#PLStories- #ChristianEriksen issues statement following collapse at Euro 2020 #THFC

Christian Eriksen has issued a short statement on his condition after suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 fixture against Finland. The midfielder dropped to the ground at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen shortly before half-time, leaving players from both teams in clear distress. Cameras showed medics desperately trying to stabilise the former Tottenham player, as his teammates formed a protective circle around where he lay on the pitch. As he was being treated on the pitch during the televised game, Eriksen's team-mates formed a wall in efforts to protect the Inter Milan midfielder’s privacy. On Sunday night, Denmark’s team doctor Morten Boesen has confirmed Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and that “he was gone” prior to being resuscitated. At a press conference arranged by the Danish Football Federation on Sunday afternoon, Boesen said: “He was gone. We did cardiac resuscitation, it was a cardiac arrest. “How close were we to losing him? I don’t know, but we got him back after one defib, so that’s quite fast. “We don’t have any explanation why it happened. The details about what happened I am not quite sure of because I am not a cardiologist, I will leave that to the experts. I didn’t see it live, only on screens afterwards.” In his first public message since being taken ill, Eriksen says he "feels better" in a short statement released through his representatives to the Italian media. It read: "Thank you, I won't give up. I feel better now - but I want to understand what's happened. I want to say thank you all for what you did for me." Denmark players formed a ring around their teammate (Friedemann Vogel/AP) Meanwhile, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has criticised the BBC for continuing to broadcast as Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen received emergency treatment on the pitch. The BBC has apologised following complaints, and said the footage is controlled by Uefa. Speaking on LBC, Labour leader Sir Keir said: “I watched this live and it was awful.” He continued: “There are those rare occasions where you know it’s serious from the start – the players’ expressions who are on the pitch, the fans’ expression – it becomes very sombre very, very quickly. “I really feared the worst. I thought I was watching something no football fan ever, ever wants to watch. “I thought they could have cut away sooner and I think his partner came onto the pitch at one point and I don’t know why they had the cameras on her at all.”

#PLStories- Burnley footballer #AshleyBarnes fined and banned after drink drive charge #BURNLEYFC

BURNLEY footballer Ashley Barnes has been ordered to pay a £13,000 fine and banned from driving for 12-months, after admitting to drink driving. The Premier League striker was pulled over by police near his Wilmslow home on May 11, having been out celebrating the Clarets' top-flight survival in a victory against Fulham. Barnes, 31, was stopped at 3am on Balmoral Way while driving a black £55,000 Mercedes-Benz V-Class. The footballer pleaded guilty to the charge at Stockport Magistrates Court and was offered the chance to reduce his ban by 12 weeks by taking a drink driving awareness course. At the time of his arrest, Burnley Football Club released the following statement: "Burnley Football Club is aware of a police incident involving one of its players, Ashley Barnes. "As a club with solid values and a strong community ethos, Burnley FC upholds and expects the highest standards of responsible behaviour from all its players and staff. #PLStories- Southampton send well wishes as football world unites around #ChristianEriksen #SAINTSFC

SAINTS sent their well wishes to Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen, who was awake and in a stable condition on Saturday night after collapsing during a Euro 2020 match with Finland. Parken Stadium fell silent soon before half-time when the former Tottenham playmaker dropped to the ground when running to collect a throw-in. English referee Anthony Taylor immediately called medics on to the pitch and Eriksen underwent prolonged treatment, with compressions performed on his chest before he was taken to hospital. It was later confirmed the Inter Milan player was stable. His team-mates continued their fixture in Copenhagen, with Finland claiming a 1-0 win thanks to Joel Pohjanpalo’s 59th-minute goal. “Christian Eriksen is awake and his condition remains stable. He remains hospitalised at Rigshospitalet for further examinations,” a statement from the Danish Football Association read. A statement on Saints’ website read: “Everyone at Southampton Football Club will continue to keep Eriksen and his family firmly in their thoughts and prayers.” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: “Moments like this put everything in life into perspective. I wish Christian a full and speedy recovery and pray his family has strength and faith. “At these times, the unity of the football family is so strong and he and his family carry with them the good wishes and prayers of everyone. “I heard of fans of both teams chanting his name. Football is beautiful and Christian plays it beautifully.” Saints defender Jannik Vestergaard played the final 27 minutes of the Group B contest, in which former St Mary’s skipper Pierre-Emile Højbjerg missed a penalty in the second half for the Danes.
Che Adams

