Ilkay Gundogan Eyes Extended Stay at Manchester City Amid Stellar Form

Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan, the Treble-winning midfielder, has expressed his desire to remain at Manchester City, following a successful return to the club last summer after a stint with Barcelona. Despite earlier uncertainties about his future, Gundogan’s recent upturn in form has solidified his position in Pep Guardiola’s squad. The veteran midfielder’s contract now extends until 2026, and he is keen on continuing his career at City, citing his fitness and love for the club as key motivators.

Ilkay Gundogan said: “I have one year left on my contract, and I’m happy about that. Not just because I’m getting older, where every year is a long way off. But also because I absolutely love being at City. Honestly, I want to play football for several more years: because I feel absolutely ready for it, I’m very fit, and I take care of my body. I feel like I really enjoy football: not just another year, but at least two years, maybe even three or four. I’m not afraid of those thoughts, though; I’m more excited. But my body’s still cooperating, and Pep isn’t saying to me, ‘Hey, you’re falling off the playing field…'”

Gundogan’s commitment to maintaining his fitness has been evident, especially as Manchester City has improved their performances and results. While his extensive playing time was not always appreciated by fans during a challenging period from November to March, it underscores his dedication to self-care and longevity in the sport.

The midfielder’s relationship with Pep Guardiola has been instrumental in his return to City. When Gundogan faced challenges at Barcelona last year, it was Guardiola who facilitated his return to Manchester. Gundogan’s previous tenure at City also saw him involved in coaching within the academy, an experience that has sparked his interest in management. He has expressed enthusiasm for potentially working as Guardiola’s assistant in the future, recognizing the opportunity as a valuable stepping stone for a coaching career.

Ilkay Gundogan said: “I didn’t ask him, no. But there’s probably nothing better than starting out as Pep’s assistant. The examples of the past few years have shown that it can pave the way for a coaching career.”

Gundogan’s aspirations to extend his playing career and his interest in coaching highlight his enduring passion for football. His seamless integration back into Manchester City and his ambition to contribute both on and off the field underscore his value to the club.
