Sunderland boxer Josh Kelly is set to make a triumphant return to his home turf as he prepares for a significant bout against Romanian opponent Flavius Biea at the Utilita Arena Newcastle. The 31-year-old middleweight, known for his confident demeanor and impressive record of 18 fights, 16 wins, one draw, and one loss, has been making headlines by challenging notable fighters Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. Kelly expressed his belief that he could defeat both, adding an intriguing layer to his upcoming fight.
Josh Kelly said: “I’d probably ‘knock Benn out’, and would ‘stand Eubank on his head and outbox him’.”
At a recent press conference, Kelly exuded confidence, attributing much of his assuredness to fighting on familiar ground. His excitement for a lively atmosphere was palpable as he described his preference for energetic fight nights.
Josh Kelly said: “I just like it being loud and rowdy in there, I don’t like the dead atmospheres, I’m a fight night fighter for sure.”
Kelly also touched upon his football loyalties, revealing his support for Sunderland while acknowledging the impressive season Newcastle United had. He shared his thoughts on the intensity of local derbies and the emotional stakes involved.
Josh Kelly said: “I’m a Sunderland fan, and I support the club, but football is football, and boxing is a totally different sport to be honest. It was unbelievable, obviously Newcastle had a great season, but to win the play-off final the way we did was just mental so I felt overwhelmed. The Premier League is always going to be tough, and Newcastle has grown so much as a team, but I think derbies always bring out something different.”
As the conversation shifted back to boxing, Kelly highlighted his commitment to setting a positive example for young fans in the region. He emphasized the importance of capitalizing on his prime and making the most of his current opportunities.
Josh Kelly said: “I need to capitalise on my prime, which is now, as I know it won’t last forever and I need to put my foot down now to make the most of it.”
The much-anticipated fight between Josh Kelly and Flavius Biea will headline the Fast & Furious fight card, airing on Channel 5 on Friday, June 6. The undercard is scheduled to start at 7 pm, with Kelly’s ring walk expected around 10:30 pm. Fans can look forward to an electrifying night as Kelly aims to deliver a memorable performance for his hometown crowd.
