournemouth was the goal, and that was a mistake from Rico (Henry). "But the mentality in this team is incredible. What character. They never give up, they will never die. "After we got a more than well-deserved equaliser, we still went for it, with centre-backs Nathan Collins and Kristoffer Ajer still overlapping. "I am very proud of the team's performance. "If we play this 100 times, we win it 98, draw one, that was (Saturday), and lose the other time, because there were so many big chances."
Jaidon Anthony

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony on assist for David Brooks against Swansea in League cup #AFCB

Anthony provided a fantastic assist for Brooks to equalise after Cherries trailed 1-0 in Wales thanks to Matt Grimes’ first-half penalty. The away side then took a lead through Hamed Traore, before the hosts again levelled scores via Jamie Patterson. In the end it was substitute Ryan Christie who had the last say, finding the bottom corner in the 90th minute to send Cherries through to the next round. Discussing his assist for Cherries’ first, Anthony insisted that Brooks deserved the credit for applying the finishing touch. He told the Daily Echo: “It was a good ball and to be fair it's not an easy finish either, on his weak foot. “I think he's had a really good pre-season and a start to the season in front of goal. “I'm happy he could put it away and help us to win.” Brooks’ goal came about after Cherries won the ball high up the pitch, with Anthony believing the strike to be representative of the way Andoni Iraola wants Cherries to play. “I think the manager wants us to be aggressive in every game,” explained the 23-year-old. “It's a perfect example of the high press and what that can do. “Win it back and then attacking pass, and we get the goal - happy days. “The most important thing was getting through to the next round. “The first half, we knew we weren't at the races and we knew we had to react in the second half. “I think obviously the second goal is probably a bit unfortunate, but I think we deserved what we got in the end.” The draw for the third round will be made on Wednesday evening, following the conclusion of second round ties. Teams will not be regionalised, meaning Cherries could be handed another lengthy trek. Sides competing in Europe enter at this stage of the competition, with third round ties being staged the week commencing Monday, September 25.
Andoni Iraola

#PLStories- Andoni Iraola on first win as AFC Bournemouth boss in league cup #AFCB

Cherries had to come from behind to triumph 3-2 in south Wales, Ryan Christie netting a stoppage-time winner after earlier strikes from David Brooks and Hamed Traore. Matt Grimes had put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the eighth minute, a lead they held until half-time. It marks a first victory for the Spaniard since joining the club over the summer, after three Premier League games so far without a win. Ryan Christie fired home a late winner (Image: PA) Asked if the feeling was relief at eventually getting over the line against Championship opposition in Swansea, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “I think it was a game with two very different parts, two very different halves. “I think we started very bad. Probably the worst way to start, conceding a penalty and we were very slow to move the ball in the first half. “We only had to improve in the second half. I think the rhythm was different in the second half. “We moved the ball much quicker, the rhythm was much higher. And then we were in control of the game. “I think we should have probably won the game earlier, but in the end this is the cup and sometimes you have to suffer.” Iraola’s frustration with the first-half display was evident by his triple substitution at the break. “It was about not only the names and the subs, it was about the attitude, the willingness to attack the spaces, to be more direct, not receive the ball only facing our goal. “To be more aware of the situations, open the game and the pitch a little bit more. “I think especially with Milos (Kerkez) and Jaidon (Anthony), we were opening the left wing very well and then we could find Junior (Traore) and Philip (Billing) inside and from there we were much better.” Although Iraola made seven changes to the starting line-up which had faced Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, it was a strong selection full of players who have featured in the league this season, aside from debutant Andrei Radu in goal. Discussing the importance he places in staying in the cup competitions, Iraola said: “In the end it is not that you make changes or play a weaker team in the cup and they give you an extra (free) weekend. “No, they are not giving you anything. “At the end, it is also a way of very good training for us and in the next round also we will try to win the game, because at the end you never know when a good run can happen. “You have to try it every single year.”
Andoni Iraola

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola on loss to Tottenham Hotspur #AFCB

Cherries fell to a 2-0 defeat to Spurs, with goals from James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, either side of half-time. Shortly before Kulusevski’s goal, Iraola made a double change with Jaidon Anthony and Hamed Traore replacing Justin Kluivert and Christie, the latter having impressed in the first half particularly. Reflecting on the defeat, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “After the game you think and probably I shouldn’t have taken Ryan out from the game. “Especially without the ball, he was pressing really well. He was doing a good amount. “Probably I wanted to go a little bit more offensive, but we were worse I think from that point. “I don’t know if it’s after the subs or after the 2-0, because it was just one minute later. But probably until the 62nd minute, we were playing well against a very good team. “We were having our chances, I was quite happy with the performance. “From there, we couldn’t keep the intensity and they were controlling the game much easier.” He added: “I was disappointed with the end of the game, after 2-0. “I think until 2-0, the team was playing well. It looked like in this moment we had the chances to score for 1-1, but from there we lacked a little bit of intensity. “They were more comfortable on the ball and we didn’t finish the game well.” Cherries are still searching for their first win, with one point from their opening three fixtures. They head to Swansea City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, before travelling to Brentford in the Premier League next weekend. “We knew from the beginning we had a really tough schedule to start,” said Iraola. “But now we also have some important players out with injuries. “But we have to keep competing and try and take points from every game.”
Tyler Adams Leeds

#PLStories- Tyler Adams explains why he chose to join AFC Bournemouth after leaving Leeds United #AFCB

Adams over the weekend completed his switch to the south coast from Leeds United, for a reported £23million. The midfielder made 26 appearances for Leeds last season, but could not prevent them from suffering relegation into the Championship. However, he has quickly found himself back in the top tier, with Cherries. “I’m very excited to say the least,” the 24-year-old told afcbTV. “The excitement of the Premier League last year was amazing. It was a dream come true to have an opportunity to represent a team and obviously how the season ended wasn’t to my liking. “Now to have the opportunity to join another amazing club like Bournemouth, I’m very excited to get started.” Asked what he learnt about the Premier League from playing in it last season, the USA captain added: “That it’s the best league in the world. It definitely doesn’t lack quality. “Week in, week out you’re playing games against the highest calibre of players, highest calibre of managers and it throws something new at you every opportunity that you get. “Growing up, all I watched was the Premier League. So last year, having that opportunity to fulfil that dream was amazing.” Adams had previously been linked with a move away to Chelsea earlier this summer, but has now completed his switch to Cherries. “A lot of things attracted me to Bournemouth,” he explained. “The manager himself is one of the up and coming young managers in the world. “He was actually playing for NYCFC when I was playing at New York Red Bulls and coming through the system there, so having a little bit of familiarity there. “The amazing sporting director (Richard Hughes) and CEO (Neill Blake), through so many conversations about how I’ll be used in this amazing project that they’re building here was very exciting as well.” He added: “The club’s ambition is something that matches mine for sure. “They want to take their game to the top and they have people in and around the club now that are able to do that. “When they showed that ambition through the owner, the CEO and the sporting director, now having an ambitious coach as well, attracting players, which is very important obviously to the succession of the team, it excited me a lot.” During his time with New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig, Adams has already racked up trophies including the MLS Supporters Shield and DFB-Pokal. Discussing those past experiences he can bring into the young squad at Cherries, the Wappingers Falls-born talent said: “I’ve been extremely fortunate for some of the clubs that I’ve played in and some of the situations that I’ve been involved in. “Winning a Supporters Shield in MLS at a very young age inside a very good team, going to Germany and playing in a couple of cup finals and having the opportunity to win one as well. “I’ve been very fortunate I would say. The teams that I’ve been on have been very, very good. “And taking those experiences and taking that hunger to want to win titles, hopefully I can bring that here and start to push the club forward.”
Jurgen Klopp Liverpool

#PLStories- Jurgen Klopp unhappy with Alexis Mac Allister red card #LFC

The former Brighton & Hove Albion man was given his marching orders after catching Ryan Christie with a late tackle early in the second half at Anfield. Liverpool led 2-1 at the time, going on to secure a 3-1 victory, cancelling out Antoine Semenyo's early opener. Asked about Mac Allister's red card, Liverpool boss Klopp said: "I saw it back. The amount of times I got asked about it shows already it’s worth discussing it again, which we will probably be. "I asked Macca and he said ‘I touched him, but not really’. That was all he told me and then after the game I saw him back and if you are going to have a list of points we need to give a red card, I think the majority, besides contact, no other box is actually ticked at that moment. "It is a decision I think we all agree if he gives a yellow card, VAR will not overturn it and now they have given a red card VAR is not overturning it because the contact means there is no clear and obvious mistake. "But I think the punishment, 40 minutes with 10 men today, is already punishment enough. We have to talk to the authorities."
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil on losing game against Manchester United and referee #WOLVESFC

