Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- #RalphHasenhuttl says It would be a miracle to see #SamMcQueen play again #SAINTSFC

BOSS Ralph Hasenhuttl admits it would feel like a "miracle" if forgotten man Sam McQueen were to return to a football pitch. The 26-year-old has endured injury hell over the past three years, not playing a competitive game since suffering a serious knee injury during a loan spell with Middlesbrough in October 2018. Having ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament, screws inserted during surgery to help repair the problem became infected, providing a huge setback to the former England under-21 international. Most expected the Saints academy graduate to be among the list of players released by the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer, but his name was not included. Reports suggest Saints are happy to allow McQueen to continue to use the club's facilities to aid in his recovery before they decide on next steps for the Southampton-born ace, who has been with the St Mary's side for close to two decades. Having come up through the youth ranks, McQueen has played 29 first-team matches for Saints in the Premier League, domestic cups and Europa League. Whether he will add to that tally is still unclear, but the left-back was spotted with Saints' first-team squad this week, pictured cycling in the New Forest with the group as part of their pre-season preparations. Discussing McQueen's lengthy recovery, Hasenhuttl said: "His knee is good. He had some other problems, it’s a very long story to be honest. "I’ve never had a situation where I was coming to a club and never see a player playing for two-and-a-half years now. "Since I’m here I’ve never seen him on the pitch. But when you know the infection in his knee and how things were going on then it's even now like a wonder that he’s still able to play football or will be maybe one time able to play football again. "And finally, we don’t know if he will ever return back to the pitch but if (he does) then it's a miracle." Hasenhuttl will later this month take his squad to Wales for a five-day training camp, incorporating friendly matches against Championship duo Cardiff City and Swansea City.
Kayne Ramsay

#PLStories- Saints loanee #KayneRamsay impressing in Crewe pre-season #SAINTSFC

ON-LOAN Saints youngster Kayne Ramsay has made a great start to temporary life at Crewe Alexandra during tough pre-season but admits “every day after training I’ve had a sleep!” The 20-year-old right-back has already featured in a couple of pre-season games for the Railwaymen and caught the eye with an impressive assist at Ashton United on Wednesday. The former Chelsea youngster has already had his first-team breakthrough with Premier League action against both Manchester clubs, but will spend the year developing with the League One side. Ramsay will have his first opportunity to play in front of his new club’s home fans on Saturday when they welcome top division side Wolves to Gresty Road. Ahead of the match, he told the club website: “I have spoken to the gaffer and what he wants from me. He wants me to get forward when I can and run in behind and make sure my man doesn’t get in behind me at the other end. It is always good to play in front of supporters and have that noise. I am really looking forward to and it took a bit of time to get used to playing without them. “You always prefer that noise and encouragement when you play.” The London-born athletic full-back was given his first minutes in a Crewe shirt during a pre-season match against Nantwich United, playing 45’ as they ran out comfortable 4-1 winners, immediately impressing with his physicality. Crewe Alexandra kick their League One season off with a match at home to newly promoted Cheltenham Town on August 7, before travelling to National League play-off winners Hartlepool in the EFL Cup on the Tuesday. However, Saints fans will be interested to see how Ramsay gets on in Crewe’s first away fixture – a trip to Fratton Park to face Portsmouth on August 14. With the season getting underway in around three weeks, pre-season has been stepping into gear for EFL clubs, with Ramsay insisting it’s been gruelling but enjoyable. The dressing room is good and everyone has been welcoming. Everyone is together and everyone gets on well, it has been a good experience. “The pre-season has been tough but I need it for my legs for the remainder of the season. I am getting used to it but every day after training I’ve had a shower and had a sleep! “I wanted to come here at the beginning of pre-season and test myself. I didn’t want to come in the middle or at the end and be behind some of the others. I wanted to come out on a season-long loan and get my head down. “I have not seen my family so obviously I miss them, but hopefully they will be able to come up and watch a game soon.”
Dean Cox brighton

#PLStories- #DeanCox is excited to join Worthing but admits it was a tough decision to leave Eastbourne Borough #BHAFC

