Chelsea clinched a dramatic victory against Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, securing their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The Blues initially took the lead through Enzo Fernandez’s penalty, but the match quickly turned into a rollercoaster. Antonio Vergara equalized for Napoli, and Rasmus Højlund put the Italian side ahead. However, Joao Pedro became the hero for Chelsea, leveling the score and then sealing the win with a late goal. Chelsea’s performance in the league phase saw them finish in sixth place, setting up a potential last-16 clash against Monaco, Qarabag, PSG, or Newcastle.
Liam Rosenior said: “Huge respect for him, firstly as a player, he was a magnificent footballer. He then went on to have an incredible and still has an incredible career as a coach. I think his passion as a player transmits to the passion in his teams and obviously when I was younger watching Chelsea play in the manner that they did, defensively so strong.”
Rosenior added: “This is a very strong team. I think it would have been unfortunate in the recent games that they played. We know it’s going to be a very difficult game in a very special atmosphere. It doesn’t change my plans at all because I’ve been planning for a very difficult game. In football, in the Champions League, in Serie A, in the Premier League, you can never expect anything. Napoli are a great team. They proved that last year with a fantastic title. When they have outstanding individual players, they have a world-class coach. They’re still in the position where they can get through. We’re aware of that. I think it will make for an exciting game because Napoli have to win. Also, for us to have a realistic chance of the top eight, we also need to win.”
Chelsea’s victory in Naples highlighted their resilience and strategic prowess. Joao Pedro’s performance was particularly noteworthy, as his two goals were instrumental in overturning the deficit and ensuring Chelsea’s progression. The Blues now await the draw for the knockout phase play-off, which will take place in Nyon, Switzerland. The two-legged tie is scheduled for February, with the winners advancing to the last 16 draw later that month. Chelsea’s potential opponents in the next round include some formidable teams, promising an exciting continuation of their Champions League journey.
