A football finance expert has insisted Manchester City cannot be relegated from the Premier League even if they are found guilty of the most serious of their 115 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. However, Kieran Maguire admits that any points deduction levelled at the champions could be severe enough to make relegation inevitable anyway. The likes of Nottingham Forest have looked on with interest as City’s FFP saga has been played out over the past few months, the case being heard in London and now reported to have been concluded. That just leaves the long-awaited judgement to be made public – a decision that could have huge implications for teams like Forest, as they bid to qualify for Champions League football next season. But during a discussion on the Overlap Fan Debate podcast, Maguire explained that it was unlikely the Premier League would expel City and relegate them to the Championship as the English Football League is not obliged to accept them.
Kieran Maguire explained: “In the case of City, there’s actually three charges. It’s not 115. If that is the case, then that is fraud. That is about as serious as it gets. And, if found guilty of those charges, then the book will be thrown at Manchester City and it’s going to be a massive points deduction. “You can’t just relegate them because the Premier League and the EFL are independent bodies, so the EFL doesn’t have to accept them. That would relegate them.” Maguire was also sceptical about the potential success of an appeal, adding: “
I think there are very narrow grounds for appeal. No one will be able to see your personal information and you will only receive messages from the NottinghamshireLive Reds writers.
