Goalkeeper Andre Onana was critical of Manchester United’s poor finishing following their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening.
Andre Onana said: “No, I don’t think they were better than us. We made some mistakes in the second half, but football is not only about one half. We started the game well and we created chances. Unfortunately, we didn’t score and obviously that was a key point. If we had scored in the first half we would have got something, for sure. Football is about scoring goals, especially when you play against a good opponent. We had some good chances and we didn’t score. We have to keep calm, keep working and I think we will be OK.”
United, who saw a penalty shout turned down prior to the interval, failed to recover once Sarr fired Spurs in front just four minutes after half-time. Martinez then turned Ben Davies’ effort into his own net with seven minutes of normal time remaining. Though the second goal was pleasing on the eye from a Spurs perspective, it was a result of poor United defending. Onana, however, claimed some of the responsibility for the goal, questioning his own communication with his defence.
Andre Onana added: “Maybe my communication at the back with my defenders [wasn’t good]. Licha [Martinez], unfortunately, scored that goal. We know how good he is. A lot of things happened in that second half, but that is part of the game and we just have to look forward.”
