Chelsea staged a sensational comeback against West Ham, overturning a 2-0 deficit at halftime to secure a dramatic victory. Liam Rosenior’s side initially faced boos from the crowd as West Ham surged ahead in the first half. However, strategic changes at halftime transformed Chelsea’s performance, with substitutes playing pivotal roles in the turnaround.
Marc Cucurella said: “We work for moments like this. We showed the mentality of the team. We went 2-0 down at half-time and there were doubts and probably not too many people believed in us. Sometimes when you are losing you lose confidence but in both games we stayed in the game, we did things right and we have a lot of quality. If we stick together and we fight together, these things can happen.”
Cucurella added: “At the end we are a team and the most important thing is winning the game. It was difficult. West Ham played a really good first half as well, so we have to give credit to them. All together we want the same end to the game, which is to get the three points and we are really happy. After being 2-0 down at half-time we showed our mentality to play a really good second half. We stick together in tough moments and we deserved this win.”
Chelsea’s comeback was sparked by the introduction of Wesley Fofana, who assisted Joao Pedro for the first goal. Marc Cucurella then leveled the score with a header after the ball rebounded off the crossbar. In stoppage time, Joao Pedro set up Enzo Fernandez to complete the comeback, marking Chelsea’s first Premier League win from a two-goal halftime deficit.
The turnaround was particularly notable given the changes made at halftime, with Jorrel Hato, Alejandro Garnacho, and Benoit Badiashile being substituted. Jamie Gittens also left the field due to injury, replaced by Pedro Neto. These adjustments proved crucial as Chelsea’s performance level dramatically improved in the second half.
The victory not only highlighted Chelsea’s resilience but also underscored the depth and quality within the squad. The ability to adapt and overcome adversity will be vital as Chelsea aims to build momentum in the Premier League.