O'Neil regularly complained about refereeing decisions during his spell in charge of Cherries, the Dorset club the only team in the Premier League not to be awarded a spot-kick last term. With Wolves 1-0 down to Manchester United on Monday night, Red Devils debutant goalkeeper Andre Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic deep into time added on, but Simon Hooper did not react and VAR Michael Salisbury deemed there was no foul, with an incredulous O’Neil instead booked for his reaction. The hosts closed out the narrow victory at Old Trafford. O’Neil said after the match he though Onana was trying to take Kalajdzic’s head off, and then revealed he had received an immediately apology from Premier League referees’ boss Moss. “Having just spoken to Jon Moss, fair enough he came straight out and said it was a blatant penalty and it should have been given,” O’Neil said. “I sometimes feel bad. I’ve spent a lot of my day with him trying to understand the new guidelines and how to not get myself booked which I’ve failed in, but fair play to Jon in coming out. “He said it was clear and obvious and he can’t believe the on-field referee didn’t give it and he can’t believe VAR didn’t intervene. It’s probably made me feel worse to be honest because once you know you’re right you feel worse about leaving with nothing.” O'Neil replaced Julen Lopetegui as Wolves boss last week, having been sacked by Cherries in June, with Andoni Iraola appointed.
Andoni Iraola

#PLStories- Andoni Iraola on Cherries’ change of style against West Ham #AFCB

Trailing to Jarrod Bowen’s goal early in the second half, Iraola turned to his bench with forwards Justin Kluivert, Kieffer Moore and Antoine Semenyo all introduced. Cherries eventually carved out an equaliser, Dominic Solanke tucked home after latching onto Semenyo’s wayward shot. Reflecting on the 1-1 draw, Iraola said: “The first half for me was too slow. We were on the ball but we weren’t really creating chances. We improved after. “Especially in the second half I think we were more direct, because we couldn’t find spaces in the middle. "It’s difficult, especially when we were losing the game, we closed everything inside and we had to go through the outside, play a little bit more direct, crossing, and I think we were better when we did this. “With Kieff, with Justin, with Antoine, who helped us a lot. In the second half, I think we finished better. “I think we were better when we were more direct. “We had to go more direct and we ended the game with Kieff and Dom up front, with Justin and Semenyo. The four of them could be a number nine. “It was risky, but we were losing. At the end Joe (Rothwell) and Phil had to cover a lot of space. “But I think once the game opened a little bit and we were more direct and there were more spaces for everything, I think we were better.” Asked if he got the performance he expected from his side in his first competitive game in charge, Iraola added: “You always expect to play very good and to win the games. But for sure West Ham expected the same. “There were some positives, but also some things that we have to improve. “I was quite critical with the team during half-time, because we were moving the ball very, very slow. “They were just shuffling and sliding and we couldn’t find spaces. “We improved in the second half, not as much as we’d like, but I think we were in the positive tendency.”
Jaidon Anthony

#PLStories- Jaidon Anthony reacts to AFC Bournemouth’s 1-1 draw with West Ham #AFCB

Anthony played the first hour of the contest, coming off as Cherries trailed to Jarrod Bowen’s curled effort from outside the box. Dominic Solanke popped up eight minutes from time to ensure the spoils from Andoni Iraola’s first game in charge of Cherries would be shared. Speaking to the Daily Echo after the game, Anthony commented: “Tough fight. “They're a good side, they're good at what they do. “But, probably a good point. “It's a positive start. “Obviously we wanted the win, but, they're really good at what they do and it was a tough game. “Like I said, I think we got what we deserved and went in the right direction.” Asked if he felt a difference between the intensity of pre-season and competitive football, Anthony replied: “Maybe. “The manager’s pushed us hard in pre-season, so I feel like we put a lot into that. “It was a big day for us today. “They're really good at what they do, they make it hard. I feel like we brought up a good fight and got what we deserved.” Anthony and Cherries’ focus now turns to a trip to Anfield next weekend, when they face Liverpool on Saturday, August 19.
Andoni Iraola

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola on new signing Max Aarons #AFCB

Signed on Thursday for an initial £7million from Norwich City, Aarons has only had one training session with his new teammates. Cherries start their Premier League campaign with the visit of West Ham to Vitality Stadium tomorrow afternoon (3pm). The absence of Adam Smith and Ryan Fredericks means head coach Iraola has a headache at right-back, with Aarons the only fit senior player who is a natural at the position. Aarons did not feature in any of Norwich City’s pre-season friendlies this summer after it was made abundantly clear that he was looking to move to pastures anew. The 23-year-old had entered the final 12 months of his deal at Carrow Road, and after 213 appearances for the Canaries, had felt he had accomplished all he could with Norwich. Whilst Aarons was absent for Norwich’s pre-season fixtures, he did compete for England’s under-21s this summer, helping the Young Lions lift the under-21 European Championships. The injured Smith missed the final pre-season of the season, with winger Jaidon Anthony deployed in his stead. Iraola mentioned that Anthony was again in his thoughts at right-back, but that he could also turn to Chris Mepham if he needed a more defensively-sound alternative. Primarily a centre-back, Mepham has previously played as a full-back under former Cherries managers. James Hill is another centre-back that has moonlighted as a right-back, both for loan club Hearts last year and for Cherries this pre-season. Asked if Aarons was available to start against West Ham, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “Yes, I think it's an option. “It's an option. “We can start also with Jaidon (Anthony). “We can go with Chris (Mepham) if we want to go more defensive. “We have two, three options that we could use. “But first I would like to see how they train today and take the final decision.” The deal for Aarons could potential rise to £13million. The England under-21 international is viewed both as a prospect for the feature, but experienced, having already played 70 times in the Premier League. Discussing his defensive recruit, Iraola shared: “I think for his age, he has already a good bunch of Premier League games. “I think he has been playing in this level. “He has international experience. “He has been playing this summer with national teams. “And I think he will help us straight away, even if he's young. “He's not as young as some of the signings we made. “He has the experience and he will help us for sure.”
David Moyes

#PLStories- Praises reciprocated between AFC Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and West Ham United manager David Moyes #WHUFC #AFCB

The Hammers visit Vitality Stadium tomorrow afternoon (3pm) as the first competitive opponents Iraola will face as Cherries boss. It is not the first time Iraola has crossed paths with the Scot, having played against Moyes on one occasion whilst playing for Athletic Club in La Liga. Moyes managed Athletic’s fierce rivals Real Sociedad for a year, all three Basque derbies ending in ties. Speaking about the man in the opposing dugout this weekend, Iraola stated: “David (Moyes) is a very, very good coach. “He has been really successful. “Past season, they won a European championship. “He also coached in Spain, so I knew him before. “But overall they are a really solid team. “They have quite a lot of options. "They can go more direct, they have very good wingers, they are really good in set pieces. “I think we have to be really focused not to make mistakes because they are the kind of team that if you make one mistake, they score the first goal and then it's very difficult to play against their result.” Praise was reciprocated by Moyes in his own pre-match press conference. The West Ham boss shared: "Bournemouth have always done well and they have a new approach this season under Andoni Iraola. "I think it's always a hard game at Bournemouth, but we had a good win there last year and we hope we can get another one tomorrow." "I made the transition to Spain and it's not easy going to manage in La Liga, just as it won't be easy for him coming to the Premier League, but he must have done something for Bournemouth to appoint him and I'm sure he has the characteristics to adapt. "Andoni is from the Basque Country, where there are really good people, and I'm sure he is one of them."

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola on goalkeepers Andrei Radu and Neto #AFCB

Goalie Radu became the latest addition at Vitality Stadium this summer, joining Cherries on an initial loan from Italian giants Inter Milan. Cherries reportedly hold an option to convert the temporary move to a permanent one in the summer for £7million. The arrival of Radu has allowed Mark Travers to join Stoke City on loan for the season, the highly-rated goalkeeper being given the opportunity of more consistent gametime in order to aid his development. With Iraola’s penchant for knockout competitions and Radu’s notable record of saving penalties, the idea of the goalkeeper being brought in as a shootout specialist for cup campaigns has arisen. However, rather than having Radu serve merely as a back-up to established first choice Neto, Iraola believes the Romanian is more than capable of making the position his own. Asked if Radu had been brought in to serve as a “cup goalkeeper”, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “I think goalkeeping situation, okay, it’s kind of a different position, but we will make the decision for day one. “Then after we will make the decision for day two. “We cannot plan so far ahead because things happen in trainings, performance matters. “I think there was a need on the club because especially I think Mark and the club wanted the situation to be like this. And I think it's good for everyone. “So I think Andrei can help us straight away because he has performed in a high level. He's ready to compete for the position. “And we'll take the decisions day by day, game by game.” Cherries supporters got their first look at Radu last weekend, the goalkeeper coming off the bench to feature in the second half of the 3-1 defeat to Atalanta. FC Lorient visit Dorset as guests for Cherries’ final pre-season friendly, on Saturday, August 5.
Jaidon Anthony

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony hoping to become more ‘complete’ player #AFCB

