#PLStories- Jack Wilshere backs Eddie Howe for England job if Southgate leaves #AFCB #WorldCup2022 #NUFC

FORMER Cherries midfielder Jack Wilshere believes his old boss Eddie Howe should succeed Gareth Southgate if the England manager decides to leave his post. Southgate is reportedly considering his future after England’s World Cup dream came to an end following a 2-1 defeat to reigning champions France at the Quarter-final stage. With Southgate’s future in doubt, Howe has instantly been mentioned in discussions regarding potential replacement. Wilshere, who played under Howe at Cherries on loan from Arsenal, was capped 34 times by the Three Lions. In a column for the Sun, the 30-year-old gave a glowing reference for the current Newcastle United boss. He said: “If Gareth Southgate does leave the England job, I’d love the FA to try and get Eddie Howe. “I know how good Eddie is from my time at Bournemouth but people wondered whether he could make that step up to a bigger club. “Well, now he has shown at Newcastle how skilled he is at developing players and he’s turning them into title challengers. “The problem for the FA would be persuading him to swap his club for his country — and I’m not sure they’ll be able to do that. “He might feel it’s too early for him and that he wants more time to build success in the North East. “If he delivered silverware for Newcastle he’d be a god. “But the England job is the pinnacle for any English coach and it might be hard to turn down if there is a proper offer on the table.” Wilshere then went on to discuss Howe’s strengths, stressing how his attention to detail made players want to work hard for him. He restarted: “Eddie is so thorough in everything he does — from the way he organises the season, to his well-thought-out training sessions, to the one-to-one attention he gives players. “He’s a top man-manager. I’d only had Arsene Wenger as a club boss before I went to Bournemouth and he was a great man-manager, too — but in a different way to Eddie. “Arsene would give you a lot of trust and confidence and left you to get on with it.  Eddie was more detailed, probably because the level of player he had was not as good as Arsenal’s. “Eddie had to coach more. Arsene didn’t really have to tell Samir Nasri or Tomas Rosicky how to play between the lines. “Eddie would tell you how to do it and give you feedback — not always positive — but the way he did it made you really want to play for him. “I couldn’t recommend him highly enough.”
Gareth Southgate Manager

#PLStories- Gareth Southgate on giving Saints keeper Fraser Foster a chance #SAINTSFC

ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate insisted all of his goalkeepers “have slightly different attributes” but refused to hint whether we would see any rotation in his net. Saints stopper Fraser Forster received a late call-up last week to bring him back into the Three Lions squad for the first time in nearly six years. The last of the 34-year-old’s six England caps came in an international friendly versus Australia, back in May 2016 – ahead of the European Championships in France, where he travelled but did not feature. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is yet to let Southgate down across any of his 43 caps for his country, and performed well across 90 minutes in the 2-1 win over Switzerland on Saturday. Asked if it is more difficult to rotate your goalkeeper than the rest of the XI, Southgate responded: “Well, it’s no different to any other position really, because the profiles of the players do alter. “If we start with Harry Kane as a centre-forward he has certain attributes of coming to link the game, coming short to feet. “If we play Ollie (Watkins), he is a player that is better running in behind defences and our players have to recognise those differences.” England manager Gareth Southgate (Pic: PA) He continued: “It’s the same with all the goalkeepers, they all have slightly different attributes that the more you know about your teammates will help you to have an understanding. “The profile of the goalkeeper does change certain aspects of how you would like to play, but that is really the same on every position on the pitch.” Forster, who has played the last 12 Premier League matches for manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, had a stroke of fortune to get back into the England reckoning. Southgate could opt to give both Pope and Forster 45 minutes versus the African nation tomorrow, or allow Pickford to retain the shirt altogether.
Tino Livramento

#PLStories- Tino Livramento tries to force Gareth Southgate’s hand with Stellar performances #SAINTSFC

