Unai Emery
Aston Villa is reportedly in discussions to extend the contracts of key players Youri Tielemans and Tyrone Mings, as the club looks to secure its core squad members for the future. According to the Daily Telegraph, the club is keen to reward Tielemans and Mings with new deals following their significant contributions to the team. This development comes as Villa aims to maintain its upward trajectory under manager Unai Emery.
Unai Emery said: “Last year was difficult for him because he needed time to adapt. He had good players in front of him, for example Douglas Luiz. But he always showed us his mentality, his skills. His versatility is also very important, playing as a number six, eight or a 10. Sometimes last year he even played on the left. This year he’s been really consistent. I think he’s one of our leaders on the field. Overall he’s an important player for us, very important.”
Tielemans, who joined Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in the summer of 2023, initially struggled to find his place in the team. However, his adaptability and consistent performances have made him a crucial part of Emery’s squad. The Belgian international’s ability to play in multiple midfield roles has been particularly valuable.
Meanwhile, Tyrone Mings, a former Villa captain, has made a strong return to the team after recovering from a severe knee ligament injury. Despite competition from Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres, and Axel Desasi, Mings remains a pivotal figure in Villa’s defense. His leadership and experience are seen as vital assets as the club continues to compete at the highest levels.
Aston Villa’s progress under Emery has been remarkable, with the team reaching the Champions League quarter-finals and the FA Cup semi-finals this season. Emery’s strategic vision and management have been instrumental in Villa’s success, and he is reportedly in advanced talks with Boubacar Kamara over a new contract as well.
However, the club faces financial challenges and may need to sell a “big-name” player to comply with Premier League spending regulations. Emi Martinez, the World Cup-winning goalkeeper, is rumored to be a potential departure due to significant interest from other clubs. Additionally, academy graduate Jacob Ramsey could be sold, although such a move would likely be unpopular with fans.
Despite these potential sales, Emery is determined to retain Morgan Rogers, who has attracted interest from Liverpool. Rogers, recently capped by England, has seen his value soar to over £100 million after joining Villa from Middlesbrough for around £15 million last year. Emery’s refusal to sell Rogers highlights the manager’s commitment to nurturing talent and building a competitive squad.
Villa is also exploring the possibility of signing Marco Asensio from PSG, with the Spanish international seen as a more feasible acquisition due to a lower expected transfer fee.
As Villa prepares for a crucial final-day clash against Manchester United, the club is hopeful of securing a top-five finish and Champions League qualification for a second consecutive season.
