Chelsea’s Alejandro Garnacho took to social media to express his pride in the team’s performance following their 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. The match saw Chelsea reduced to ten men for 52 minutes after Moises Caicedo received a red card for a high tackle on Declan Rice, a decision made after a VAR intervention.
Enzo Maresca said: “I just said there, he asked me about Moises’ red card. It’s a red card, but why was Bentancur’s against Reece not a red card when we were at Spurs away? So us, as a manager, we struggle to understand why they judge in different way. Moises’ is red card, yes. Bentancur’s is a red card, yes. Why they don’t give him a red card? It’s just that, that we struggle to understand. The reality is that it’s red card. But why they judge in different way? And the Trevoh one, I asked the referee, he said to me that it was not an elbow.”
Despite the setback, Chelsea took the lead through Trevoh Chalobah in the 48th minute, only for Arsenal to equalize through Mikel Merino just before the hour mark. Garnacho, who was substituted in at half-time, praised his team’s resilience and determination to hold on for a draw under challenging circumstances.
Chelsea manager Maresca also expressed satisfaction with his team’s response after being reduced to ten men. However, he questioned the consistency of refereeing decisions, particularly regarding an incident involving Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie, who appeared to elbow Chalobah.
The VAR decision to upgrade Caicedo’s yellow card to a red was explained by the Premier League Match Centre. The referee, Anthony Taylor, stated that Caicedo’s challenge was made with excessive force and endangered the safety of the opponent, leading to the final decision of a red card.
The draw leaves Chelsea reflecting on a spirited performance against a strong Arsenal side, with Garnacho and his teammates showing commendable resilience in the face of adversity.