TINO Livramento admitted “there’s plenty of things I need to work on” but targets a good run of games with England’s under-21s to force Gareth Southgate to take notice. The Saints youngster insisted that playing with the Young Lions is “the main thing” for him now, after impressing in EURO qualifying for Lee Carsley’s side last week. Livramento, 19, made his fourth cap for the highest level of England’s youth setup in the 4-1 win over Andorra on Friday, providing two strong assists for Folarin Balogun and Anthony Gordon’s goals. A number of the under-21’s previous stars have received the call from senior manager Southgate, including the likes of Conor Gallagher and captain Marc Guehi – who both excel for Crystal Palace in the Premier League, and started at Wembley on Saturday. Young Lions captain Marc Guehi was promoted to the senior squad last week (Pic: PA) Livramento himself has made 23 league appearances in his debut senior season, for Saints, and good performances could have propelled him into consideration. However, England are currently blessed with full-backs and Livramento likely finds himself behind some of the country’s best talent – including teammate Kyle Walker-Peters, who marked his Three Lions debut with a win over Switzerland “There’s plenty of things that I need to work on,” Livramento admitted, when asked how he views the competition ahead of him. “If I have a really good run of games, hopefully the gaffer (Gareth Southgate) will have a look at me and think he wants to give me a chance.” England manager Gareth Southgate (Pic: PA) He continued: “I’m always going to give my all 100 per cent going forward, trying to get assists, or defensively being solid, winning my headers, staying focused all the time. “In the first camp we had a few boys who are now with the seniors. But I feel like when the time’s due, the time’s due. I’m not going to rush anything. “As long as I’m getting called up to the Under-21s, that’s the main thing for me right now. Tino Livramento has been called up to four successive England under-21 squads, but missed November's through injury (Pic: PA) “To be at an international level where I’m playing with all these different players and gaining experience at this level, that’s a major thing for me.” At under-21 level, Livramento is playing with, testing himself against and learning from some of England's biggest prodigies. Alongside him in the starting XI on Friday were Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey and exciting PSV starlet Noni Madueke. Winger Noni Madueke, 20, has garnered a cult following through his potential (Pic: PA) Among the bench included Gordon, who has been Everton’s shining light in a disastrous season, Manchester United loanee James Garner and previously Saints-linked Djed Spence. “When you’re playing with these type of players all you have to do is put it in certain areas and you know they’re going to be there,” the 19-year-old added. “For the first goal, there was a good bit of link-up on the side with me, Morgan (Gibbs-White) and Harvey. For the second one, I just fed it into the area where I thought the winger was going to be and it was a great finish.” Harvey Elliott, 18, made his England under-21 debut on Friday (Pic: PA) Livramento continued: “It’s been good. We have the boys who are younger coming through, the 2002s, and obviously Levi (Colwill) and Harvey who are 2003s. “I feel like a lot of boys have been in the set-up from early ages so we understand the identity of what it’s like to play with England. “I think the main thing is when everyone is getting on the ball and enjoying themselves, then we’re going to see a complete team performance. We know our levels and we know we can achieve so much more.”
Theo Walcott

#PLStories- #TheoWalcott believes confidence will help England ‘get far’ at Euro 2020 #SAINTSFC

SAINTS star Theo Walcott believes England will “get far” at Euro 2020, as they face a crunch quarter-final tie with Ukraine in Rome tonight (8pm). Gareth Southgate’s men are yet to concede a goal at the tournament, having played their three group games and last-16 encounter against Germany at Wembley. And Walcott, who played 47 times for the Three Lions, insists the confidence gained by England will help them progress to the business end of the tournament. The Saints forward told talkSPORT: “Everyone’s been saying how England are slow burners, but I’m just pleased that in tournament football, I don’t care how you play as long as you get results. “Slowly but surely, England have started to play at a level where England can go even further. “What I like is the confidence flowing through the whole team. You look at Kalvin Phillips, he was in the Championship the year before and seeing how he’s developed into one of the first names on the team sheet. “Everyone questioning Gareth at times, he’s the manager and knows what he’s doing and he’s showing that now. “Everyone’s smiling and so happy. It’s all positive energy. That’s why I feel like we are going to get far.”
Ben White Leeds

#PLStories- Brighton’s #BenWhite shines on his full England debut against Romania #BHAFC

The 23-year-old started and played the full 90 minutes for England in their 1-0 win over Romania in friendly at the Riverside Stadium yesterday evening. He became the first Albion player to start for England since skipper Lewis Dunk in a friendly against the USA at Wembley in November 2018. He partnered Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings at centre-half as part of a back four with Everton’s Ben Godfrey at right back and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw at left back. His performance earnt him plaudits from former England internationals Ian Wright and Lee Dixon, who were impressed by how ‘calm’ and ‘composed’ he was, with Dixon picking out White’s as the best performers in the back four. But after the game Gareth Southgate refused to be drawn on who will replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, with White one of six players in the running for the vacant spot in his their 26-man squad for the Euros. He said: “We will check how we are after the game medically and check there is nothing else we need to go through, so we will make that decision in the next 24 hours.” The only goal of the game came in the 68th minute after substitute Tiberiu Capusa’s pulled down Jack Grealish in the box. Marcus Rashford stepped up and calmly tucked his effort into the bottom corner. England won another penalty in the 77th minute after Vlad Chiriches bundled Dominic Calvert-Lewin over. Substitute Jordan Henderson took it but saw his effort saved by Sparta Prague’s Florin Nita. England had been unlucky not to take the lead in the first half after Calvert-Lewin’s header and Jadon Sancho’s curling effort both came back off the crossbar.
