Phil Fodens Ankle Injury and Mental Struggles Lead to England Squad Omission

pHIL Foden

Phil Foden, the Manchester City forward, has asked to be excluded from the upcoming England squad after sustaining an ankle injury. The 25-year-old has also been candid about his off-pitch mental struggles, which have impacted his performance this season. Foden’s decision to step back from international duties comes as he aims to focus on recovering both mentally and physically.

Pep Guardiola said: “It’s true, Phil said that and of course he has not been.. We want to help him, that’s the most important thing. He needs rest and it’s going to happen now after Sunday. I just want want want to help him.”

Thomas Tuchel told BBC Radio Five Live: “Phil is a little bit injured. He hasn’t had a good spell at the club since last camp, he struggled to get minutes, he struggled to be decisive. And given the circumstances with his ankle problems we both decided, Phil and I, decided it may be better to give him a bit of time off, let him breathe, clear his head, get rid of his ankle problems, and then be more refreshed at the Club World Cup, which I will also monitor and be close to.”

Foden has been open about his mental health, acknowledging that his struggles have affected his on-field performance. He mentioned that if everything was in order off the pitch, his game would likely improve. The ankle ligament damage has prevented him from playing regularly, and he requires a few weeks away from football to fully recover.

Guardiola confirmed that Foden would be included in the Club World Cup squad “in principle,” but emphasized that the priority is Foden’s well-being rather than his immediate performance. Foden had considered the Club World Cup as an opportunity to regain form but acknowledged the necessity of resting his ankle.

Tuchel, who has been in communication with Foden, expressed his admiration for the player’s talent and character. He noted that while Foden is experiencing a dip in form, there is no cause for concern given his youth and potential. Both Guardiola and Tuchel are committed to supporting Foden through this challenging period, ensuring he returns to his best both mentally and physically.