Winger Anthony signed a five-year deal back in February to confirm his long-term future lies with Cherries, the former Arsenal youngster now entering his second season in the Premier League. Much has changed since Anthony got his first taste of top-flight football against his former club last August, with the man who handed him his Premier League debut, Scott Parker, long gone. Parker’s replacement Gary O’Neil has also moved on, with Basque boss Andoni Iraola in charge at Cherries. With the Spaniard liking his teams to press high and use the full width of the pitch, it appears the change in management could be a good fit for Anthony. When this was put to the wideman, Anthony told the Daily Echo: “Different playing style, different ideas and I'm enjoying it. “It's been a tough pre-season getting to know the way he wants us to play and to be honest we're still learning as we go, but I think we're all enjoying it and combining into what he wants us to do. “I probably played a lot of my minutes last year as a wing-back and doing a lot of defensive work. “Obviously this year we’ve got a different formation and there's a lot of running in behind, but yes, there's a lot of work to be done on my game especially.” Finding himself at Cherries after being released by Arsenal, it has not been a straight forward path to the top for Anthony, who was playing his football on loan in the sixth tier as recently as 2020. “I'm working out every day to improve not just what I'm not so good at,” continued the 23-year-old. “But what I'm very good at as well, to try and become more of a complete player.” Asked if he has any particular goals for the campaign ahead, Anthony remained coy, sharing: “Nothing too specific, but obviously just want to do as well as I can and try and help wherever I can. “There's obviously personal targets I want to try and hit, but my main goal is to help the team in whatever capacity I’m needed.” With every outfielder encouraged to get forward when the opportunity arises, players often have to deputise in unfamiliar positions to help Cherries keep their shape. After playing as a quasi-wing back for much of last season, Anthony is more than willing to help out at the back if needs must. He restarted: “As a team we want to help each other out where we can and if I'm not attacking then I'm going to try and do my best for the team wherever they need me. “If I have to cover, then that's what I'll do. But my job is to try and attack and create chances and that's what I'm trying to do for the team.”
Andoni Iraola

#PLStories- Andoni Iraola wants AFC Bournemouth to sign more midfielders #AFCB

The departure of Jefferson Lerma on a free transfer to Crystal Palace, combined with the sale of Ben Pearson to Stoke City this transfer window has seen Cherries’ numbers in the middle of the park dwindle. Gavin Kilkenny has returned to the first team following a loan spell at Charlton, but the youngster does not seem central to the Basque boss’ plans, whilst Joe Rothwell is still not fully fit after an injury at the end of last term. With Philip Billing injured for the visit of Atalanta, Iraola resorted to playing Ryan Christie beside Lewis Cook as his midfield pairing, the Scot usually deployed behind the striker or on the wing. Iraola also explained there was further experimentation with David Brooks, the Welsh international operating as the number 10 behind Dominic Solanke. Iraola told the Daily Echo: “Right now, especially with Philip being out today and Joe (Rothwell) also being in this recuperation process, we lacked players inside. “But we tried Ryan as a number eight. We tried also Brooksie playing inside. Probably they are not their better positions, but right now I think they can help us there in some moments. And is the time to make this provocation. Expanding further, Iraola told BBC Radio Solent: “I think Ryan I prefer him as a number ten. “I think he's more suited for this position or even from the side coming inside. “But right now with the players we have, he can help us. “He played some minutes also against Maccabi there and I think he's tactically smart, so he can be valuable anywhere.” Asked what type of midfielder he would like to see signed, the former Athletic Club man continued: “I think we need probably more than one player there. “I think we need different styles, different types of player that can help us in these three positions we use in the midfield. “But right now we have to wait at the end, the club is trying to sign the players. “Like all the teams, but we have to wait for the right situation. “We all think that it's better to wait a little bit more, even if you don't train (with the new players), but at the end you make the right decision with the correct player, the player that suits your style and think is going to be better for the club.” Cherries host FC Lorient next weekend, before starting their Premier League campaign with the visit of West Ham on Saturday, August 12.
Milos Kerkez

#PLStories- Milos Kerkez explains reasoning behind joining AFC Bournemouth #AFCB

Cherries parted with a reported £15.5million to bring the Hungarian left-back to Vitality Stadium, swooping in after it seemed Kerkoz was close to joining Champions League outfit Lazio. Having already worn the famous red and black of AC Milan, the 19-year-old will wear the same colours on the south coast next season. Discussing the move with afcb.co.uk, Kerkez shared: “It's a really warm welcome and I'm really happy and delighted to be here, also my family's, so I'm really, really happy. “We got in touch with Bournemouth and I feel the kind of respect the club and the people showed us, really, that was the big part of me coming here, so was a few busy days, but now that I'm finally here, I'm really happy and excited.”Born in what is now Serbia but opting to play for Hungary internationally, Kerkez believes all young footballers dream of playing in the Premier League. He continued: “It was a big decision, but really, since I was a kid, I believe everyone dreams of playing in the best league in the world. “That’s the Premier League and to have opportunity to come to a club like Bournemouth is a big thing. So I'm really, really happy to be here. “Like I said, really, the respect that me and my family got, really from Bournemouth, the people, they came to visit us at home to talk to us about the project, about the plan, and that was the big thing for me and my family to decide to come here.” Cherries swapped head coaches in June, with rookie boss Gary O’Neil dismissed when highly-rated Andoni Iraola became available. LONG READ: AFC Bournemouth moving away from pragmatism towards ideals with Iraola Iraola’s style of play was another big part of Kerkez’s decision to join Cherries. He restarted: “The coach has a big impact on my move to come here. “He comes from the Spanish League, so also, his philosophy, I like it. “The club's philosophy, his philosophy, I love it. “And that's what makes me come here now.”
Ryan Christie

#PLStories- Ryan Christie keen to extend AFC Bournemouth contract #AFCB

Christie, 28, is heading into the final year of his deal at Vitality Stadium, having arrived from Celtic in the summer of 2021. The Scotland international has made 75 appearances for Cherries, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. He played a key role in clinching promotion from the Championship, before then helping keep the club in the Premier League last season. The hard-working midfielder has featured in both friendly matches under new boss Andoni Iraola so far. He played 90 minutes in the 4-0 win over Hibernian, before again starting and playing the first half of Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv. Christie has previously expressed how settled he feels on the south coast of England, becoming a dad for the first time last month. Asked if there has been any dialogue with the club regarding his future and current contract situation, Christie told the Daily Echo: “No discussions yet, but I’m more than happy (here). “Especially with the baby now, I love living in Bournemouth. It’s a great place to stay and my family is nice and settled as well. “I’m not really thinking about that right now. Obviously the pre-season is pretty tough, so you just need to get the head down and keep working hard. “My main hope is to impress the new boss as much as I can. “If that leads to talks about a new contract, so be it. I’ll be looking forward to that hopefully.” Christie and his fiancée Georgie welcomed a baby boy into the world last month. For Christie, that capped off a busy summer, which had seen him away representing Scotland just five days before his son was born. “It was absolutely amazing, to be fair,” he said, discussing his new arrival. “It was obviously a bit of a whirlwind when he came, but I think we kind of timed it perfectly. “I got back from Scotland camp and two days later we went into labour. “It was nice because I got two weeks at the end of my break just in the house with him getting used to baby life.” Christie’s final game before returning home was the bizarre Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia at Hampden Park. The Highlander was introduced for the closing stages of the 2-0 win, coming onto the pitch at 11.16pm after the game had been delayed due to wet weather in Glasgow. “That was one of the strangest games I’ve been a part of,” Christie admitted. “The rain was absolutely mental and then there was talk of the game being postponed and playing the next morning. “I think everybody was desperate just to get the game done, especially me with a pregnant fiancée at home, waiting for me to get home. So I was watching the clock half the night! “The most important thing is we got a win to round off another very successful camp for us.”
Andoni Iraola

#PLStories- Andoni Iraola wants commitment and involvement from Cherries squad #AFCB

Iraola is into his third full week working with his Cherries squad, having replaced Gary O’Neil as head coach this summer. The Spaniard has taken charge of two matches, during a 10-day training camp in Marbella. Cherries eased to a 4-0 victory over Hibernian, before being beaten 1-0 by Maccabi Tel Aviv. Iraola and his squad are now back in the UK and face three more friendlies before the Premier League gets underway, starting at Southampton on Tuesday. Asked what the main attribute he wants from his players is, Iraola said: “We need commitment especially. “The way we want to play, we need everyone involved. Everyone involved offensively and everyone involved defensively. “That’s one of the things I like more about the players we have. “I think the forward players who played last season, they were really committed. They didn’t give up, they were not one less without the ball and we want to maintain this because we start from there and if everyone is committed, we can survive better.” He added: “Our ideas are more collective. Each player has his own individual things to do but what I do for my team that makes my teammates better, how can I help my team, that’s what I want my players to think.”
Andoni Iraola

