AFC Bournemouth showcased a commendable performance at the Vitality Stadium, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, resulting in a goalless draw against Brentford. Despite creating 1.99 expected goals from 13 attempts, the Cherries were left frustrated as they hit the post twice and squandered several clear chances. Marcus Tavernier and Ryan Christie were among those who came close to breaking the deadlock.
Andoni Iraola said: “Yes, definitely. I think has been one of our best performances lately. Even better than some of the games we’ve won, but somehow we haven’t scored, and that’s the reason why we haven’t won the game.” He continued: “I think we had very clear chances. I think we hit the post twice. Ryan Christie’s chance is so clear. Even the last one, I think, between Junior [Kroupi] and Enes [Unal], somehow the ball goes around the line outside. [These are] good situations to score.”
Andoni Iraola further expressed: “[Does] this mean that we are happy? No, we are not, because I think we deserve the three points and the point tastes not good. But apart from this, everything else has been positive for me. I think we played a very high-level game against a very good opposition. I think we’ve limited a lot their threats, their transitions, especially the set plays. We’ve conceded a clear chance from a set play, I think, but that’s it. Overall, I think we’ve defended well. We’ve had clear chances, but we haven’t scored and it’s the only reason I can find why we haven’t won this game.”
The draw extended Bournemouth’s unbeaten run to nine games in the Premier League, yet it also marked their 13th draw of the season, the highest in the league. The Cherries have reached the crucial 40-point mark, positioning themselves in the battle for a top-ten finish and potential European qualification. Despite the disappointment of not securing all three points, Iraola took solace in his team’s overall performance, particularly their defensive solidity against a formidable Brentford side. The manager highlighted the need to convert clear chances into goals as they continue their pursuit of a strong league finish.
