Leeds United fans jeered Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins during England’s victory against Romania at the Riverside Stadium.
Gareth Southgate said: “Both Ollie and Patrick in particular, their goals record has been good. We like the personalities of both. Ollie is a player who we’ve had less interaction with in the past. It’s going to be good to get to know him. We like his pressing, we like his speed and runs in behind. There’s some improvements he could make with linking the game.”
The Bamford chants were picked up by the commentary team on ITV and Villa fans on social media were less than impressed.
One supporter said: “Leeds fans singing Patrick Bamford when Watkins gets the ball only embarrassing yourselves boys. Stay classy #lufc fans singing Patrick Bamford’s name every time Ollie touches the ball,” wrote another.
A third posted: “Leeds fans have bought tickets to watch England just so they can blart about their player not being picked in the squad. Hear all the salty Leeds fans booing Watkins and singing Patrick Bamford?” asked another.
While a fifth added: “Leeds fans are genuinely embarrassing. If you’re gonna go to an England game. Support the players on the pitch.”
