Manchester City is on the brink of signing Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Rayan Ait-Nouri in a deal reportedly valued at £50 million. This move marks City’s first transfer of the summer as they aim to finalize business ahead of the upcoming World Club Championship in the United States. The acquisition of Ait-Nouri would be City’s first left-back signing since Angelino in 2019, highlighting their intent to reinforce their full-back positions.
Pep Guardiola said: “We are pushing ahead with our efforts to secure the £50m left-back in what could be our first transfer of the summer.”
Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: “When I look back, last summer, we probably should have been more aggressive in some of the changes we needed to do. We didn’t do that and that ended up costing us this year. We already started that rebuild of this team in January. And I can tell you today, we have clearly identified who exactly are the targets, in what positions, and we have our clear number one option, our clear number two option. We’ll go about our business, and it will be very clear, very swift.”
The Algeria international, who played 37 times for Wolves in the Premier League last season, contributed significantly with four goals and seven assists. Despite manager Vitor Pereira’s desire to retain Ait-Nouri, Wolves appear ready to capitalize on the player’s market value. This transfer aligns with City’s strategy to bolster their squad with specialist full-backs, especially as Kyle Walker’s exit seems imminent.
Meanwhile, Wolves have been active in the transfer market, having finalized a deal with Manchester United for Matheus Cunha, reportedly worth around £65 million. Additionally, the club has released attacking midfielder Pablo Sarabia, who shared a heartfelt farewell message to Wolves supporters via Instagram. Sarabia expressed gratitude for the experiences and memories shared with the club and its fans.
As City prepares to welcome Ait-Nouri, this transfer signifies their determination to address last summer’s shortcomings and strengthen their squad for the challenges ahead. The move is expected to be completed within the next ten days, setting the stage for a busy transfer window for the former Premier League champions.