#PLStories- Andoni Iraola reveals his playing style for Bournemouth team #AFCB

The high-pressing, intense, front-footed approach has been likened to that his former boss Marcelo Bielsa instilled at Leeds United. In taking Rayo Vallecano up from the second tier of Spanish football to two consecutive seasons finishing mid-table in La Liga, upsetting the biggest teams along the way, Iraola’s style has caught the eye. It ultimately led to Cherries pulling the trigger on Gary O’Neil, despite being happy with the job he was doing. An in-demand Iraola, out of contract and available, was just too good of an opportunity to miss. By pundits and former players, his tactical style has been labelled ‘organised chaos’ and ‘rock and roll football’. The 41-year-old Spaniard was presented to the media for the first time this week and his performance during the half-an-hour press conference could not have been much further from the style many are expecting to see his Cherries team play. Despite not speaking in his first language, Iraola oozed calmness, confidence and control over the room of both local and national journalists. His bosses were also in attendance with Neill Blake, Richard Hughes, Simon Francis and Jim Frevola all watching on for the start of the press call. Iraola dignified every question with a perfectly reasonable answer, but refused to be drawn into any outlandish, headline-grabbing comments, particularly when pushed on his relationship with fellow Premier League bosses Mikel Arteta, Unai Emery or Eddie Howe. There was a humility to Iraola’s tone. Yes, he is now a Premier League head coach, operating amongst peers widely considered to be the best in the world. But with his only previous managerial experience coming with AEK Larnaca, Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano, Iraola insisted he could not yet be classed in the same bracket as other top bosses in the country. “I hope I can be at the level,” he said. As well as fielding many questions about fellow Premier League coaches, the topic often reverted back to style of play. While he cut a controlled figure in the media suite at Vitality Stadium, a few yards away on the pitch itself, he hopes to see a different story from his players. We will get a first glimpse of his new side in action, in a friendly against Hibernian in Marbella next week. But given how he explained his plans and tactical ideals on Wednesday, we already have a good idea of what we are likely to see. Asked if his style could be described as ‘chaos but fun’, Iraola replied: “I don’t like the games to be too controlled. “If you are on the ball for 30 seconds, then they are on the ball for one minute, I prefer, even if we are not so clinical, so sharp, we try to attack as soon as we can. “We open the game. We have a good volume of crosses, of chances. When you want to play high, when you want to arrive, sometimes you will suffer at the back. “But you have to be ready. I think we have good defenders also. We have to stay compact, even if we are high, we are low. “I don’t want to use these words you talked about!” Last season Cherries had the third worst defensive record in the league, conceding 71, not helped by considerably the worst record at defending set pieces. Asked how he plans to fix that, whilst balancing the style of play he is looking to implement, Iraola explained: “Sometimes we make the mistake to think if we play high, you are worse defensively. “My idea is exactly the opposite. I want to play high so the number of chances (against us) is lower. The volume of set pieces we have to defend is lower. So at the end the numbers will be better. “Normally when you analyse the games it looks like it is risky, but I do not agree with this. “It is true that sometimes if you play high and if the timing is good, you can give away a one against one against your keeper. “But they are the things we have to control, we have to work on. “I feel as a coach on the outside safer when we are far from our box than the opposite.” Some of Iraola’s ideas do cross over into what O’Neil was working on improving during his spell in charge. Certain games saw Cherries try to regain the ball high up the pitch, whilst also playing direct to pacy wingers. Quizzed on whether it will take time for the players to adapt to the methods Iraola is looking to implement, the Basque-born boss said: “Always when you arrive to a place it will take some time. “But we would like also to maintain a lot of things that the team was doing. “I think at the end last season, the team finished in a good position, for a team that was recently promoted. But we’ve come with our own ideas, we have some games during pre-season to try to implement these ideas, to try to improve and that’s what we are doing right now. “We still don’t have the international players, they will arrive at the end of the week. “I want to start working with all the group so we can start the tactical side. “The first week has been more about the physical side, because we don’t have a lot of players. “Next week we will start thinking more about our tactical idea.” Cherries head for a 10-day training camp in Marbella on Friday.
Andoni Iraola

#PLStories- Andoni Iraola outlines style he wants to bring to AFC Bournemouth #AFCB

The Spaniard, who credits Marcelo Bielsa as an influence for the way he coaches, has become well-known for his teams playing high-pressing football, particularly during his recent successful stint with Rayo Vallecano in Spain. Asked what he is looking to implement as new boss of Cherries, Iraola told afcbTV: “We want to be an efficient team. “For me, a lot of times to be efficient is to play as close to their box as we can. Probably we will play a little bit higher up the pitch. “We want to be direct, to try to maximise our offensive volume. Obviously we have to defend, we have to be ready to defend sometimes in a low block, because we will be forced. “But our main idea will be to play as much as we can in their half. “I hope you are happy. I think we have the work-rate, especially from our front players, that they can sustain the press. “They can make us play as high as we can, so we are closer when we regain possession to their goal. But we have a lot of work to do. We have to implement everything and the players also have to buy the idea. “I think from the first impressions I have, talking to some players, they are used to working. “They are used to training hard and we will need it. “Sometimes the coach has to be demanding, but it is our job. I think the players are ready for it.” He added: “I want to start training, I want to start knowing the players. Because it is one thing to watch the players on video, then you don’t really know the player. “You have to look at the small details, how they train, how they understand the game, tactically how good they are. “We don’t have so much time, but I think it is enough to get prepared for the first game against West Ham.”
Asmir Begovic

#PLStories- Asmir Begovic on Mark Travers losing place to Neto #AFCB

Travers enjoyed a stellar campaign in 2021-22, scooping a host of individual awards for his efforts in helping Cherries clinch promotion to the Championship. He then started last season as Cherries’ first choice, before Gary O’Neil took the reins and instantly took him out of the side, bringing in experienced new signing Neto in his place. The Brazilian would go on to become club captain, restricting Travers to just 15 club appearances in all competitions last season. Speaking to the Daily Echo following the final-day loss at Everton, where Travers featured for the first time in more than four months, the Irishman admitted it had been a "very tough" season personally adding: “I know I want to play every week and at my age, I don’t want to be not playing.” Prior to his spell as first choice in 2021-22, Travers played second fiddle to Begovic, before the Bosnian departed to join Everton. Discussing Travers losing his place last season, Begovic told BBC Radio Solent: “First and foremost, Neto has been fantastic. “Obviously a top-level goalkeeper, who has played at the highest level for many, many years. “Of course for Trav it’s an experience, it’s part of development. “There’s going to be ups and downs in football, there’s no doubt about it. It’s never smooth sailing, that’s for sure. “He’s maybe dealing with a bit of a different experience now after having the games over the year previous to that. “I’m sure he’ll take stock in the summer and see what he wants to do and I’m sure the club will as well. “They’ve got a fantastic goalkeeper coach in Neil Moss and his staff. So they’ll all put a plan together for his development and make sure he keeps going in the right direction. “But it’s part of a goalkeeper’s life and a professional footballer’s life. There’s ups and downs and you have to take them all in your stride, deal with them in the best way possible.” Travers was dropped by O’Neil following the 9-0 humiliation against Liverpool in the fourth league game of the season. Reflecting on that decision to leave Travers out for the next game against Wolves, before he was sacked and replaced by Andoni Iraola last week, O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “Conceding nine as a goalkeeper, he was not at fault for too many. But then to be taken out after that and it’s not the season he would have wanted, I’m sure. “But he’s trained with real professionalism. I’ve had a real comfort in the fact I know Trav can come in if he’s needed, because of the way he works and the way he is around the group. “A difficult day for me as well that day (at Anfield). “As an interim head coach to have a day and a half to prepare for Wolves and have to make a call on last year’s player of the season and the number one goalie, to take him out wasn’t an easy conversation for me to have with Trav, who I obviously have a fantastic relationship with. “I’m extremely grateful to Trav. “Whether he feels like he had a big impact on the season or not, because he hasn’t played much, but his impact around the group and the way he’s held himself and behaved since that disappointment definitely helped the group manage to get over the line.”
Justin Kluivert

#PLStories- Justin Kluivert on Premier League ambitions at AFC Bournemouth #AFCB

Kluivert joined Cherries on Friday for a reported initial £9.5million, arriving from Roma. The Dutchman has penned a long-term contract with the club, which is believed to run until 2028. Asked what he hopes to achieve with Cherries in that time, Kluivert told afcbTV: “My hopes and ambitions are just to be very important for the club. “I want to be that type of player. And just to do my best and give my all. “I know what my abilities are and I want to show that for the club and for the fans. I can’t wait. “To be honest, everybody knows it’s the best league in the world. “This is the dream, to play in the Premier League. That’s why I’m really excited to get started. “I’m looking forward to it.” Kluivert, 24, already has plenty of varied experience, playing in the top league of five European countries with spells at Ajax, Leipzig, Nice and Valencia, as well as Roma. “I’ve just turned 24 and I’ve learned a lot from my career already,” he said. “It is actually just the beginning and I’ve already been through a lot. “So I’m very happy that I’ve been through all of that and it will help me in my future, I know for sure. “I speak to people who say it looks like you’ve been 24 for 10 years! I say yes, I have been in the game since I was very young and I’m still quite young. “I can’t wait to get started and show my qualities here in this league for years to come.” Netherlands international Kluivert is the son of former Barcelona and Newcastle United striker Patrick Kluivert, one of his country’s all-time leading goalscorers. Significantly shorter than his father, Justin has played most of his football out on the wings, using his pace and tricky to score and create goals. Quizzed on what type of player Cherries fans will see, Kluivert said: “They can expect a player who is willing to do everything for the team, to attack. “I guess I could say I run quite fast! My mind is to score goals and be important for the team, also in the defensive area.” He added: “I am very delighted (to sign). “I’m part of the family right now and I can’t wait to get to know the teammates and the new coach also. I can’t wait to get started.”
Lewis Cook AFC Bournemouth

