#PLStories- Brighton’s Billy Gilmour reveals why he will keep going for shooting a goal #BHAFC

The Albion midfielder saw his rasping shot against Newcastle end up in a finish for hat-trick man Evan Ferguson after it was fumbled by Nick Pope.

He is currently with the Scotland squad as they prepare to face England in a friendly on Tuesday.

Gilmour has impressed for the Seagulls early in the season but would love to add a goal or two to his game.

Speaking on media duty with the national squad, Gilmour said: “It’s coming!

“Two weeks ago against West Ham I came off the pitch and my dad said, ‘How many times? Do you want to just take a chance and shoot!’

“So, going into the game against Newcastle, the first time the ball was bouncing I checked back and thought ‘I just need to shoot here’. It ended up in as an assist.

“Hopefully it will come soon. The most important bit is just trying to get a result and trying to help the team, for sure.

“It used to be my trademark when I was growing up, edge of the box, hitting it first time, and it would go in.

“But then I’ve been first team and I’ve just never scored a goal. Hopefully I can change that.”

While Gilmour’s dad had reservations, Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi has been pleased with the player’s efforts.

He maintained his recent good form by helping Scotland to a comfortable 3-0 win in Cyprus on Friday as they edge close to qualification for Euro 2024.

#PLStories- James Milner hails Evan Ferguson and Brighton progress #BHAFC

But it is the Irish teen’s willingness to work in that respect which has impressed his senior team-mate as well as the goals.

Ferguson fired in a hat-trick against Toon to secure a 3-1 win.

There was as much focus on the defending he faced as there was on his finishing.

Newcastle didn’t get close for the first two goals.

They got a bit nearer for the third and it resulted in a deflection to wrongfoot Nick Pope.

But Milner saw something else in that regard which impressed him as he watched from the substitutes’ bench.

The former Liverpool man said: “It was pleasing to put in a performance like that, although there are still things to work on.

“Evan set the tempo early on. He closed down and blocked a ball going forward.

“That might seem a minor thing looking at the game overall, but it sets a tempo.

“It shows his intent without the ball. And anyone who knows him so far in his young career, he is an unbelievable finisher.

“He is a goalscorer. And when he is doing the ugly side of the game too and being the first line of defence, he was outstanding.

“He is still so young but what a player for us and the ceiling is very high for him.”

Ferguson snapped up a rebound for his first, then curled home from outside the box before seeing this third ricochet in of Fabian Schar.

Milner said: “The first one – that was the sign of a goalscorer.

“That natural movement in the box, sniffing it out the chances in the box, being on the move expecting a slip.

“He scores all types of goals and it’s up to us to keep his feet on the ground and keep driving him and keep pushing him.

“The manager is on him hard as well, because he knows how good he can be and wants him to improve.

“He is a great lad with a great attitude and he can only get better.

“For the second one, they almost offered him a chance to put it in the corner – and he did!

“The more he scores like that, he might get closed down a bit quicker.

“But it was a great and clam finish, and another finish of a goalscorer.”

Around the interview area on Saturday evening, anyone from the Albion side who put himself forward for questions was being asked the same thing.

Who does Ferguson remind you of? Who would you compare him to?

Roberto De Zerbi saw some likenesses to Christin Vieri.

Pascal Gross was not willing to offer a comparison.

Milner has been around far too long to be tempted into mentioning any names as he spoke about an 18-year-old still some way short of the first anniversary of his first Prem goal.

He said: “I don’t really want to compare him to anyone because as soon as I do that it puts pressure on him.

“I want to make sure his head doesn’t get too big!

“But he’s a top talent and has started his career fantastically well.

“Hopefully he has a long one ahead doing the same thing.

“When you compare him to other players, that puts more pressure on him than we need to at this moment.

“He is at a fantastic place right now with great players around him, a great bunch of lads that will push and support him, and a manager that wants him to prove all aspects of his game.”

Amid the exciting group of young players, De Zerbi has also assembled a lot of experience.

And experience of good things. Success. Doing things the right way.