Former Brighton winger Dean Cox is excited to be joining Worthing after turning down a new contract at fellow Sussex side, Eastbourne Borough. The 33-year-old signed for the Rebels on Monday night after leaving Borough by mutual consent at the start of the month. But Cox spoke about the move came about and how his former Albion teammate and Worthing boss Adam Hinshelwood (pictured) played a key role in him joining. He told The Argus: “I was offered a new contract at Eastbourne but I felt that I wanted something different. “So Hinch (Adam Hinshelwood) got in touch and we spoke, obviously we have played together before so we know each other well. “Worthing did fantastically last season and obviously with Covid they were not able to finish their season, but they were doing well. “The main reason for joining was Adam. He is a top coach and he was a top player as well. “He said about coming in and using my experience to help the younger players, which was something that really appealed to me.” Cox had spent three years at Borough prior to leaving and in that time made nearly 100 appearances. But with Cox having formed a great relationship with everyone at the club, including manager Danny Bloor, he admitted that made his decision to leave even tougher. He said: “Danny is a good friend and they (Eastbourne Borough) are a fantastic football club. “I got on really with the board, the directors, everyone there, so, that made it even harder because of the friendship I had with Danny. First and foremost he is a great person and a great manager. So, I am fond of everyone down there, it was difficult to leave but I have done so and I am looking forward to a new project.” The Rebels were top of the PitchingIn Isthmian Premier in the last two seasons and on course for promotion to the National League South. However, both of those campaigns were curtailed due to Covid. But Cox is hoping he can help Worthing to get promoted this season. He said: “I hope we can get promoted but every club in the division will be saying the same thing, everyone is going to want to win the league and get promoted, obviously last season got curtailed. “So, it is all about getting that consistency again and once we get going again, hopefully we can do well. “But a lot of teams have strengthened over the summer, so it is going to be an even tougher league this season than I believe it was last year. “So that is the outset, we want to do as well as we can and if we could get promoted that would be fantastic for the football club.” It is not just on the pitch that Worthing are making strides. Off the field they have been busy laying a new pitch and installing new floodlights at The Crucial Environmental Stadium. Prior to the pandemic, Worthing were getting crowds of over a thousand at home games. They also handed Hinshelwood a new-three-year contract in February and Cox believes everything is in place for them to make the step up to the next level. He said: “Everything is geared for it to go to the next level, with the stadium, a new pitch being laid, they have new floodlights, the facilities are fantastic. “Also with Hinch signing a three-year contract, knowing Hinch he is not going to want to have any success and he will work as hard as he can to get it. “So it is all ready and geared to go, obviously they get fantastic crowds, they get over a 1,000 a week at league games. “But it is a fantastic club and if we could have some success, I am sure the fanbase would grow even more and the club would be able to grow even more. “It is little steps but it is certainly geared this season to have a good campaign, but the pressure is for the players to perform, try and get up there and if we can get promoted that would top off a great season. “But like I said with the facilities and everything it is geared to kick on.” Worthing have a young side, but the winger is hoping he can use his experience and nous to help them see out difficult matches. He said: “It is exciting, they are a young group with some fantastic footballers in there. “You don’t get to the top of the league twice before they were curtailed for no reason. “It is certainly a really good group and having some older players, more experienced players like myself, and a few others to help them and nurture them through some difficult times and difficult games will help. “In certain games, we will be fine. However in others, we will need to have a bit of nous or man-management, a bit of experience of seeing games out and that is what I am hoping I can bring to the team. “But it is a fantastic group of players and like I said the project is to get promoted, but it is easier said than done. “We are working hard in pre-season and hopefully come the 14th of August, we are ready to go.” Cox made his debut on Tuesday night, coming on in the 25th minute to replace Reece Meekums in their 6-1 win over Three Bridges in a friendly at The Crucial Environmental Stadium, where 457 fans got to see him in action.
Gao Jisheng Southampton Owner

#PLStories- Portsmouth boss #DannyCowley ’embraces’ Saints rivalry #SAINTSFC #PORTSMOUTHFC

