Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has explained how competitive the United academy sides were, and that there was a positive rivalry between himself, Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford. Henderson, who had his breakthrough season at United in the 2020/21 campaign, emphasised that it was fantastic to grow up with those two players in particular, and that seeing them be successful first-team players motivated him to work harder.
Dean Henderson said: “Growing up with them, going to the same school as them, spending a lot of time with them as youngsters, it’s phenomenal to play with the likes of Marcus and Scotty. When Marcus scored on his debut against Midtjylland, that was a special moment. I celebrated with him in the crowd, but I wanted to be involved in that. That sort of hunger that you get and you drive for. You see that and it makes you want it even more; makes you believe that it can happen to you as well.”
Henderson claims that he knew both McTominay and Rashford would make top players and that the Scotsman in particular works harder than anyone he knows, both on the pitch and in the gym.
Dean Henderson said: “Scotty works harder than anyone I’ve ever known. Me and him were always so competitive. We were so competitive in the gym, who could bench press more, who could squat more and so on.”
He joked that he can squat nearly twice as much as McTominay, but still applauds him for his attitude, and he ultimately believes that their competitive spirit will help the club to win trophies in the future.
Dean Henderson added: “It took a lot of hard work to get this far and it still takes a lot of hard work every single day. We’re not there yet but we’ve just got to keep working hard and hopefully we can start bringing trophies to this football club.”
