#PLStories- Graham Potter says Life at Chelsea is easy thanks to high quality #CHELSEAFC

Former Brighton boss Graham Potter says life at Chelsea is made easy when his players can score high quality goals. Stunning efforts from Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz sealed a 2-1 win in at RB Salzburg in their Champions League group encounter in testing conditions and booked a last-16 spot. Croatian midfielder Kovacic found the top corner with a first-time effort in the first half and after Junior Adamu had levelled for the Austrians, German attacker Havertz won the game in fine style by curling a sublime shot in off the post. "It is amazing, top corner, it makes my job a lot easier when they can do that," Potter told BT Sport, ahead of his returning to Brighton with his new club for a Premier League fixture this weekend. "Great for Kai, I'm really pleased, he has been fighting and trying his best, so to score that and help us win, fantastic." The goals were worthy of the win and Potter was pleased to see his side stop a 40-game unbeaten home record for Salzburg. "I am delighted. It was a fantastic performance, I thought the players showed real courage here because the atmosphere, they are so intense," he added. "We were under pressure but I thought we controlled it well, we attacked well, created some chances. I was a bit disappointed to be only 1-0 half-time - one action from them, which can happen at this level - but we responded really well and a great goal from Kai and overall we deserved it. "It was hard work but it is going to be at this level, that is how it is, away from home in the Champions League is so complicated, with the crowd and their team and the quality they have. Overall we played well, delighted for the players. They were fantastic." Kovacic did leave the game early after suffering a calf issue, but Potter added: "He is feeling his calf a little bit, it is a heavy pitch. "He was feeling a little bit of tightness, hopefully it's not too bad. It is just how it is at this point of the season." Chelsea are unbeaten in nine games in all competitions under Potter, with six wins and three draws, and will arrive at the Amex at the weekend sitting in fifth place, six points above ninth-placed Albion.

#PLStories- Coach Bruno’s message to Brighton fans after Chelsea move #BHAFC #CHELSEAFC

‘Heartbroken’ Bruno has compared his shock move away Albion to leaving home as a teenager. The former Seagulls skipper and coach has posted a message on social media to say farewell as he heads to Chelsea. He compares the decision to move to Stamford Bridge to that he took when he left his small home town in Catalonia to join the Espanyol academy in Barcelona. His message was printed against a backdrop provided by a photo taken by Simon Dack during the lap of appreciation which followed Albion’s 3-2 win over Manchester City at the end of the 2020-21 season. Bruno writes: “I don’t know where to start, I don’t know what to say. “I’m heartbroken, probably like some of you. I have the same feeling that when I left home at 14 to chase my dream. Sure about my decision but broken inside. “What YOU; players, staff at the Amex, staff at the training ground, FANs and Community have given me it’s unforgettable. THANK YOU. “What these 10 years has shown me it’s that truly Football it’s more than 90 minutes. Of all the unimportant things, Football it’s the most important. “I’ve given my heart and soul for this Club and I would like to think that I have helped to leave Brighton and Hove Albion in a better place when I arrived. “There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are you will always be in my heart. “Your amigo. “Bruno.”

#PLStories- Chelsea boss Graham Potter sends open letter to Brighton fans #BHAFC #ChelseaFC