Milner said: “When I was a young player (at Leeds United) it was the likes of David Batty and Dom Matteo that kept my feet on the ground.

“Very old school, probably more than now although I still have a bit of that old school in me. “There are no tea cups being thrown around now.

“But now it is our job to push Evan and advise him.

“He will have ups and downs.”

Ferguson has already had his hiccups. A costly missed penalty for Republic of Ireland under-21s, a couple of injuries.

Those injuries were, thankfully, not as bad as they first looked although the second, sustained at Chelsea, denied him a Wembley outing in the FA Cup semi-final.

He appears to have taken those setbacks in a mature way and come back strongly.

The glimpses we see on social media of him trading mickey-takes with Lewis Dunk suggest someone who is confident and comfortable in his surroundings.

Milner likes what he sees from the set-up in general.

He said: “I am learning a great deal from the manager.

“It’s great to be here, a great bunch of lads and the manager has such a passion for the game.

“He pushes you every day and wants maximum effort and concentration and attention to detail.

“That is massive and I am really enjoying it. I was excited to come here and you never stop learning, off players, the manager and coaching staff.

“It is a lot different from what I did for a long time under Jurgen Klopp and I am enjoying it immensely.

“It is exactly what I hoped for in this later stage of my career, to keep learning and improving and seeing different ways of playing.”

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony on assist for David Brooks against Swansea in League cup #AFCB

Anthony provided a fantastic assist for Brooks to equalise after Cherries trailed 1-0 in Wales thanks to Matt Grimes’ first-half penalty.

The away side then took a lead through Hamed Traore, before the hosts again levelled scores via Jamie Patterson.

In the end it was substitute Ryan Christie who had the last say, finding the bottom corner in the 90th minute to send Cherries through to the next round.

Discussing his assist for Cherries’ first, Anthony insisted that Brooks deserved the credit for applying the finishing touch.

He told the Daily Echo: “It was a good ball and to be fair it’s not an easy finish either, on his weak foot.

“I think he’s had a really good pre-season and a start to the season in front of goal.

“I’m happy he could put it away and help us to win.”

Brooks’ goal came about after Cherries won the ball high up the pitch, with Anthony believing the strike to be representative of the way Andoni Iraola wants Cherries to play.

“I think the manager wants us to be aggressive in every game,” explained the 23-year-old.

“It’s a perfect example of the high press and what that can do.

“Win it back and then attacking pass, and we get the goal – happy days.

“The most important thing was getting through to the next round.

“The first half, we knew we weren’t at the races and we knew we had to react in the second half.

“I think obviously the second goal is probably a bit unfortunate, but I think we deserved what we got in the end.”

The draw for the third round will be made on Wednesday evening, following the conclusion of second round ties.

Teams will not be regionalised, meaning Cherries could be handed another lengthy trek.

Sides competing in Europe enter at this stage of the competition, with third round ties being staged the week commencing Monday, September 25.

#PLStories- Tyler Adams explains why he chose to join AFC Bournemouth after leaving Leeds United #AFCB

Adams over the weekend completed his switch to the south coast from Leeds United, for a reported £23million.

The midfielder made 26 appearances for Leeds last season, but could not prevent them from suffering relegation into the Championship.

However, he has quickly found himself back in the top tier, with Cherries.

“I’m very excited to say the least,” the 24-year-old told afcbTV.

“The excitement of the Premier League last year was amazing. It was a dream come true to have an opportunity to represent a team and obviously how the season ended wasn’t to my liking.

“Now to have the opportunity to join another amazing club like Bournemouth, I’m very excited to get started.”

Asked what he learnt about the Premier League from playing in it last season, the USA captain added: “That it’s the best league in the world. It definitely doesn’t lack quality.

“Week in, week out you’re playing games against the highest calibre of players, highest calibre of managers and it throws something new at you every opportunity that you get.

“Growing up, all I watched was the Premier League. So last year, having that opportunity to fulfil that dream was amazing.”

Adams had previously been linked with a move away to Chelsea earlier this summer, but has now completed his switch to Cherries.

