Leicester City hope Jannik Vestergaard’s arrival will not be their last, but Brendan Rodgers admits the club’s transfer plans have had to be altered in the wake of the Dane’s imminent arrival. City are likely to announce Vestergaard as their fourth summer signing on Friday, bringing in the 29-year-old in a £14m move from Southampton. If City register him before midday on Friday, he will be able to feature in the Premier League opener against Wolves, and would be expected to partner Caglar Soyuncu in the centre of defence. But City have plans to sign more players, including a winger. City are short of one after Cengiz Under’s loan spell was not followed up, and the club are again on the lookout for a right-sided left-footed wide-man. Asked if he would want more players
Brendan Rodgers said: “Ideally we would. It’s a huge testament to the club and our planning, going back into last year, to get the players (Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare, Ryan Bertrand) in as early as we could. That’s really helped us this summer. We would like to add more if we could and we will see how the market goes. We know what we would like, but whether we can get that type of player or whether we can afford that type of player, we will have to wait. (Vestergaard’s arrival) doesn’t shift (the club’s transfer plans), but it certainly meant we went down a route that we hadn’t planned to. We did want a centre-half, I still did want another one in, but it may have been a younger one to come in and develop. But with Jonny (Evans) out for the unforeseeable future, and with Wesley Fofana’s injury, which is going to keep him out for a while, we felt we needed a starter. So to bring in a starter, and someone who gives the team a different profile as well, that was important. It still doesn’t take our mind off maybe one or two things that we want to do, and if we can do that, that’ll be great.”
Ayoze Perez is set to start on the right wing against Wolves on Saturday, after playing there in the Community Shield. Marc Albrighton is an alternative option, while Ricardo Pereira can be pushed forward from right-back.
