Will Still, the Belgian-born English coach, has taken the helm at Southampton with a clear vision to rejuvenate the club after a difficult season. Having signed a three-year deal, Still is committed to implementing a pragmatic approach that adapts to secure victories. His arrival on the south coast comes after leading RC Lens to an impressive eighth-place finish in Ligue 1. Still is eager to return to top-division football and has outlined his strategy to foster an enjoyable football environment for both players and supporters.
Will Still said: “High energy. I think I’ve always said I’d like to be proactive. I’d like our teams to dominate, to go and press, to be as aggressive as we can be. I don’t do that just for the fact of running and to say, oh, we’re going to be really aggressive. We want to be high up the pitch and in the opposition’s third as much as possible. It’s been entertaining. I want the players to enjoy it. I want the fans, obviously, to get on board and support it. But it’s (about) creating that environment where we’re here to win and we want to win a lot. We want to win consistently.”
Still added: “And by doing that, you set up an environment where people feel good in and people want to be. And that’s what I want to create. I want to be this high-energy team with good humans, good people who actually enjoy doing ultimately the best job in the world and winning, hopefully as much as we can.”
He continued: “As I left Lens, I hadn’t really expected to walk into the next thing as soon as this, but the opportunity came up. It allows you to get a feel of the training ground, get a feel of the stadium, try and understand what the supporters want, what the people inside the club want.”
Still has already begun acclimating to his new surroundings, having attended Southampton’s recent match against Arsenal and reviewing numerous past games. With four to five weeks before pre-season kicks off, he is focused on engaging with the players and understanding their dynamics to better prepare for the upcoming challenges. His proactive and high-energy approach aims to not only improve performance on the pitch but also to rekindle the passion and support of the fans, creating a vibrant atmosphere at St Mary’s Stadium.