PORTSMOUTH boss Danny Cowley admits his side must get "closer" to Saints in the league pyramid to enhance the rivalry between the two clubs. Cowley took charge at Pompey in March, but was unable to guide them to promotion out of League One, narrowly missing out on a play-off spot. It means the Hampshire club will once again compete two divisions below Saints this season. The south coast rivals last competed in the same league during the 2011-12 Championship campaign. They have only met once since, with Saints romping to a 4-0 triumph at Fratton Park in September 2019 in the EFL Cup. "I like rivalry. I think it's a good thing, it drives the standards," Cowley told the Portsmouth News. "I think, for us, we are proud of this club and our island. "The people of Portsmouth are focused enough on our club doing well and that's what they want." During pre-season, former Saints midfielder Jake Hesketh has been on trial with Pompey, featuring in two of their friendlies. Discussing the possibility of upsetting some supporters by signing a former Saints academy graduate to a permanent contract, Cowley added: "They (the fans) want us to do well and what we have to do is make some intelligent decisions. "What I will always remember is this football club is the people's club and will never make decisions that will upset them. Ultimately, they are what this club stands for. "We know about the rivalry, we respect the rivalry - I actually embrace the rivalry. "What we need to do is get closer to them in the division so we can make it a more competitive one." Portsmouth have also been linked with a move for Josh Sims, who left Saints this summer.

Brighton's summer signing Enock Mwepu has insisted he is ready to cope with the intensity of playing in the Premier League. The 23-year-old midfielder joined the Seagulls last week from Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg. He has been used to intense matches previously when playing for Salzburg in the Champions League. Joel Veltman, who joined Albion last summer, compared the ferocity of the Prem to playing in the Champions League every week. Read more: Joel Veltman believes the intensity of the Premier League is like playing in the 'Champions League every week' But the Zambian international admits he is looking forward to that intensity week-in-week out in the Prem. Speaking the club’s website in his first interview since signing, he said: “That is something I am looking forward to. “I have watched the Premier League quite a lot of times, so I know that week-in-week-out it is so intense, so I am looking forward to that. “For me the Champions League you play one game and the intensity is really high, but here it is like that week-in-week-out from the start of the season to the end. “So, I just want to get fit, get ready in the pre-season and when we start the league for sure I am looking forward to that intensity and will be good to go.” Mwepu also revealed that he already feels at home with the Seagulls after receiving a warm welcome from everyone at the club. He said: “It feels like home already, my teammates have already welcomed me very well and the coaches have welcomed me as well, so I really feel at home already. So I am really happy about it.” He added: “I am trying to remember all the names but Danny (Welbeck), Percy (Tau) and the Lewis (Dunk) the skipper. “They are already trying to have a laugh and a joke with me. “The other day I forgot my shoes because I was going out the training centre and they were like the computer has to do everything at once. So I said sorry its need an upgrade.”

The 22-year-old has made 16 first team appearances at Saints and scored in the 2-0 FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury in January, although he’s yet to register a league goal. He will now have a season to test himself at League One level, with a side who only narrowly missed out on promotion last campaign. Imps manager Michael Appleton revealed yesterday that he is to undergo surgery for testicular cancer, and will take a leave of absence as the club rallies around and wishes him well. Matt Clarke

#PLStories- Brighton’s #MattClarke joins West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan #WBAFC #BHAFC

Brighton defender Matt Clarke has joined recently relegated Championship side, West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan. The 24-year-old joined the Seagulls in the summer of 2019 on a four-year deal from League One side Portsmouth as one of Graham Potter’s first signings at the club but has yet to make an appearance. It will be the third consecutive season that the centre-back has spent on loan in the Championship having spent the previous two campaigns at Derby. In his two seasons at Pride Park, he made 81 appearances and scored one goal. Albion’s pathway development manager David Weir said: “Matt has done very well in his time with Derby, and shown he is very adept at Championship level and there was no shortage of clubs interested in taking him on loan. “Having just come down from the Premier League, West Bromwich Albion will be pushing for an instant return to the top level, and Matt will no doubt go there with that aim. "We will be monitoring his progress and wish him well for the new season ahead.” Clarke will be looking to help the Baggies win promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking under new manager Valerien Ismael. The French-German head coach guided Barnsley to a fifth-place finish in the Championship last season, before losing to Swansea in the play-off semi-finals. Clarke becomes the West Brom head coach’s third summer signing, after he secured the services of his captain at Barnsley, Alex Mowatt on a free transfer and highly rated midfielder Quevin Moises Castro on a free transfer, after he previously been on trial with Chelsea and Arsenal.