“A lot of things attracted me to Bournemouth,” he explained.

“The manager himself is one of the up and coming young managers in the world.

“He was actually playing for NYCFC when I was playing at New York Red Bulls and coming through the system there, so having a little bit of familiarity there.

“The amazing sporting director (Richard Hughes) and CEO (Neill Blake), through so many conversations about how I’ll be used in this amazing project that they’re building here was very exciting as well.”

He added: “The club’s ambition is something that matches mine for sure.

“They want to take their game to the top and they have people in and around the club now that are able to do that.

“When they showed that ambition through the owner, the CEO and the sporting director, now having an ambitious coach as well, attracting players, which is very important obviously to the succession of the team, it excited me a lot.”

During his time with New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig, Adams has already racked up trophies including the MLS Supporters Shield and DFB-Pokal.

Discussing those past experiences he can bring into the young squad at Cherries, the Wappingers Falls-born talent said: “I’ve been extremely fortunate for some of the clubs that I’ve played in and some of the situations that I’ve been involved in.

“Winning a Supporters Shield in MLS at a very young age inside a very good team, going to Germany and playing in a couple of cup finals and having the opportunity to win one as well.

“I’ve been very fortunate I would say. The teams that I’ve been on have been very, very good.

“And taking those experiences and taking that hunger to want to win titles, hopefully I can bring that here and start to push the club forward.”

#PLStories- Levi Colwill says farewell to Albion after Chelsea’s loan deal ends #CHELSEAFC #BHAFC

Albion wanted Colwill as their priority target in defence after an exceptional season on loan from Chelsea.

Colwill became pivotal at left centre back as Albion secured Europa League for the first time ever.

There were question marks over whether the England under 21 international would stay at Chelsea this season, with Albion guaranteeing him game time and European football if he were to return.

But Colwill, 20, has now agreed a new six-year contract with Mauricio Pochettino’s side and looks set to be one of their starting defenders.

He was one of Albion’s priority targets this summer but Pochettino insisted he would get the game time he wanted at Chelsea.

Colwill posted on his Instagram this evening a message to Brighton.

He said: “To Brighton and Hove Albion.

“I am proud to have played a small part in the clubs success last season.

“You gave me an opportunity to play in the Premier League when no one else did. I thank Graham Potter for first bringing me to the club and to all the employees at the stadium and training ground for making it a great place to perform and develop

“To the fans, you’ve always had my back. Since I got into the side, your continuous support made me feel comfortable to play the way I wanted to play and not fear about making mistakes.

“You gave me a platform to shine and show my ability in the best league of the world. I will never forget that you supported me.

“Lastly Roberto De Zerbi, you challenged me every day. You made me think and see football in a different way. I cannot thank you enough.

“Thank you again. LC.”

Despite only making 17 Premier League appearances, Colwill became one of the first names on the team sheet in the second half of the season.

Chelsea turned down a £30 million bid for Colwill from Albion and it was reported that De Zerbi’s side were set to bid £40 million for him.

Albion signed Brazilian defender Igor Julio from Serie A side Fiorentina last Wednesday as an alternative option.

The 25-year-old Brazilian signed on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee which is believed to be in the region of £14 million.

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony hoping to become more ‘complete’ player #AFCB

Winger Anthony signed a five-year deal back in February to confirm his long-term future lies with Cherries, the former Arsenal youngster now entering his second season in the Premier League.

Much has changed since Anthony got his first taste of top-flight football against his former club last August, with the man who handed him his Premier League debut, Scott Parker, long gone.

Parker’s replacement Gary O’Neil has also moved on, with Basque boss Andoni Iraola in charge at Cherries.

With the Spaniard liking his teams to press high and use the full width of the pitch, it appears the change in management could be a good fit for Anthony.

When this was put to the wideman, Anthony told the Daily Echo: “Different playing style, different ideas and I’m enjoying it.

“It’s been a tough pre-season getting to know the way he wants us to play and to be honest we’re still learning as we go, but I think we’re all enjoying it and combining into what he wants us to do.

