Southampton are currently assessing a fresh injury concern for their goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who is on loan at Standard Liege. The 23-year-old has missed the last two matches for the Belgian side, raising questions about his fitness. Bazunu had been a regular starter for Standard Liege, playing every minute of the first eight matches of the season, but his performances were under scrutiny after conceding 15 goals and securing only one win during that period.
A club spokesperson said: “I think there is some type of injury, but we’re hoping it’s not too serious. At this moment in time I wouldn’t have the details around that. Gav went out on loan and I think at the moment it’s a period of assessment about what that is. I don’t have the black and white definitive details.”
Bazunu’s loan stint has been challenging, with his only clean sheet coming in a 0-0 draw against Royal Antwerp last month. Prior to his move to Standard Liege, Bazunu had shown promise by winning three matches in the Premier League 2 with Southampton’s under-21s.
The Irish international has not featured for Southampton’s senior team since April 2024, when he suffered a significant Achilles injury. His recovery saw him return to action with Southampton’s under-21s in January, and there is potential for him to rejoin the first-team squad as the club competes in the Championship.
Southampton are keen to monitor Bazunu’s situation closely, as they consider him a valuable asset for their future plans. His development and fitness will be crucial as the club navigates the current season, with hopes of returning to the Premier League.
