Remembering Arne Slot links with Tottenham as Liverpool nears title win

Arne Slot Manager

Arne Slot’s debut season as Liverpool’s head coach saw him on the brink of joining an elite group of managers, as he appeared set to lead the Reds to the top of the English Premier League. This milestone came as Liverpool prepared to face Tottenham Hotspur, a club that once showed interest in Slot, in their upcoming clash. The Dutchman had previously led Feyenoord to an Eredivisie title, garnering attention from North London. However, Slot chose to remain with Feyenoord, quashing any rumors of a move.

Arne Slot said, “I have been hearing a lot of rumours going around about other interest in me. Although I am thankful, my wish is to stay at Feyenoord and continue working on what we created last year. There is not – and there has not been – transfer conversation and yesterday’s meeting was exclusively for an extension. All talks with the club have always been only in that sense.”

Liverpool and Tottenham had already faced each other three times this season, with Liverpool emerging victorious in two of those encounters, including a crucial Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg win. Meanwhile, Tottenham, under the management of Ange Postecoglou, faced increasing pressure as they languished in 16th place, potentially heading toward their worst Premier League season.

Slot’s decision to join Liverpool in the summer was initially met with skepticism, given the daunting task of succeeding a predecessor who had restored the club to global prominence and ended their Premier League title drought. Yet, Slot’s tenure began with promise, drawing parallels to the successful managerial transition between Liverpool legends Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

Arne Slot continued, “The problem is that the ones who know do not want to talk about it, and the ones who don’t know do want to talk about it. That sometimes happens in football. I’ve always preferred not to say anything about it. It might be true, it might not be true. I’ll leave it with what I said back then. I was really happy that I stayed at Feyenoord. That I can say.”

For Tottenham, the decision not to secure Slot’s services now seemed like a missed opportunity. Slot’s early success at Liverpool silenced critics, and his seamless integration into the club’s fabric suggested a bright future ahead.