#PLStories- Lewis Cook assesses his Premier League season with AFC Bournemouth #AFCB

Cook is one of Cherries’ longest-serving players, having joined the club from Leeds United in the summer of 2016. Two serious knee injuries have restricted the availability of the one-time England international during his time in Dorset. In his seven years at Cherries, Cook has racked up 180 appearances, scoring two goals and last summer signed a contract extension which runs until 2025. The 26-year-old played a key role in the first half of last season, starting 16 Premier League games in succession, before injury saw him forced off during defeat at Brentford in January. Cook would be unavailable for the next five league games, with Joe Rothwell excelling in his place. When fit again, Cook would still find game-time hard to come by, with Rothwell, Philip Billing and Jefferson Lerma featuring more regularly in midfield. The York-born talent ended the campaign having made 31 appearances in league and cup. Asked for his reflections on the season, Cook told the Daily Echo: “I had a spell out, but it’s not as long as I’ve had in the past. “Playing 30-something games, in the best league in the world, I can’t complain at all. “I’ve really enjoyed it and am just looking forward to next year.” Discussing his lack of game-time from March onwards, Cook added: “The lads have been playing unbelievable. “We can’t complain with having this many points four games before the end of the season. “It’s part of football. Whoever has got the shirt is going to try and keep it. “It’s my job to try and keep training, keep working hard and keep enjoying my football to try and get back in. “But it’s part of football and we’re definitely all in this together. “I think the lads played a big part in the season, whether it be the start, the middle, or the end. We’re a big team and we’re together, definitely.” Cook will be hoping for another new lease of life under new boss Andoni Iraola, when he joins the rest of his teammates for pre-season testing on Saturday, July 1. Cherries will then train in England, before heading off to Marbella for a warm weather training camp. During that spell, they will face friendlies against Scottish outfit Hibernian (July 13) and Israeli giants Maccabi Tel Aviv (July 16). Cherries will then return home, welcoming Atalanta (July 29) and FC Lorient (August 5) to Vitality Stadium before the Premier League campaign gets underway at home against West Ham United seven days later.
Bill Foley and Cannae Holdings

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth chairman Bill Foley on expectations for club #AFCB

Foley is slowly earning a reputation for his bold predictions coming true. Shortly after completing Black Knight’s takeover of Cherries, he “guaranteed” Cherries would avoid relegation, a claim that came true far sooner than his more audacious statement that his Vegas Golden Knights side would win ice hockey’s biggest prize in their first six years of existence. He was almost proven right one year in, when the Golden Knights reached the final, but Vegas did keep to his six-year schedule, defeating the Florida Panthers to lift the Stanley Cup last week. Foley shared: “I did do the prediction that we were not going to be relegated, that kind of made the rounds. “I got sick and tired of ‘well, you're going to be relegated. How do you possibly stay up? You're picked number 20,’ and I finally said, ‘we're not going to be relegated back in late December, I guarantee it.’ “And of course, that came back to haunt me for a while, but worked out we didn't get relegated.” At the time of his survival prediction, Foley also stressed how he wanted European football at the Vitality – but the Cherries chairman would not put an exact timeline on reaching continental competition. “We have perhaps more modest expectations. “Football is the greatest sport in the world, and the Premier League is the best football league in the world, and the competition is unbelievable. “So we ended up 15th. “We'll be doing some serious adds to our squad this summer and we have modest goals. “Let's see if we can't work our way to 13th, 12th, then maybe the next year 11th, 10th, then ninth, eighth and then maybe somehow we sneak in like a Brighton, and we do play European football. “It's a few years off so it's not going to happen just yet and we'll see how this team that we're putting together this summer supplements what we already have.” Foley then went on to explain how Cherries have already lined up potential targets. The Daily Echo understands personal terms have been agreed with last season’s loanee Matias Vina, whilst the club remain in negotiations with Roma over a fee for the left-back and winger Justin Kluivert. “We're talking to agents and talking to players and you can't make commitments just yet,” Foley continued. “It's supposed to be July 1, but we have a lot of people lined up that we're very interested in. “So my prospects for Bournemouth are very good and our prospects for our multi-club strategy is on track. “We have now one Ligue 1 club and we're working in Belgium. “We have some ideas about Spain and we don't need a bunch, need about three that we can send players to, they get their experience, they're playing all the time then they come back up to Bournemouth. “So we have a plan but it's going to be evolving.”
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Mark Travers wants more game-time after losing AFC Bournemouth spot #AFCB

Goalkeeper Travers enjoyed a memorable 2021-22 campaign, winning a host of individual awards, including the Daily Echo/Micky Cave player of the year, after playing a key role in the club clinching promotion from the Championship. That form saw him rewarded with a new five-year contract last summer, and he began 2022-23 as the club’s first-choice stopper. However, after keeping a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa on the opening day, Travers was powerless to prevent Cherries shipping 16 goals across the next three fixtures, including the 9-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield. Scott Parker then left the club, with one of the first acts of Gary O’Neil as interim boss being to drop Travers to the bench and install the experienced Neto between the sticks. The Brazilian started eight games on the spin, before Travers got another chance due to an injury to Neto. However, when he returned to fitness, Neto took the gloves again, before going on to be named as the new club captain, with Travers not featuring between January and the final game of the season at Everton. Republic of Ireland international Travers impressed at Goodison Park, stepping in at late notice after Neto returned to Brazil following a family bereavement. Reflecting on his season on a personal level, having made 15 appearances, the 24-year-old told the Daily Echo: “It’s very tough. You want to be playing every week. “Getting that buzz again (at Everton) was great and you want to replicate that every week. “But it’s been a massive learning curve, I suppose. A difficult time, the first time sitting on the bench. “I’ve been third choice, played last year and then second choice this year. “It’s been tough coming in and out, but hopefully I can build on it and go again next year.” Asked if there is a decision to be made over the summer regarding his future, and whether he may need to go elsewhere for more game-time, Travers said: “I don’t know, it’s obviously up to the club. “But I know I want to play every week and at my age, I don’t want to be not playing. “It’s up to them. We’ll see what happens in pre-season and whatever happens, happens. “But I’ll come back to Bournemouth fighting, giving 100 per cent and then whatever the decision is, it is.” Asked last month if there was an argument Travers could do with a loan move next season, boss Gary O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “We haven’t gone into that yet. There’s a lot of thinking and decisions that will need to be made around a lot of players. “No decisions made yet on ins and outs and loans and who needs what. “As soon as the season is done, we can start to put some real clear focus into the detail of what’s best for everybody and, firstly, the football club.”
Andrew Surman

#PLStories- Andrew Surman on replacing Jefferson Lerma at Bournemouth #AFCB

Surman, 36, left Cherries in the summer of 2020 following relegation from the Premier League, having made 226 appearances for the club across two spells, scoring 11 goals. He retired from professional football in 2021 and in January of this year returned to Cherries, taking up a role as under-18s assistant manager. Central midfielder Surman made 13 appearances alongside Lerma during the pair’s crossover at Cherries, under Eddie Howe. The Colombian, who is the club’s record £25million signing, is set to leave on a free transfer this summer as his five-year contract expires. 'Wherever I go, I will carry them in my heart' - Lerma's farewell to Cherries Asked if Cherries need to find a direct replacement for the 28-year-old, or if the likes of Joe Rothwell and Lewis Cook can plug the gap, Surman told BBC Radio Solent: “Obviously he got me out the team, so I can’t say too much! No, I’m only joking. “I think they need to replace him, 100 per cent. “I think Rothwell is a really, really good player and Lewis Cook is proven over the years. “But I don’t think you can underestimate the physicality of the Premier League. Losing a player like Jefferson Lerma, you have to replace the physicality side of that. “You look at someone like (Romeo) Lavia at Southampton, physicality, gets you up the pitch, puts tackles in, he’s all-action. “I think that’s what they’re going to need, especially strength in depth wise, because you’re relying on those two midfielders. “If one of those gets injured, then you’re looking at it going ‘who is going to step up and play in there?’ “I think they need to replace him with a physical asset. It’s a shame that he’s leaving, because I think he’s a really good player, Jeff.” Lerma leaves having made 184 appearances for Cherries, with Crystal Palace his reported next destination.

