AFC Bournemouth’s manager, Andoni Iraola, has been compelled to rely on young players this season due to a series of injuries affecting the squad, particularly in the new year. This situation presented an opportunity for Remy Rees-Dottin, who made his Premier League debut for the Cherries away at Newcastle. Additionally, he was an unused substitute in six other league matches and participated in the FA Cup third-round game against West Brom, coming off the bench. He also traveled with the team for their fourth-round clash against Everton.
Remy Rees-Dottin said: “I’m so grateful for all these opportunities that Al’s given me and the first team gaffer has given me. It’s definitely not something I’ve taken for granted. Looking into next season, I know the opportunities I’ve had this season and the experiences will definitely improve me a lot going into next season and my future as well.”
Rees-Dottin expressed his appreciation for the chances provided to him by the coaching staff, acknowledging the significance of these experiences in his development. He emphasized that the exposure to first-team football has not only benefited him but also the entire U21 squad.
Rees-Dottin continued: “You can still see the improvement in the whole squad just by maybe three or four of the 21s being with the first team and training with them. I think it’s really helped not only me and the people with the first team but the entire 21s squad.”
The young player’s comments highlight the positive impact of integrating youth players into the senior team environment. This integration has been further facilitated by AFC Bournemouth’s new performance centre, which allows the U21 squad to train alongside the first team.
Rees-Dottin added: “Being so close to the first team definitely pushes everyone to the next level. Everyone tries that little bit harder because you know there’s eyes on you all times, there’s a window that oversees the pitches. I think having the new performance centre is definitely a great thing for the club and a great thing for the 21s at the moment.”
The proximity of the training facilities has created a competitive atmosphere, motivating young players to strive for excellence and seize the opportunity to impress the first-team coaching staff. This strategic move by the club is seen as a significant step in nurturing young talent and ensuring a seamless transition to senior football.
