Manchester City Anticipates First-Team Promotion for Divin Mubama After Impressive Season

Manchester City Fans

Manchester City has expressed confidence in academy striker Divin Mubama, who has caught the club’s attention with his remarkable performances since joining from West Ham last summer. Despite an injury setback early in his City career, Mubama has demonstrated his potential by netting 15 goals in 14 academy matches, including five in three Premier League 2 play-off games. As a result, City is considering his elevation to first-team football next season, which could lead to a loan or permanent transfer.

Ben Wilkinson said: “We’ve got players in our team we’d expect not to see next year, they’re ready to make that step and he’s probably one of them. It’s trying to help with that next step and guide them in the right direction. What’s the best fit, what’s right for him. Because he’s not going to be playing under-21 football next season that’s for sure.”

Mubama’s journey at Manchester City began with a challenge due to an injury, but his return has been nothing short of impressive. His goal-scoring prowess in the academy has not gone unnoticed, earning him a debut goal for the City first team in the FA Cup in January and a Premier League debut against Ipswich later that month. The 20-year-old’s performance in the PL2 semi-final, where he scored twice against Manchester United, further solidified his readiness for the next level.

Wilkinson’s comments highlight the club’s strategy to ensure Mubama’s development aligns with his potential. The club is aware of the challenges young strikers face when transitioning to senior football, particularly in the Championship or League One. The experience of players like Liam Delap, who struggled initially on loan but eventually secured a significant transfer to Ipswich, serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in finding the right path for young talents.

Wilkinson explained: “We and other clubs have done a hell of a lot of research in the last few years in terms of what that first step should be and what level and position. It’s been notoriously hard for young strikers to go out on loan and succeed in the Championship or League One. It’s the reality of the real world, the demands of a modern day number nine – now you’re a 19, 20 year old number nine up against two big centre halves and the service isn’t great.”

The club’s careful consideration of Mubama’s next steps reflects their commitment to nurturing young talent while acknowledging the challenges of transitioning from academy to senior football. As Manchester City prepares for their PL2 final, all eyes will be on Mubama as he leads the line, with discussions about his future set to take place at the end of the season.