Graham Potter says his three years at Albion changed his life – but accepts his sudden departure might be hard to forgive for some fans. An open letter from the former head coach has been published on Albion’s website. [embedded content] It was completed on Thursday evening, after the announcement of the Queen’s death. However, it was felt inappropriate to release the statement on Friday or Saturday. Potter says Albion have a great owner and fans, talks about some of the highlights – including the 5-2 win over Leicester last Sunday, which turned out to be his final game in charge. He said it was a poignant moment for himself and colleagues as they left the club. Potter, Billy Reid, Bjorn Hamberg, Kyle Macaulay, Bruno and Ben Roberts visited the training complex in Lancing on Thursday morning to say goodbye and it is understood to have been an emotional occasion. He speaks about the “unexpected whirlwind” which hit last week as Chelsea came in for him and he hopes fans understand the professional decision he took to move on. Potter refers to the club as “the Albion”, as many fans do. In his open letter, he writes: “This has been three wonderful years with a club that has changed my life, and I want to take a moment to say goodbye to all of you who have made it such a special period of my career. “I bid farewell to a great club and one that will always mean so much to me and my family. For some I recognise that the change that comes so suddenly in football can be hard to accept. I may not be able to persuade you all to forgive my departure – but I would at least like to take the chance to say thank you.” “All good clubs need great owners and great fans. Brighton & Hove Albion have both. I will cherish the relationships I built in all aspects of the club. My players went above and beyond. My staff gave everything. At the heart of it were the Albion fans. On every matchday at the Amex, the connection with the team was strong. When we played away you came in your thousands to roar us on. I know what you have been through to see your club finally in a modern stadium and thriving in the Premier League. I felt it every time I stood on the touchline. “To those of you who stopped to chat when I was in the city or further afield – and the many who wrote to me – all those connections meant a great deal. Your personal stories of following the club – of parents and grandparents who were fans – helped me to understand what makes Albion special. “I hope that you will understand that at this stage of my career, I felt I had to grasp a new opportunity. “I would like to thank Tony Bloom, Paul Barber and the directors for the opportunity they gave me three years ago and then the unswerving support that came with it. My gratitude also to Dan Ashworth and David Weir, two first-class technical directors. To the staff at both the stadium and the training ground: all of you have impressed me with the pride you have taken in your work. You supported the club and you also supported me through some tough times in my personal life. “Brighton & Hove Albion is a club full of good people who work together in the right way to accomplish things. “We have shared some brilliant moments. The 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in my first season stands out. So too, the 2-1 win over Arsenal after lockdown. It was an amazing afternoon, especially given what many had gone through in the preceding months. My only wish was that our supporters had been there to enjoy that with us. “When the stadiums were partially-opened we experienced an incredible atmosphere for the 3-2 win over Manchester City in the final home game of the 2020/21 season. I know many of you enjoyed the 4-0 win over Manchester United last season. We finished that season with a 3-1 win over West Ham on the final day to seal a record points tally for the club and a highest-ever league position. These are great memories. “The Albion has given me that and more. I feel I am a better person and a better manager for the experiences I have had here. Not every team selection or decision has been perfect. But the club has created an environment that gives you the scope to make mistakes, learn from them and then improve. I have always tried to act with integrity and be a good person. These are values I hold dear, and I know that the Albion do too.  “What turned out to be my final match against Leicester City last Sunday was a good way to end. I did not know at the time that it would be the end, but looking back now we played so well. There was so much positivity around the club. The last few days have been an unexpected whirlwind. Leaving the training ground for the last time was a poignant moment. Not only for me, but also for Billy, Bjorn, Kyle, Bruno and Ben. “Albion fans know that with Tony, Paul and David the club is in safe hands. To my successor, whoever that may be, I would say, congratulations. You’ll be working for a great club with a fantastic squad, supported by a great chairman and board. The squad are playing at a high level and will get better. Most of all, the supporters will get behind the team home and away. “To everyone at Brighton & Hove Albion: thank you. It has been a pleasure and honour to serve the club over the last three years. I wish you every success going forward.” The letter was signed simply: Graham

#PLStories – Thomas Frank reveals not leaving Brentford mid season like Graham Potter #ChelseaFC #BHAFC #BrentfordFC

