Manchester City is on the verge of signing Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal reportedly worth £33.7 million (€40 million). This transfer marks City’s first acquisition of a left-back in six years, addressing a long-standing gap in their squad. The move comes as Pep Guardiola seeks to bolster his defense following the departure of Alex Zinchenko to Arsenal in 2022. Despite Ait-Nouri’s offensive prowess, there are lingering doubts about his defensive consistency and ability to adapt to Guardiola’s tactical demands.
Ait-Nouri’s got a lot of talent. He’s got a lot of really impressive qualities going forward, in particular. I think wing-back rather than full-back is definitely his position because defensively he can switch off, he can struggle, but he’s got bags of quality going forward with an eye for a goal and an assist. He’s got excellent close control and can take players on – he’s an excellent dribbler. So all of those things are reasons why Man City are moving for him. I do think that he’s gonna have a little bit of a challenge in making that step up.
He’s pretty well-liked. A bit of a quiet guy, relatively understated. There were times previously, we’re talking to a few years ago now, where he was never a bad trainer or a bad professional, but maybe he was slightly lazy at times and I think that sort of was coached out of him and he grew out of that a little bit which is obviously a good sign. He’s not the biggest character, not someone who’s necessarily gonna throw their hand up in the dressing room and lift the team. He’s someone who is a bit quieter, a bit in the background as a person, as a player, he’s got a lot of flair, and I think Wolves fans will wish him well.
Ait-Nouri’s addition to Manchester City is seen as a strategic move to enhance their attacking options from the left flank, given his ability to contribute with goals and assists. However, his defensive lapses remain a concern, particularly in a team renowned for its defensive solidity under Guardiola. The 24-year-old’s quiet demeanor and past issues with consistency in training have been noted, though he has reportedly matured in recent years.
The transition to a club of Manchester City’s stature will undoubtedly be a test for Ait-Nouri, who will need to adapt quickly to the demands of the Premier League champions. Despite these challenges, the move is viewed positively by Wolves supporters, who appreciate his contributions and wish him success in his new venture. The signing highlights City’s commitment to strengthening their squad depth and addressing key areas ahead of the new season.
