Aston Villa and Luton Town Pay Tribute to Former Goalkeeper Jake Findlay

Aston Villa Fans

Jake Findlay, a former goalkeeper for Aston Villa and Luton Town, passed away at the age of 70. Known for his contributions on the field and his post-retirement venture as a driving instructor, Findlay’s legacy extends beyond football. Both clubs have issued heartfelt tributes to commemorate his life and career.

Aston Villa said: “Aston Villa is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former player Jake Findlay, who has died at the age of 70. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Jake’s family and friends at this difficult time. Born John Williamson Findlay in Blairgowrie, Scotland, in July 1954, Jake joined Villa’s youth ranks in 1968 and was a member of the team which won the FA Youth Cup for the first time four years later. His final game for Villa was as a late substitute for Rimmer in the club’s 2-0 UEFA Cup home win against Gornik Zabrze in October 1977.”

Luton Town said: “It took a lot of pestering by Luton manager David Pleat though, to get Villa to release Jake to replace Milija Aleksic in 1979, but once he came to Kenilworth Road he became a terrace favourite and starred as the Hatters won promotion to Division One in 1982. An incredibly brave keeper who was never afraid to throw his body at opposing forwards, it was a badly-broken thumb that effectively ended his Luton career, as by the time he was fit, the Town had signed Les Sealey.”

Findlay’s career began at Aston Villa, where he joined the youth ranks in 1968 and contributed to the club’s first FA Youth Cup victory in 1972. Despite his talent, he found it challenging to secure a first-team spot due to the presence of established goalkeepers Jim Cumbes and Jimmy Rimmer. In 1979, he transferred to Luton Town, where he became a fan favorite and played a pivotal role in the team’s promotion to the top flight in the 1981-82 season. Unfortunately, his playing career was cut short by a fractured thumb in 1983.

After retiring from football, Findlay established the ‘Jake Findlay School of Motoring’ in Streetly, where he was as well-known for teaching young drivers as he was for his footballing prowess. His passion for sports continued as he became a prominent figure at Aston Manor Cricket Club and Streetly Cricket Club, contributing as a fundraiser and supporter.

The football community, including Aston Villa and Luton Town, mourns the loss of a dedicated sportsman and a cherished friend. His contributions to the clubs and the community will be fondly remembered.
