Former Rochdale midfielder and Manchester United youth player – Joe Thompson Passes Away After Third Battle with Cancer

Joe Thompson

Joe Thompson, the former Rochdale midfielder and Manchester United youth player, passed away following a third battle with cancer. Diagnosed with stage four lymphoma, Thompson’s courageous fight against the disease was widely admired. His family announced his passing on Thursday, prompting an outpouring of tributes from former clubs and teammates.

Thompson was not only a celebrated footballer but also a devoted husband to Chantelle and father to two daughters, Lula and Athena Rae. His daughter Lula, aged 10, paid a heartfelt tribute to her father in a video shared by Manchester United on social media. The video highlighted key moments from Thompson’s career, including his unforgettable goal for Rochdale in 2018 that saved the club from relegation, following his second recovery from cancer. The footage also captured Thompson celebrating with Lula after the game at Spotland.

Lula said: “He always wanted to be known as a great man, but I can say my dad was the greatest man. The best dad to me and my sister Athena, and the best husband to my mummy, Chantelle. I love you so much, dad.”

Thompson’s journey in football began at Manchester United, where he was released at age 16 for being considered too small. He made his senior debut with Rochdale before moving to Tranmere Rovers. It was during his time at Tranmere in 2013 that he was first diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. Despite this setback, Thompson continued his career with stints at Wrexham, Southport, and Carlisle United before returning to Rochdale in 2016. His resilience was evident as he overcame cancer a second time and etched his name in Rochdale’s history with his crucial goal.

After retiring in 2019, Thompson faced cancer for a third time. In honor of his legacy, Rochdale’s players wore black armbands during their game against Altrincham. Other clubs where Thompson played also paid their respects.

Manchester United stated: “Everyone at Manchester United is deeply saddened at the passing of our much-loved friend and Academy alumni, Joe Thompson, at the age of 36. Joe’s wife, Chantelle, and two daughters are firmly in our thoughts at this immensely difficult time.”

Thompson’s life and career were marked by his determination and spirit, both on and off the pitch. His contributions to football and his charitable work will be remembered by many.