“I probably played a lot of my minutes last year as a wing-back and doing a lot of defensive work.

“Obviously this year we’ve got a different formation and there’s a lot of running in behind, but yes, there’s a lot of work to be done on my game especially.”

Finding himself at Cherries after being released by Arsenal, it has not been a straight forward path to the top for Anthony, who was playing his football on loan in the sixth tier as recently as 2020.

“I’m working out every day to improve not just what I’m not so good at,” continued the 23-year-old.

“But what I’m very good at as well, to try and become more of a complete player.”

Asked if he has any particular goals for the campaign ahead, Anthony remained coy, sharing: “Nothing too specific, but obviously just want to do as well as I can and try and help wherever I can.

“There’s obviously personal targets I want to try and hit, but my main goal is to help the team in whatever capacity I’m needed.”

With every outfielder encouraged to get forward when the opportunity arises, players often have to deputise in unfamiliar positions to help Cherries keep their shape.

After playing as a quasi-wing back for much of last season, Anthony is more than willing to help out at the back if needs must.

He restarted: “As a team we want to help each other out where we can and if I’m not attacking then I’m going to try and do my best for the team wherever they need me.

“If I have to cover, then that’s what I’ll do. But my job is to try and attack and create chances and that’s what I’m trying to do for the team.”

Luton defender Tom Lockyer was overjoyed to get a first 90 minutes under his belt since the play-off semi-final second leg win over Sunderland back in May after what he described as a ‘weird’ pre-season.The 28-year-old started training later than the rest of his team-mates after undergoing extensive medical checks following his on-field collapse inside the opening 10 minutes of the play-off final at Wembley, which eventually required an operation to correct an atrial fibrillation in June.Following his new contract, Lockyer was back at the Brache with Town’s squad, but was held back to begin with when the physical activities started to ensure he had made a full recovery. He didn’t play as Town beat Peterborough United 3-1 in a behind-closed-doors at St George’s Park, before heading out to Slovenia for a warm weather training camp.Lockyer then played an hour in the 1-1 draw against Ipswich on Tuesday night, going on to start at Hillsborough for the Hatters’ second match, Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and Carlton Morris on target in the victory. The Welsh international lasted the entire match, along with James Shea, Alfie Doughty and Mads Andersen, as speaking to the club’s official website on how he found it and the training so far, he said: “Tough, really tough, it’s been a different pre-season for myself.“It’s been a weird one if I’m being honest, I’ve always been told I’m a couple of weeks behind, but it doesn’t sit right with me.Tom Lockyer applauds the Hatters after a 2-1 pre-season friendly win at Sheffield Wednesday – pic: Ashley Allen/Getty Images“I want to be up with the lads, so to finally get 90 is a good feeling and I know it’s in the locker now.”When the lads start running in the off season ready for the pre-season, obviously I wasn’t allowed to do too much.”I was only allowed to do a couple of 5ks just to see where I was at and obviously when the lads are doing their own stuff, they’re sprinting box to boxes and very S&C (strength and conditioning) specific, which I wasn’t able to do, which meant when I came in, they were very conscious of me not breaking down as that would set me back further.“So it’s been a different pre-season, but hopefully now with 90 in the tank I can look forward.”With Town heading to Wolves on Wednesday and then travelling to Germany to take on Vfl Bochum in two matches next weekend, on what he expects to do before the Premier League season starts in full at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, August 12, Lockyer continued: “Who knows? It’s the S&C who run everything with their numbers and data, whatever I’m asked to play, I’ll play.”Obviously I’ll always be pushing for more, but the main thing is to try and be as fit as possible going into that first game.”On the prospect of facing the Seagulls in what will be Town’s first top flight encounter for over 30 years, Lockyer added: “You don’t really want to look too far ahead, you can get carried away with the season that is coming up.”We have to focus on getting our principles right on the pitch, doing everything we can in training for the first game, so we’re well drilled for that first game.”You want to win the pre-season friendlies, but there’s a deeper meaning for us at the minute.”Shape, how we want to play, how we want to move the ball, getting to know new players who’ve come in and them getting used to our style of play.”So you’ve got to see preseason for what it is, but I’m delighted to get 90 minutes under my belt and I know a few of the lads have as well.”

