Leicester City Champions
Leicester City title-winner Jeff Schlupp has become a free agent following his release from Crystal Palace. Schlupp, who joined Palace for £12 million in January 2017, has had a versatile career, playing as a striker, winger, and left-back. During his time at Palace, he primarily played as a central midfielder, making 247 appearances and contributing 19 goals and 17 assists. Recently, Schlupp spent the latter half of the season on loan at Celtic, aiding them in securing the Scottish Premiership title and featuring in their Champions League campaign. Celtic reportedly wants to retain Schlupp, but Championship clubs Millwall and QPR are also showing interest.
Jeff Schlupp said: “It’s been an incredible eight years playing for this club. I’ve met some great people – the chairman, the gaffer, and all the staff I’ve met over the years – and it’s meant a lot to have played for Crystal Palace. A big ‘thank you’ to this group, who have achieved something so special. You ask anybody about the Palace fans, and they know about the atmosphere that they create, and the amount of times they’ve pulled us through in difficult times. They’ve been our 12th man – so thank you to all the fans who have always supported me. Hopefully I’ve done you proud. I’ll definitely see you again soon.”
Steve Parish said: “Across nine separate seasons with Crystal Palace, Jeffrey has made many an important contribution to the football club – and scored some incredible goals! Whatever has been asked of him – whatever the role, whenever the time – he has given his utmost, and it speaks volumes that he has made such a great impression in different systems and under different managers. Jeffrey is somebody who has contributed massively to the club – and not only has he been outstanding for the club, he’s also been a fantastic friend. He is everything that is Crystal Palace. Successful squads are built on players of Jeffrey’s calibre and character, and we have much to thank him for as he moves on from SE25. He leaves with our heartfelt gratitude, and the very best wishes of everyone at Crystal Palace.”
Schlupp’s departure marks the end of an era for Leicester City, as Jamie Vardy’s exit means the club will not have any of their 2016 Premier League title-winners in their squad next season. Currently, seven title-winners remain active, with Schlupp, Vardy, and Daniel Amartey as free agents. Meanwhile, Kasper Schmeichel is at Celtic, and Riyad Mahrez, N’Golo Kante, and Demarai Gray are playing in Saudi Arabia. The question now arises whether Schlupp could be a valuable addition for Leicester City in the Championship.
The Leicester Mercury is celebrating Schlupp’s career with a special edition, highlighting his journey from non-league football to becoming an England international, and revisiting the club’s historic 2016 Premier League triumph.
