Caoimhin Kelleher
Caoimhin Kelleher, the Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper, is reportedly close to leaving Liverpool as he seeks a fresh start to secure regular first-team football. With just 12 months remaining on his current contract at Anfield, Kelleher has expressed a strong desire to move during the summer transfer window. His ambitions to become a first-choice goalkeeper have been hindered by the presence of Alisson Becker and the impending arrival of Georgia international Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.
Heimir Hallgrimsson said: “I just want him to go to a club where he will play on a regular basis. He has been playing at the highest level, whether it’s the Champions League or the Premier League, and done really well. I just want him to be happy and playing regularly. I know he wants to be playing at the highest level. I guess – I don’t know for sure – he will be playing at the highest level. He has spoken about that himself. I don’t mind [where], so long as he’s playing on a regular basis because he is too good not to be playing.”
Caoimhin Kelleher said: “I’ve made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out. The club’s made that decision to get another goalkeeper and from the outside looking in, it looks like they’ve made a decision to go in a different direction. Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like that’s 100% my decision but at times it’s not always in my hands. It’s been reported that Liverpool have rejected a few bids as well. My ambition is clear that I think I’m good enough and I want to go out and prove it.”
Despite Liverpool’s initial valuation of around £20 million for Kelleher, the club is now in advanced negotiations with Brentford, who are set to lose their current goalkeeper Mark Flekken to Bayer Leverkusen for approximately £8.5 million. The proposed deal for Kelleher is expected to be worth an initial £12.5 million, with potential add-ons increasing the total to £18 million.
Kelleher has maintained a professional demeanor throughout his time at Liverpool, impressing with his attitude and performances whenever called upon. Last season, he made 20 appearances, including 10 in the Premier League, stepping up admirably when Alisson was sidelined with a hamstring injury. However, with Mamardashvili’s arrival, Kelleher’s chances of securing a regular starting role at Liverpool have diminished, prompting his pursuit of opportunities elsewhere.