After all-but securing mathematical safety with a 4-1 victory over Leeds United at the end of April, Cherries head coach Gary O’Neil took the opportunity to use the remaining four games of the season to try new ideas and playing styles. Cherries’ place in next season’s Premier League was confirmed despite defeat at Crystal Palace two weeks later, meaning they went into the final two clashes with Manchester United and Everton with little pressure. Whilst Cherries were unable to add to their tally of 39 points, it proved more than enough, with Leicester City in the final relegation spot going down with a total of 34. Asked if Cherries had been trying new things in their final games, Christie told the Daily Echo: “Absolutely. I mean, we're in a nice position where we can try these things this season, going into the next season. “These last three games we've been kind of tweaking stuff, experimenting a little bit. For the most part, I think it's worked. “I know that the results these last three, four games have been frustrating, but the games - Chelsea game, thought we played well for the most part. “Man United, we were in the game the whole game and even (against Everton). “Obviously, Palace was a bit of a frustrating one for us. “Plenty to work on, but quite positive.” Arriving on deadline in August 2021, Christie helped Cherries earn promotion last season before making 32 top-flight appearances as the Dorset outfit secured another season of Premier League football. “Another season in the Prem, that's the exciting thing,” continued the 28-year-old. “Getting to do this all over again and hopefully have an even more successful season. “If we’d got a better result (against Everton), we could have jumped another couple of places. “So hope for next season to constantly keep pushing. “All the staff are on that wavelength, all the boys are on that wavelength and come back and ready to do all again.” Discussing the final day defeat at Goodison, Christie surmised: “ I think we wanted to come and given a good account of ourselves, obviously the game would have been on TV and stuff and obviously we wanted to finish the season as well with a positive result. “Frustrating we didn't do that. “But I think for the majority of the game we played well. “Definitely took the game to them, obviously frustrating that we didn't get a result. I think we would have deserved it.”
Jordan Zemura

#PLStories- Jordan Zemura thanks AFC Bournemouth ahead of Udinese move #AFCB

In April, Serie A side Udinese announced they had completed a deal to sign the left-back on a free transfer, once his contract at Cherries expired this summer. The parting of the ways was not particularly amicable, with the higher-ups at Cherries left in the dark about Zemura’s movements. That consequently saw the 23-year-old go from regular starter to out of the squad entirely, his last appearance coming in the 3-2 defeat at Arsenal in early March. The Zimbabwe international has taken to social media to share his thoughts, alongside a video reel of highlights from his time at the club. On Instagram, Zemura posted: “Season officially over, first of wanted to say thank you to my family and friends for their support throughout it all, in a season that I will never forget playing in the biggest league in the world! “Something that I will forever cherish and hold tight to me. Secondly, after all that has been said throughout the course of the last three months I wanted to make it known I am forever grateful to AFC Bournemouth for allowing me to showcase myself and trusting me! “Thank you to the staff all across the club they showed me love and care. To the fans thank you for singing my name to the roof tops, and for the love from day one. “Something so special and will never be forgotten, no matter what was said I came as 19-year-old boy and I’ve grown with every step, for that I am forever thankful! “Wish nothing but the best for the club and my teammates who have helped me since I first stepped into the dressing room. “Once a cherry always a cherry. “Excited for the future to continue developing and working harder and achieving everything I set out to achieve in this game, with God’s grace and protection I will! #33” Zemura, who joined the club from Charlton Athletic in 2019, leaves having scored three goals in 63 appearances for Cherries.
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil slams Premier League referees after season-ending loss against Everton #AFCB

Cherries went through the entire campaign without being awarded a penalty, finishing 15th in the table following the 1-0 loss at Goodison Park. O’Neil claims Cherries could have been awarded a spot-kick for a challenge by Yerry Mina on Dominic Solanke on Sunday, and has previously said how the Premier League’s refereeing chief Howard Webb has regularly apologised to him personally for errors made by officials. O’Neil received a yellow card from referee Stuart Attwell during Sunday’s at Everton, during a frantic spell in the contest which also saw Solanke, Jordan Pickford and Adam Smith cautioned. Asked why he had received his booking, O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “The fact we’ve got 39 points this season with the level of officiating against us is a miracle. “The fact that it’s taken me that long to get booked is also a miracle. I thought the refereeing was terrible. “We’re the first team ever since VAR has been introduced not to receive a penalty. I just thought any time there was a decision that could go either way, it went to them, which is what I feel we’ve suffered this season. “I’ve spoken to Howard Webb a lot on Sundays. Generally it’s ‘yes, we should’ve got that one right, apologies’, but it can’t be us that always suffers on the day and then retrospectively are told we should’ve had something. “Hopefully next season it improves for us. I think it’s been really, really poor for us.” He added: “Apart from some of the stuff we’ve done and that I’m responsible for and look to improve, I think one of my biggest disappointments this year is the level of officiating that we’ve suffered. “I just think over the course of the season, the ones that can go against us have. So I’m disappointed.”
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil believes Bournemouth were the ‘better side’ at Everton despite losing #AFCB

Abdoulaye Doucoure’s fierce half-volley proved the difference early in the second half as the Toffees ran out 1-0 victors at Goodison Park. The game was played in a ferocious atmosphere, with the home crowd whipping up a frenzy to push their side over the line to secure the victory they needed to secure their Premier League status. Asked for his assessment of Cherries’ performance, boss O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “I thought we were the better side. I thought we had control for the most part. “There’s still lots there that we need to progress on, but we knew what we were coming in to. “A tough atmosphere, a direct team and we’ve struggled with playing against direct teams this season. I thought the lads stood up to it very, very well. “We maybe didn’t create enough from the situations that we had, although we created a couple of really good ones. “I’m excited that we’ve got to a point where we can come here and perform like that, under tough conditions, tough pressure. “Have loads of the ball, controlled with it. We maybe got a little bit too desperate towards the end, we started chucking things forward slightly early and suffered a couple of counter-attacks. “There was a lot there that I like, a team that I feel represented what I stand for - stood up to the physical battle, showed bravery and calmness with the ball. “I was disappointed that we couldn’t score a goal. I always thought we’d get one. I thought we looked dangerous enough to score.” Despite their 62 per cent possession, Cherries recorded just two shots on target, coming closest to scoring when substitute Matias Vina saw his shot parried away by Jordan Pickford in second-half stoppage time. Discussing the atmosphere at Goodison Park, O’Neil said: “It was enjoyable. I thought the lads handled it very well. “I thought we stood up to Everton’s direct play, showed real good control and calmness and quality with the ball. “It was what I expected it to be and I thought the lads coped with it very well.” Cherries finish the season in 15th place in the Premier League, with 39 points from their 38 matches. They netted 37 goals and conceded 71, with only Leeds United (78) and Southampton (73) seeing more goals go in against them. O’Neil’s men suffered defeat in each of their final four fixtures of the season.
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil on player of the year Jefferson Lerma #AFCB

Now approaching the end of his fifth season at the club, Lerma was last week crowned winner of the annual vote by supporters, pipping teammates Neto and Philip Billing to the prestigious award. It is the first time the midfielder has won the gong, after another impressive season on the pitch, which has seen him feature more than any other player in the squad. Lerma, the club’s record signing at £25million, has had his most prolific season in front of goal, scoring five times in 36 appearances. Those strikes helped earn points against Aston Villa, Fulham and Leeds United along the way to Cherries securing their Premier League safety. The 28-year-old has played under five different managers at Cherries in Eddie Howe, Jason Tindall, Jonathan Woodgate, Scott Parker and now O’Neil, all of them regularly selecting the Colombia international. Asked what it is that makes Lerma such a permanent fixture in the team, O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “I think his drive, his tenacity, his commitment to the cause. They are the obvious ones. “But he has quality as well obviously, you’ve seen he’s scored some important goals for us. Some real quality in them as well, the finish away at Fulham was a fantastic finish. “He’s just a guy that you know you can rely on. Especially if you’re going to be in and around the scrap, he’s someone that you want on your team. “You know what you’re going to get from him. He brings some quality, athletically still very good and has had another successful season. “Over the last five years, he’s been one of the first names on the team sheet fairly consistently.” While still not quite mastering the language, Spanish speaking Lerma has settled into life on the south coast and has made 183 appearances for the club. That included two seasons in the Championship, and could see him reach the milestone of 100 Premier League appearances at Everton this weekend. Asked what Lerma is like off the pitch, O’Neil explained: “He trains at 100 per cent, every day. “No matter what we’re doing, if you say ‘light session today, lads’, Jeff generally doesn’t take too much notice of that! “He’s still flying into people, sliding tackles. He trains with a purpose, always, which is great for the young lads to see. “It’s great as a coach as well, when you have those days where things are maybe feeling a bit flat if we’ve been on a tough run, Jeff brings a real life and determination and always grabs the day by the scruff of the neck. “He’s been key in what we’ve achieved again this year. I’m not surprised that he’s managed to pick up the player of the year.”
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Gary O’Neil on training plans ahead of final game #AFCB