THOMAS Frank insists it would require “something crazy special” to tempt him away from Brentford amid links with the vacant Brighton job. The Dane arrived in English football as a relatively unknown quantity but his reputation has rocketed after he ended the Bees’ 74-year top-flight exile in 2021 before making a mark on the Premier League. Divisional rivals Brighton are seeking a new head coach following Graham Potter’s departure to replace the sacked Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea. Brentford boss Frank is among a host of potential candidates connected with the Seagulls but, while discussing Potter’s move to Stamford Bridge, suggested he would not be interested in that particular post. “Looking from the outside – because I can’t know what Graham was thinking and I might think differently – it’s balancing doing a top job as he was at Brighton and then your ambitions,” said the 48-year-old Frank. “He had the chance to walk into one of the biggest clubs and see if he could create his magic there too, which I am convinced he will do. “A lot of it in that situation depends on the club who is approaching you. When it is a club of that magnitude and size, then maybe there is a chance to create something. “I wouldn’t even say it is necessarily more special than what he did at Brighton, because what he created there was very special. “But perhaps more to match yourself against the best in the world year after year, not trying to get a mid-table position. “Trying to win the Premier League and win the Champions League, I guess that’s the challenge. “I am in a position here where I am very happy at Brentford. I am focusing on that every single day. “So for me it would need to be something crazy special. Football is football, but the one thing for sure is that I am very happy.”

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl ‘congratulates’ Chelsea on Graham Potter manager decision #SAINTSFC #ChelseaFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl has congratulated Chelsea on “a very good choice” with expected new manager Graham Potter, after close acquaintance Thomas Tuchel was sacked. The Austrian admitted the Blues’ decision is another reminder of the brutal nature of management at the top level. Tuchel had been relieved of his duties just six matches into the Premier League season, and was not even the first to go after AFC Bournemouth’s Scott Parker decision. However, Hasenhuttl was full of praise for Potter – who has been in charge of Brighton & Hove Albion since 2019. “In football, things sometimes change very quickly. What everybody has seen is what a fantastic manager Tuchel is and what a job he has done there,” Hasenhuttl said. “I can remember him coming in and immediately he had a big impact with his group. He changed immediately the whole behaviour of the club, playing good football and winning the Champions League. “Then if somebody else decides you get more out of this group than you do, then change is happening in this business. “We all know this when we sign a contract somewhere, you know in some moments the next one is right out your door waiting for your job.” On the impending incoming of Potter, Hasenhuttl added: “I must congratulate them on a very good choice, he is for me the manager in the past two seasons that has had the biggest impact on a club. “With all the limits they have and the transfers they gave away to other clubs, to still compete on the highest level shows how good this group was. “I know Pascal Gross who plays there and we speak often about the development of this club, he does a good job and has all the knowledge to step into a top club.” He added: “It is a clear signal that there are also good English managers out there, and he was also working in foreign countries to get experience. He was looking for other options to learn and develop his knowledge, and this is a very good way of doing it.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. Thomas Tuchel

#PLStories- Chelsea’s Tuchel reserves special praise for Hasenhuttl and admits N’Golo Kante’s injury record #CHELSEAFC #SaintsFC

CHELSEA manager Thomas Tuchel insisted “I have a lot of respect” for Ralph Hasenhuttl, stating Saints teams have “his fingerprints are all over” them. The German boss faced Hasenhuttl three times alone last season with an EFL Cup tie in October, the Blues eventually running out winners in all three meetings. As did Hasenhuttl, Tuchel arrived in the Premier League from the Bundesliga – where he was the boss of giants Borussia Dortmund. Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s visit to St Mary’s, Champions League-winner Tuchel reserved some kind words for his Saints counterpart. "I have a lot of respect for Ralph, and we have played against each other a lot of times,” Tuchel said. “He is a very nice person and a very good coach, and his fingerprints are all over this Southampton team every year. "He will be very friendly before the match, but during the match, he will not be friendly with us. “Don't make the mistake, he is a competitor as we are. We will fight it out but always with fair play. It will be better to be on the sideline than in the stands." Tuchel had been serving a touchline ban after he was sent off during the recent ‘Battle of the Bridge’ – the fiery meeting with Tottenham Hotspur. In the meantime, he has been taking in the performances of Saints as part of his preparations. "I had the chance to watch the game of Southampton (against Manchester United) live and saw a very strong side,” Tuchel added. “They had a huge turnaround at Leicester to win the game, and you could see they gained a lot of confidence from it. “They conceded, but they had a lot of touches in the box, a lot of shots against Manchester United and were very mobile upfront. "What you can always expect in Southampton is a physical game, a running game, a high-intensity game. This is what it is. We need to recover well and be well prepared to repeat what we did last season." A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo.
