A more robust Leicester City defence will increase the side’s confidence and improve performances. If the defence is more solid, Rodgers thinks belief will spread throughout the side and lead to a better performance on the ball too.
Brendan Rodgers said: “We need collectively to defend better and that raises the confidence. We’re not defending as well as we’ve done, and with very little preparation time and working time to be able to do that, that’s where we’ve suffered a bit. You’re virtually playing then recovering, so there hasn’t been a great deal of time. We certainly can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We need to be defensively more robust and not give away soft goals, and then from that your confidence grows, and then you can then look to play your football. It all comes together. You have to fundamentally defend well in order to attack well and that’s something we have to be better at.”
Although City sit in the bottom half, they are just five points behind fifth-placed Arsenal in what is a congested mid-table. Finishing in those spots remains the objective in spite of City’s less-than-impressive start.
Brendan Rodgers added: “It’s still very early. We look to the next game. Let’s see where we end up at the end of the season. I never like to get too carried away. If we can arrive into European football, with the competition in this league, that’s huge for us. It’s the same idea this season, but that’s a long, long way away.”