Cherries enter their final game of the season with Everton with significantly less pressure than their hosts on Sunday (kick-off 4.30pm). The Toffees are in their second successive relegation battle, whilst Cherries have already staved off the threat of the drop with games to spare Sean Dyche’s charges currently occupy the final safe spot of 17th, but a win for Leicester in tonight’s fixture with Newcastle would see them drop into the final three and take their destiny out of their own hands. Being reliant on results elsewhere on the final day is a scenario Cherries are well familiar with. Under Eddie Howe, Cherries’ last visit to Goodison Park ended in relegation to the Championship despite a 3-1 win, as Aston Villa’s draw with West Ham poured cold water on the result. Asked what his plans for the week ahead was, O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “Give the boys a little bit (to) recover from (the weekend), obviously a slightly longer week, an extra day. “So, get the boys recovered and then ask them again to be ready to suffer and sacrifice like they did (against Manchester United). “I think that the three games we’ve played since we have been safe, Chelsea and the Man United ones are what performances need to look like. “And I'm sure the boys enjoyed (the Manchester United game) a lot more than they did last week. “Important that we get them ready to go again and make sure that we're very competitive at Everton, and try and put one more win on the table for the season.” After reaching the 39 point mark with victory against Leeds at the end of April, Cherries effectively secured safety with four games to spare. “I think everyone felt that the Everton game would probably be pivotal for both of us,” continued O’Neil. “Definitely us, maybe not Everton, so the fact that it isn't to us shows what a good achievement it was from the players. “One thing to stay up, another thing to stay up with four games to spare. “So very impressive, from a group without quite a lot of people and you saw again, they’ll run, they’ll work that they do whatever’s asked of them. (An) incredible group. “It's obviously nice that we get to come in, enjoy training, start to switch focus a little bit, discussions around next season and sort of things taking place with the recruitment team, now we know what league we're going to be in. “So, being successful as early as we did and getting the job done means that we can start to plan.”
Illia Zabaryni

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Illia Zabaryni speaks after Manchester United loss #AFCB

Ukrainian international Zabarnyi has started both of Cherries’ last two fixtures, back-to-back defeats against Crystal Palace and the Red Devils. Casemiro’s ninth minute scissor kick proved the difference between the two side, with Zabarnyi putting in an assured and astute performance at the back. A January signing from Dynamo Kyiv, injury prevented the centre-back from making his Premier League debut until April, with Zabaryni coming off the bench in the defeat to Brighton. In total, he has made four appearances in red and black, also playing 22 minutes of Cherries’ win at Southampton. Asked what he had made of his first starts for Cherries, Zabarnyi told the Daily Echo: “We played against two good teams, both Crystal Palace, very nice players, and Manchester United with very big quality players and of course, it's very good experience for me. I'm feeling good. “(Manchester United) they attack a lot and they have good players, quality and fast players, very good dribbling and of course for a defender it's best practice. “When you defend against best players in the league, you improve. “It's a little unlucky. It's a good performance. “We were good, strong play. “Now, it's very hard because we play against a good team and big quality players and I think we do it well, but a little unlucky.” Capped 24 times by Ukraine, Zabarnyi described the quality of the Premier League as “another level” to international football. He continued: “It's another level, I think, because of course, it's so fast. “Everyone can score at every moment. “And if you attack, one second (later), you are defending. “It's really important because you need to be ready every time. It's really hard.” With Cherries safe heading into the final game of the season, Zabarnyi believes the zero-pressure environment will allow him to improve ahead of pre-season and what he believes will be an even tougher campaign next season. “Now it's important to start to play, start to improve, because next season it's harder, I think, and we need to give the best version of us,” he finished. Cherries travel to relegation threatened Everton in their final game of the season on Sunday (kick-off 4.30pm). Zabarnyi is expected to be called up for international duty with Ukraine this summer, for European Championship qualifiers against Malta and Macedonia, as well as a friendly with Germany.
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Gary O’Neil on David Brooks return after injury #AFCB

Welsh international Brooks made his first senior start in 599 days as Cherries fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester United. Brooks had missed the majority of the past two seasons after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in September 2021. An injury setback in the form a hamstring issue delayed his return, with the winger playing with Alan Connell’s development squad in the Hampshire Senior Cup. After four substitute appearances, Brooks played 56 minutes of Saturday’s contest before being replaced by fellow countryman Kieffer Moore. O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “I thought David did well. “Obviously he’s been out for a very long time. “First start, he showed a good energy, showed a good understanding of what we're trying to do as well. “It's obviously quite new for him but yes, still a part of the journey to go for Brooksy. “I think the summer will be very important for him. “Pre-season, report back in July or end of June, whenever it is, and it's a level playing field then. “I think the situation us being in a relegation battle, Brooksy being out for so long, very difficult from my point of view to give him enough time to see whether he's ready. “Whereas he can come back in pre-season, level playing field. “Hopefully Brooksy can impact the group and be ready to impact football matches every week.” Asked if the switch was pre-planned, O’Neil replied: “He can't play for too long at this moment, so we need to be careful with him. “He's worked so hard, he's earned his chance to start today, with how well he's done in training, but to have left him out there for much longer than the hour that he did would have been a risk. “We're not in a situation, thankfully, where we need to be taking too many risks.
Erik ten haag

#PLStories- Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag on beating AFC Bournemouth #MUFC

Cherries struggled to deal with their guests for most of the first period, with ten Hag’s side hemming the hosts inside their own half for the opening half hour. The Red Devils managed to convert their dominance into an early goal, Casemiro’s acrobatic finish in the ninth minute eventually proving to be the difference. Despite their control of possession, United struggled to create clear-cut chances, whilst Cherries themselves failed to truly trouble David De Gea in the Red Devils’ goal, with substitute Kieffer Moore’s gilt-edged opportunity late on their most dangerous of the afternoon. After the game, the Manchester United boss shared: "We go from game to game and (after Bournemouth) we are happy I think. “A great performance, a good team performance. “The first 25 minutes was really good, it was a brilliant performance from our team. Building up, staying compact, the counter press. “A lot of things were magnificent. I hope we can stay longer at such levels and that is what we have to work for.” Whilst Cherries defender Marcos Senesi almost intercepted Christian Eriksen’s assist for Casemiro’s opener, the goal itself included a moment of individual brilliance as the Brazilian swiveled and fired past his compatriot Neto with a scissor kick. “It was great,” ten Hag restarted when discussing the goal. “I think the whole midfield played brilliantly. We're coaching a lot of movement behind and now it's coming out of the third line. “It's a great run from Casemiro and great touch from Christian Eriksen. And the finish is brilliant, of course it was." Manchester United require one point from their final two games to secure a top-four finish, and with it, a place in next season’s Champions League. They host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Thursday evening, before also welcoming Fulham to the Theatre of Dreams on the final day, next Sunday.
Emi Marcondes

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Emi Marcondes speaks on future with Cherries #AFCB

The Dane’s season has been prematurely ended by a foot injury, with the attacking midfielder stating that Cherries had proved helpful in his recovery despite currently being out on loan. Despite making just three appearances for Cherries in 2023/24, Marcondes insists he is not being forced out of Dean Court. Translated from his native Danish, the midfielder told bold.dk: “They are very happy to have me there, and they don't want to get rid of me.  “The new ownership has also expressed this and has entered into something of a multi-club system, and they think that I am a really good ambassador for that.  “It was also why they only wanted to loan me out, because they can see that I have value.  “So we talked about that. “We have talked continuously after various matches.  “They have said that it has looked good as I have scored and been decisive, which was exactly what they wanted. “So I have been in contact with them, and there has been a nice dialogue. “During this period with my injury, they have also shown that they take responsibility for their players on loan, and I like that.” The 28-year-old earnt back-to-back promotions from the Championship with Brentford and Cherries. Released immediately by the Bees despite scoring at Wembley to help them reach the Premier League, Marcondes made his top-flight debut during Cherries’ 9-0 defeat to Liverpool, his only league appearance this term. He continued: “That's why I went to England and Brentford five years ago, because I wanted to play in the Premier League and prove myself in the biggest league in the world. “I want to play against and with the best, and that is still my dream.  “I also dream of other countries, but I like being in Bournemouth.  “My first priority is clearly chasing a breakthrough in the Premier League.  “It's also a good club to be in, so I still want to make it through the club.” Whilst Marcondes’ preference is to stay and Cherries and try to break into the first team, he admits that he may have to look elsewhere. Entering the final year of his deal at the Vitality, the Danish youth international already has other suitors. “If I can't make the team in Bournemouth, I have to look at other options,” he admitted.  “There are also several people who have already contacted me and inquired about my injury, but I don't think too much about that now.  “I am only focused on getting rid of my injury, and then we have to look at the other things going forward."
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil believes Bournemouth deserved at least a draw against Man United #AFCB

Cherries fell to their third straight defeat this afternoon, losing 1-0 to an early Casemiro strike. However, unlike the 2-0 defeat at Selhurst Park a week earlier, in which Cherries failed to register a shot on target, they did threaten to get something out of the game. Substitute Kieffer Moore had the clearest chance, denied one-on-one by David de Gea in the final 10 minutes. Asked for his assessment of his side’s display, boss O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “I was pleased. “I thought it was a good performance against obviously a very good Man United side, who are still pushing hard, desperate for points for the top four and have a cup final still at the end of the season, so they are full throttle at the moment. “We were obviously under-strength, five key players missing, a little bit short today. “So in comparison to Crystal Palace, light years apart. I thought it was a very competitive game. “I didn’t think there was much in it. I thought our chances were probably equally as good as theirs. “They managed to take one, we didn’t. It ends up 1-0, but I don’t think anyone could’ve complained if Kieffer Moore would’ve taken his chance at the end and the game finishes 1-1, I think it would’ve been a fair score-line. “I’m proud of the players again, because it’s not easy once you’ve reached the top of the mountain like we did, to then have to go again and suffer against a good side without the ball sometimes, dig in, defend your goal and then show quality with the ball. “I thought it was a good performance.” Cherries round off their season at Everton next weekend.
Jefferson Lerma

