Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Toti Gomes has signed a new long-term contract with the club. Toti has been rewarded for his performances upon returning to the club from a loan with Grasshopper, who play in the top tier in Switzerland. The 23 year-old was brought to Wolves from Portuguese side Estoril in September 2020 but spent last season with Grasshopper before being loaned out to the Zurich-based club for the first half of this season. He played the full 90 minutes against Brentford the following week but the return to fitness of Romain Saiss meant Toti was put on the substitute’s bench. Toti has been on the bench for the past couple of games.
Wolves Director Scott Sellars said: “This is a reward for Toti for the hard work he’s put in while at the club, especially while on loan at Grasshoppers. He’s worked very hard on his football and has really developed, then he got the opportunity to come to the club full time and has been excellent in everything he does. January was the first time he’d been to the club. We’d watched him out on loan and admired what he was doing, so we gave him the opportunity to come back here in January, and from minute one he showed he’s a professional and dedicated young man who works hard on his football. With any young player, you’re never sure until you put them in, but he’s certainly thrived in this environment and enjoyed the opportunity. He has taken control of his destiny with his performances, but that comes down to his hard work over a lot of years. We felt, after 18 months at Grasshoppers, all we needed was to see is if he could be a Premier League player. Now, he’s got to keep working hard now and try to take any opportunities which may arise in the first-team.”
