In a recent update, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that goalkeepers Ederson and Stefan Ortega are expected to remain at the club this summer. Despite previous interest from other clubs, including a significant temptation for Ederson to move to Saudi Arabia last summer, Guardiola has managed to convince both players to stay at the Etihad Stadium. The manager’s decision to experiment with Ortega in several high-profile matches this season, such as the away game against Liverpool, had raised questions about the future of the club’s goalkeeping lineup. However, Guardiola’s latest statements suggest a stable outlook for the upcoming season.
Pep Guardiola said: “We have spoken about the squad situation and the two goalkeepers that we have will continue.”
Guardiola’s comments align with his earlier remarks following Manchester City’s final game at Fulham, where he indicated that significant changes to the squad were unlikely. The club has been actively pursuing new signings, with three new faces expected to join alongside the four players who arrived in January. However, Guardiola emphasized that unless players request transfers, he does not foresee many departures.
Pep Guardiola said: “I don’t have that feeling. Maybe the club is a little different but I have 24 players and I saw them training the other day and said oh my god how good they are. We have a good squad, they have contracts, they want to stay here and I don’t want to have a massive amount of players.”
Guardiola reflected on his first season at Manchester City, highlighting the challenges of managing a squad with numerous expiring contracts. He noted that the current situation is different, with 24 players under contract, making it less straightforward to make changes.
Pep Guardiola said: “I remember the first season when I arrived and we didn’t win one title. There were nine, 10, 11 players out of contract and we didn’t extend except Yaya Toure. Then you can make changes but today we have 24 players under contract, it’s not as simple as that. That’s why I don’t have the feeling. But we will see. The summer is long, World Cup, maybe players realise they are not going to play and want to leave. But it’s not my business.”
Guardiola’s statements provide a clear indication of his confidence in the current squad’s capabilities and his intent to maintain stability at the club. While the summer transfer window remains open and the World Cup could influence players’ decisions, Guardiola appears focused on building upon the existing foundation at Manchester City.
