Dion Sanderson could well be at Bramall Lane on the opening day of the new season, but not in the colours of red and white. Lee Bowyer, manager of Birmingham City, who United face on August 7, has revealed he believes he has secured the services of the 21-year-old on loan. Sanderson is close to agreeing a new deal with his parent club Wolves, and will then make the short trip across the Midlands to St Andrews to spend the season. Speaking to BBCWM, Bowyer said he believes the deal is ‘very close’.
Lee Bowyer said: “We are hoping that will get done soon. It’s something that I think has been agreed but he is just coming back from an injury so we are just making sure everything is right on the medical side of things. I don’t think there’s any problems, it’s just a matter of time, another good addition to the squad.”
United’s head of recruitment Paul Mitchell has been tracking Sanderson for two years and was a big admirer. He had been identified as genuine competition and cover for Chris Basham, with the ability to also take over in that right central defensive role in the long term. United have other options they will now have to pursue as Slavisa Jokanovic looks to bolster his defence with new additions.