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jefferson Lerma talks about his future with Cherries #AFCB

A fan favourite since arriving from Spanish side Levante in 2018 for a club-record £25million, Lerma has entered the final months of his contract at Vitality Stadium. Capped 33 times by Colombia, the 28-year-old has a host of suitors, both in Spain and in the Premier League. London clubs Crystal Palace, West Ham and Fulham are rumoured to be interested, with clubs in Europe unable to match the financial pull of top-flight clubs in England. Sources close to the player had told the Daily Echo that he was undecided over a move away due to his strong affection for the club and the Cherries faithful. Reports had suggested that the Colombian international had rejected multiple contract offers from Cherries, only for Lerma himself to insist that this was not the case. Speaking exclusively to the Daily Echo in his native Spanish, Lerma shared: “Everything is possible. I have never rejected an offer from the club. “We have always been in dialogue and waited to make the best decision for both of us. “I am very grateful to count on the people here, but now it is time to reach an agreement that works out best for both from any point of view. “For me, if there was a breakdown in talks with the club it would be in the news. “We are waiting and taking the best decision for both of us.” Now mathematically safe from relegation, Cherries had an uncharacteristically bad day at the office last time out, failing to register a shot on target as they were defeated 2-0 at Crystal Palace. “It was quite a rare game from us,” Lerma explained. “I think that we couldn’t really settle. But we have to raise our heads and think of what’s to come. “Sadly, it was an out-of-character game (for us) and a good game for them. “But every week we have an opportunity to lift ourselves up.” The major talking point stemming from the encounter from a Cherries perspective was a first-half incident involving Lerma. Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen struck Lerma in the face with a clenched fist at a corner, there being enough force to break the former Levante man’s nose. However, despite a VAR check, Andersen received no punishment. Asked if he had broken his nose, Lerma replied: “Yes -  you can see it a little. “Supposedly (the referees) didn’t see anything wrong. We have to forget it and we recover.” With two games left in their season, Cherries have already achieved their pre-season objective of survival. Asked for his thoughts on the season as a whole, Lerma responded: “Yes, that also has to be seen as a positive. “I think that everything cannot be rosy. We have to not crash after a loss, but recover – the desire is to return to victory. “Like I said before, it’s football and every week you have an opportunity to prove yourself.”
Neto

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Neto on defeat to Crystal Palace #AFCB

Two finely taken goals from Eberechi Eze proved the difference, with Neto powerless prevent either effort in the eventual 2-0 defeat at Selhurst Park. It was the first time since March Cherries have lost back-to-back games, with the Brazilian admitting his side were second best. He shared: “We’re frustrated by the result. We wanted to win this game, it was very important for us but I think we didn’t deserve it.“By our interpretation, it wasn’t our right to win the game and we have to keep going. That’s football and we have to move on.” Whilst Everton’s subsequent defeat to champions elect Manchester City on Sunday confirmed Cherries’ place in next season's Premier League, Neto believes his team will give it their all in the final fixtures with Manchester United and the Toffees. “I think 40 points is the number for everybody at the beginning of the season and when the games happen, maybe you don’t need the 40 points,” he continued. “Our goal and objective is 40 points and we have two difficult games in the next weeks and we have to mentalise the right way to keep going and go win those games.”
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Gary O’Neil hails safety as a ‘big achievement’ despite loss against Crystal Palace #AFCB

Everton’s defeat to Manchester City on Sunday means there are now three teams in the Premier League unable to overhaul Cherries’ current points tally of 39. Leeds United can now only finish on 37, Everton’s potential maximum 38, whilst New Forest neighbours Southampton have already been relegated. That means Cherries can finish no lower than 17th, thus are safe from the threat of relegation. Promoted from the Championship last term following a two-year absence from the top-flight, many tipped Cherries to go straight back down. Despite an opening day win over Aston Villa, heavy defeats to the biggest hitters in the league culminated in Scott Parker’s final game in charge, a record-equalling 9-0 defeat at Liverpool. Shortly after O’Neil was installed on a temporary basis, the head coach doing enough as interim to earn the job on a full-time basis. Victory over Leeds United at the end of April ultimately proved enough for Cherries to stay up with four games spare. “It's a big achievement, no doubt,” O’Neil mused. “You saw (against Crystal Palace), if we wouldn't have been at full tilt all season and the players hadn't been given absolutely everything, that is how the Premier League can treat you, ruthless. “Crystal Palace made us look like a team that was struggling. So the boys have given everything for the whole season, suffered some real tough blows, managed to pick themselves up and go again. “A lot of hard work gone in, from players and staff and, yeah, that's how we achieved it, really. “That's how we achieved it. We got everything out of absolutely everybody that we could. “Every last drop of quality, energy, determination, managed to get it out of everyone.” However, despite his delight at staying up against the odds, O’Neil shared his “huge disappointment” at his side’s performance at Selhurst Park. Eberechi Eze was on hand to score in either half and give Crystal Palace a 2-0 win over a Cherries side that failed to muster a shot on target. He continued: “But I don’t want it to finish like (the performance against Palace). At this moment, where we are with 39 points and the fact that we're safe doesn't make me feel any better about what I saw. “Just huge disappointment, really. “At the end of the season when I’ve sat down and we’ve stayed up, and I can obviously reflect on it from a clearer point of view, but (against Palace) what I saw from a team that was put out by me, I didn't like.”
Lloyd Kelly

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly on loss to Crystal Palace #AFCB

Kelly and co. went into their contest at Selhurst Park requiring one more point to make their Premier League survival a mathematical certainty. Whilst they did not find the required point, losing 2-0 to Palace, their place in next season’s Premier League was confirmed by Everton’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. Asked how he felt about the suggestion of his side losing motivation following all but securing survival, Kelly told BBC Radio Solent: “Of course they can throw accusations at us. It's football, and you're going to get that. “But I think at the end of the day - although you could say we're safe now - every game we go into from now until the end of the season, the two left that we have, we have to put in a performance.” It was the second time Cherries were defeated 2-0 by the Eagles this season, with Gary O’Neil’s charges failing to impress in either game. Kelly mused: “I think coming away from that game is a difficult one, really. “Of course, we set out to come here and get a point, or even three, just put in a good performance and see where that got us. “So coming away from the game with nothing and conceding two goals, which I think in the overall scheme of things, we could have avoided. It’s difficult. “I think it's a difficult one to explain, really. “Of course, you can talk about the tactics and what we can do with the ball and things like that, but I think at the end of the day, it just comes down to if you're willing to run. “And I think we were second best in that today. “They’ve got quality going forward. Coming into the game, everyone knew of that. “We've seen it throughout the season from them. “Their attacking players can create things out of nothing, and we needed to be at our best to avoid conceding those goals. “And I think that's where we slipped up a little bit.”
Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil to speak to PGMOL after Jefferson Lerma broken nose #AFCB

During the first half of Cherries’ contest against Crystal Palace, with the game goalless, Eagles defender Joachim Andersen’s hand connected with the face of Lerma, the latter defending from a corner. The Colombian went to the floor and the game was stopped, but video assistant referee Andy Madley did not recommend to on-field official Michael Salisbury to review the footage, after checking for a potential red card for violent conduct. Webb, a former top-flight referee in England and in international competition, became chief refereeing officer of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) earlier this season. Asked for his take on the incident in the 2-0 defeat at Selhurst Park, Cherries’ head coach O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “Jefferson Lerma has broken his nose from it. “It looked like a fairly clear punch in the face to me, on the footage. “I spoke to the on-field ref and I understand them not spotting it. I think it’s from a corner, so there’s a lot of bodies and things moving fast. “The ref needs to be trying to look at everything, so it’s difficult for him to spot it. “But the fact that we got the usual check complete from VAR, as one that’s going against us, was a surprise. “It was a significant blow to Jeff’s face with a closed fist by the look of it. So I’m disappointed something wasn’t done.” Asked if he will speak to PGMOL about the decision, as he has done in recent weeks about various decisions, O’Neil said: “It’s an interesting one. I speak to Howard Webb most Sundays at the moment! “I’ll speak to him tomorrow, because I feel like this one is an important one. “Jeff’s obviously not happy about it. I’ll speak to him, as we have done even with the penalty decision last week (in defeat to Chelsea) on Dom (Solanke). “It didn’t go our way. It’s important we discuss it, because it’s a significant blow to the face and Jeff has injured and broken his nose from it.” Meanwhile, Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson played down the incident. Asked if he was concerned Andersen may be in trouble at the time, Hodgson told the Daily Echo: “I don’t know, I haven’t seen it. “The penalty box is 65 to 70 yards away from me. My eyesight is not bad, but it’s not an eagle eyesight. “All I know is I was watching the corner kick and trying to assess our organisation and suddenly the game was stopped and there’s a player on the ground. “I have no idea what happened or how he landed on the ground, but I have to trust the referee, who at the time did not see any reason to give a free-kick. “And that was backed up by VAR, so that’s perfectly good enough for me.”
