Ruud Van Nistel Roy
As Leicester City prepares for their first season without Jamie Vardy since 2011-12, the club is looking to bring in a new striker to lead the line in the upcoming Championship campaign. Vardy’s departure marks the end of an era, and with it comes the opportunity for a new forward to establish themselves as the team’s main attacking threat. Over the years, many strikers have struggled to fill Vardy’s boots, with Kelechi Iheanacho coming closest due to his FA Cup performances. However, Patson Daka, who joined for over £20 million, has yet to secure a consistent starting role, starting no more than six consecutive league games in his four seasons at the club.
Ruud van Nistelrooy said: “As a striker, you need some rhythm. That could be a reason (why Daka has struggled). But it’s a post-Jamie Vardy era and there will be opportunities for others. It’s up to them to take it.”
Ruud van Nistelrooy said: “Yes he can (be the main man). If you speak about this season, Jamie was still the main striker in my eyes. I played him every game and every minute because he’s the main striker. He’s going to give us the most goals and most impact in games, also in assists. In that sense, it must have been hard for Patson that he was not the main striker. He was important in some games. He always entered the game in the last 15 or 20 minutes. He did a job always, there. He always trains hard for the team. He’s a great team member. But he wasn’t the main striker. He’s been here a while.”
The potential new signing will be afforded the luxury of building rhythm and consistency, an opportunity not often granted to previous recruits during Vardy’s reign. Daka’s future remains uncertain, with one year left on his contract, and it appears more likely that he will be sold rather than retained. However, if he stays and Ruud van Nistelrooy continues as manager, Daka could still compete for the first-choice striker position. Van Nistelrooy, who scouted Daka while at PSV Eindhoven, has expressed confidence in his abilities, suggesting that Daka could step up in Vardy’s absence.
As the club transitions into this new chapter, the upcoming summer transfer window will be crucial for Leicester City. The focus will be on securing a forward who can replicate Vardy’s impact and help the team navigate the challenges of the Championship. With the right signing, Leicester hopes to lay the foundation for a successful future without their legendary striker.
