Nottingham Forest experienced a rollercoaster of emotions following their 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday. The result secured them a spot in European competition, marking a significant achievement after two seasons of battling relegation. However, the draw also dealt a blow to their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. With two games remaining, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo remains optimistic about their chances.
Morgan Gibbs-White said: “We put ourselves in the best situation possible. These past three or four games we’ve just not been good enough. It’s not been to our standard. We played good with the ball (against Leicester), but we can’t concede two goals like that – especially with our form. Throughout the season we’ve been so good at taking the lead and then seeing the game out. It’s just frustrating. It’s been a tough season, very demanding, especially when we’ve put ourselves in the positions we have. I can’t put a reason on (the drop-off). Fatigue? Tiredness? But we can’t make excuses because the fans deserve better. We’ve secured Europe, it’s incredible but we wanted more. Our and our fans’ expectations were Champions League a few games ago. None of us have been in this situation before. It’s down to experience, maybe, in these positions, but we’re new to it. We’re still building as a team and a club. If you’d have said at the start of the season we’d secure Europe with two games to go, we’d have snatched your hand off. We have to look at it in a positive way, but also recognise the opportunity was there.”
Gibbs-White’s candid assessment highlights the challenges Forest faced in maintaining their form during the crucial stages of the season. Despite their recent struggles, the team’s qualification for European football is a testament to their progress under Nuno Espirito Santo’s leadership. The Reds have shown resilience, and with two games left, they still have a chance to reach the Champions League.
Liam Delap said: “I played against Murillo and I was really impressed with him. He’s still young. He’s so fast and strong. He’s done really well. I’m going to go for Murillo. I really like what I’ve seen from him this season.”
Murillo’s absence due to a suspected hamstring injury was felt against Leicester, but his performances throughout the season have earned him praise. The Brazilian defender has been instrumental in Forest’s journey, and his partnership with Nikola Milenkovic has been a key factor in their success.
As the season draws to a close, Forest will look to solidify their defensive solidity, which has been a hallmark of their campaign. The upcoming match against West Ham United will be crucial in determining their final standing. With the possibility of Champions League football still within reach, the team will need to capitalize on every opportunity.
