Leeds United delivered a stunning performance on Wednesday night, defeating Chelsea 3-1 at Elland Road. The victory was a testament to Leeds’ dominance, as they outplayed the Blues in every aspect of the game. The win not only marked a significant triumph for Daniel Farke’s side but also ended Chelsea’s eight-match unbeaten streak, causing them to lose ground at the top of the Premier League table.
Enzo Maresca said: “Probably it’s the only good news of the night. I’m happy for him, he’s back, now he needs to build a little bit the physical condition and he will be important for us, for sure. He’s getting better, but he needs to play minutes.”
Maresca admitted: “I think they were better than us in all aspects, they deserved to win the game. There is nothing that we can take from this game. The only thing we can do is try to understand the mistake we have done, try to reset, because in 48 hours we have one more game.”
He added: “When you play the last two games against Barcelona and Arsenal, you expect a better performance, no doubt. But for many reasons, it’s not going to be possible for every game again, because we change players, because we have players that we said many times it’s not possible to play every two, three days. When you change players, also the level drops, that is the reality, because they are important players for us. Moises, Reece (James), with these kind of players, we cannot use them every game. It’s impossible, because otherwise they can get injury again and be out for months.”
Leeds United set the tone early in the match with a commanding first-half performance. Jaka Bijol opened the scoring with a powerful header, followed by a thumping effort from Ao Tanaka, giving Leeds a 2-0 lead at halftime. Chelsea attempted a comeback, with Pedro Neto pulling one back, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s tap-in sealed the victory for Leeds. Despite the loss, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca found solace in the return of Cole Palmer, who made his first appearance since late September due to groin and toe injuries.
The match highlighted Leeds United’s tactical superiority and ability to capitalize on Chelsea’s squad rotation, as Maresca mentioned the challenges of maintaining performance levels with frequent player changes. Leeds’ victory not only showcased their potential but also served as a reminder of the competitive nature of the Premier League.