#PLStories- Milos Kerkez explains reasoning behind joining AFC Bournemouth #AFCB

Cherries parted with a reported £15.5million to bring the Hungarian left-back to Vitality Stadium, swooping in after it seemed Kerkoz was close to joining Champions League outfit Lazio.

Having already worn the famous red and black of AC Milan, the 19-year-old will wear the same colours on the south coast next season.

Discussing the move with afcb.co.uk, Kerkez shared: “It’s a really warm welcome and I’m really happy and delighted to be here, also my family’s, so I’m really, really happy.

“We got in touch with Bournemouth and I feel the kind of respect the club and the people showed us, really, that was the big part of me coming here, so was a few busy days, but now that I’m finally here, I’m really happy and excited.”Born in what is now Serbia but opting to play for Hungary internationally, Kerkez believes all young footballers dream of playing in the Premier League.

He continued: “It was a big decision, but really, since I was a kid, I believe everyone dreams of playing in the best league in the world.

“That’s the Premier League and to have opportunity to come to a club like Bournemouth is a big thing. So I’m really, really happy to be here.

“Like I said, really, the respect that me and my family got, really from Bournemouth, the people, they came to visit us at home to talk to us about the project, about the plan, and that was the big thing for me and my family to decide to come here.”

Cherries swapped head coaches in June, with rookie boss Gary O’Neil dismissed when highly-rated Andoni Iraola became available.

Iraola’s style of play was another big part of Kerkez’s decision to join Cherries.

He restarted: “The coach has a big impact on my move to come here.

“He comes from the Spanish League, so also, his philosophy, I like it.

“The club’s philosophy, his philosophy, I love it.

“And that’s what makes me come here now.”

#PLStories- Ryan Christie keen to extend AFC Bournemouth contract #AFCB

Christie, 28, is heading into the final year of his deal at Vitality Stadium, having arrived from Celtic in the summer of 2021.

The Scotland international has made 75 appearances for Cherries, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. He played a key role in clinching promotion from the Championship, before then helping keep the club in the Premier League last season.

The hard-working midfielder has featured in both friendly matches under new boss Andoni Iraola so far. He played 90 minutes in the 4-0 win over Hibernian, before again starting and playing the first half of Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Christie has previously expressed how settled he feels on the south coast of England, becoming a dad for the first time last month.

Asked if there has been any dialogue with the club regarding his future and current contract situation, Christie told the Daily Echo: “No discussions yet, but I’m more than happy (here).

“Especially with the baby now, I love living in Bournemouth. It’s a great place to stay and my family is nice and settled as well.

“I’m not really thinking about that right now. Obviously the pre-season is pretty tough, so you just need to get the head down and keep working hard.

“My main hope is to impress the new boss as much as I can.

“If that leads to talks about a new contract, so be it. I’ll be looking forward to that hopefully.”

Christie and his fiancée Georgie welcomed a baby boy into the world last month.

For Christie, that capped off a busy summer, which had seen him away representing Scotland just five days before his son was born.

“It was absolutely amazing, to be fair,” he said, discussing his new arrival.

“It was obviously a bit of a whirlwind when he came, but I think we kind of timed it perfectly.

“I got back from Scotland camp and two days later we went into labour.

“It was nice because I got two weeks at the end of my break just in the house with him getting used to baby life.”

Christie’s final game before returning home was the bizarre Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia at Hampden Park.

The Highlander was introduced for the closing stages of the 2-0 win, coming onto the pitch at 11.16pm after the game had been delayed due to wet weather in Glasgow.

“That was one of the strangest games I’ve been a part of,” Christie admitted.

“The rain was absolutely mental and then there was talk of the game being postponed and playing the next morning.

“I think everybody was desperate just to get the game done, especially me with a pregnant fiancée at home, waiting for me to get home. So I was watching the clock half the night!

“The most important thing is we got a win to round off another very successful camp for us.”
