Leeds United managed to halt their losing streak at Stamford Bridge with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Chelsea. The result marked the end of a seven-game losing run at the iconic stadium and edged Leeds a point closer to Premier League safety. However, the match was not without its controversies, as Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior expressed his frustration over a contentious goal allowed to stand despite a potential handball incident.
Liam Rosenior said: “The lad handballs it. It affects my players in that moment. They think it’s a handball, they switch off, we don’t clear the ball and they score. Then for 25 minutes it was wave after wave of attack. We have to make sure we take care of moments and be professional.”
Dermot Gallagher said: “Not really. If you look, it strikes him, there’s no doubt about that. Is it deliberate? No I don’t think so. Does it lead directly to a goal for him? Definitely, no! If you watch the sequence, three Chelsea players touch the ball in-between. It eventually goes in way after that incident. So it doesn’t fall into that criteria.”
Despite Rosenior’s protests, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher defended the decision, stating that the handball was not deliberate and did not directly lead to the goal. Gallagher highlighted that several Chelsea players interacted with the ball before Noah Okafor’s goal, which ultimately led to the equalizer.
Leeds United’s manager, Daniel Farke, expressed immense pride in his team’s resilience, especially given the absence of key players like Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Pascal Struijk, and Anton Stach. The draw was a testament to Leeds’ “never-say-die” attitude, as they clawed back from a 2-0 deficit against a Chelsea side in formidable form.
The match also saw Leeds’ Bogle inadvertently handling the ball, which went unnoticed by the officials on the field and in the VAR studio. Despite the uproar from Chelsea fans and management, the goal stood, allowing Leeds to capitalize and secure a crucial point.
This draw not only ended Leeds’ losing streak at Stamford Bridge but also served as a morale booster for Farke’s squad as they continue their fight against relegation. With Chelsea’s strong performances in both the Premier League and Champions League, Leeds’ ability to salvage a point in such challenging circumstances speaks volumes about their determination and fighting spirit.
