Francesco Calvo, who has held senior roles at prestigious clubs like Barcelona and Juventus, is now tasked with repairing the strained relationship between Aston Villa’s fan base and the club’s business department. The discontent among Villa supporters was notably fueled by high ticket prices for last season’s Champions League matches, which reached up to £97 for adults. The outgoing president of business operations, Chris Heck, faced criticism for his lack of engagement with the club’s Fan Advisory Board (FAB), missing key events and failing to connect with the fans. Calvo’s extensive experience, including his tenure at Roma, positions him well to bridge this gap and restore trust.
Francesco Calvo said: “Having held senior positions at some of Europe’s elite clubs, including Barcelona and Juventus, I understand the importance of managing a demanding fan base. My experience at Roma, home to one of Italy’s most passionate supporter groups, has prepared me to address the challenges at Aston Villa.”
Calvo’s primary challenge will be to rebuild the relationship with the fans, a task complicated by the recent discontinuation of the club’s FAB in its current form. To address the concerns of younger supporters, Aston Villa plans to establish a Junior FAB for fans aged 16–21, ensuring their voices are heard at Villa Park. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to engage more effectively with the fan community.
The previous administration under Chris Heck left a legacy of disconnection with fans, highlighted by his absence from key FAB meetings and a perceived lack of transparency. Heck’s tenure was marked by a focus on business achievements, which did not resonate well with the supporter base. In contrast, former CEO Christian Purslow had made efforts to engage with the FAB, discussing and explaining important decisions to maintain a dialogue with the fans.
In addition to Calvo’s efforts to mend fan relations, Aston Villa is offering a range of merchandise to celebrate the club’s 150th anniversary. The club store features a variety of products, from a ‘dream scene’ painting to a replica of Villa Park, aiming to appeal to fans looking to express their club pride. These items, alongside commemorative clothing and accessories, are designed to enhance the supporter experience and foster a sense of unity among the fan base.
Calvo’s success will depend on his ability to restore the fans’ faith in the club’s leadership and create a more inclusive and engaging environment for all supporters.