#PLStories- #RalphHasenhuttl says #CheAdams has the quality to compete in the Euros #SAINTSFC

BOSS Ralph Hasenhuttl backed Che Adams to thrive on the international stage for Scotland and insisted: “He has the quality to compete in the Euros.” The Saints striker begins the biggest tournament of his life tomorrow, when Steve Clarke’s side play Czech Republic in their Group D opener at Hampden Park (2pm). Adams, 24, represented England at under-20 level before opting to play for the Scots earlier this year – qualifying through a maternal grandparent. He has already scored two goals for the Tartan Army in four internationals. And Hasenhuttl, who himself led the line for his native Austria at international level, believes Adams has what it takes to handle the big occasion. Asked what it was like to play up front for your country, the Saints boss told the Daily Echo: “The spot is on you. That is a fact. “If you are performing well, you’re the hero. If not, then it’s tough I think. This is when you play for your country – the whole nation is looking on you. “But I think he can handle this and he has the quality to compete in the Euros. I wish him all the best when he’s part of them. “I am sure that he will score his goals.” Leicester-born Adams has completed his second season at Saints, having signed from Birmingham in the summer of 2019. He has scored 13 goals in 77 games for Hasenhuttl’s side in all competitions, including nine in the Premier League last season. Quizzed on how Adams compared to the player and person who walked through the door almost two years ago, Hasenhuttl replied: “I think it was important for him to get the time to adapt to Premier League football because it’s a different level than Championship football. “I think especially in the first year he felt it was more difficult to score here – definitely – and he learned a lot in this time, I think. “But what I always liked was the way he worked for this team, the way he learned and the way he was fighting for his position in the team. It was not always easy. “But it was more and more coming to the situation that everybody sees his qualities and we are happy to have him here. “Also, the noise around that a lot of teams want to have a player like him shows us that we made a very good signing for us. “I think this season, he scored nine goals. He missed double figures but I think next season, when he scores the easy goals – and he had a lot of easy chances this season – then he can end up really in double figures. “We are very happy for him and for us.” Scotland, who also have Saints midfielder Stuart Armstrong in their squad, are set to take on England and Croatia in their other Group D contests.
Nathan Tella

#PLStories- #NathanTella reveals help provided by #TheoWalcott at Southampton #SaintsFC

The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season at Saints, featuring 22 times for the first team in all competitions. Former Arsenal youngster Tella made his senior Saints debut almost one year ago, coming off the bench in a 3-0 win at Norwich City during Project Restart at the end of the 2019-20 campaign. He kicked on during 2020-21, making eight starts, including seven in the Premier League. But it was an impact appearance off the bench which yielded his first goal, netting just two minutes after coming on last month to help Saints to a 3-1 win over Fulham at St Mary's. "It’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid," Tella told the Daily Echo. "I’ve seen players scoring in the Premier League and I’m thinking 'why can’t I be one of those?'. "Now that I’ve been able to put the ball in the back of the net and get off the mark, I hope that this is just the start of a goalscoring run in my career." After finding the net, Tella turned provider, teeing up another academy graduate in Theo Walcott, a player 11 years his senior. "As a player and a forward, the goal is not only just to score goals, but it’s to get assists," said Tella. "I’m so happy I was able to get an assist for Theo. "He’s helped me so much this season and I’m just delighted." Walcott spent last season on loan at Saints and has since signed a two-year contract to join the club as a free agent when his deal at Everton expires this month.
