A terrifying incident unfolded on Water Street in Liverpool when a car ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians, leaving several injured. The chaos ensued after a Ford Galaxy car, which had been tailgating an ambulance, emerged onto the crowded street. Amidst the panic, Liverpool fans displayed remarkable bravery as they attempted to prevent further harm.
Stefanie Ryder-Walker said: “We had been on The Strand for the parade and we were walking up Water Street after it had finished. The road was full of people and then we saw an ambulance trying to get through. My fiancé’s dad and others were telling people to move to the side of the road to let the ambulance through and the crowd parted. Then a car emerged from behind the ambulance.”
Stefanie Ryder-Walker added: “A woman who was stood right next to me was hit and thrown up into the air, she hit the bonnet and the windscreen and went over the car, landing on the other side. I ran to her and she was curled up in a ball with blood on her face. I applied pressure and pulled her out of the road before another man came to help her.”
Stefanie Ryder-Walker continued: “Ellis and a group of others ran after the car trying to stop it. They were smashing the windows and one guy managed to get into the back seat, trying to restrain the driver – but he was reversing into more people. I wanted to point out how utterly heroic the fans were who were there at the time. They put their lives on the line to try and stop that vehicle injuring more people, to try and protect each other.”
The incident occurred as fans were dispersing from a parade, with the road bustling with people. The driver of the car reportedly used the ambulance as cover to access the closed-off street. In the ensuing chaos, several fans, including Stefanie’s fiancé, Ellis Matthews, sprang into action, attempting to stop the car. Their efforts, including breaking windows and attempting to restrain the driver, were crucial in preventing further injuries.
Fortunately, despite the severity of the incident, no fatalities were reported. Eleven people remained hospitalized, but all were reported to be in stable condition. The quick response and selfless actions of the Liverpool fans were pivotal in minimizing the potential for greater harm.
This incident highlights the courage and solidarity of the Liverpool community, as fans came together to protect one another in a moment of crisis. The actions of these individuals serve as a testament to the spirit and resilience of the city’s supporters.
