Aston Villa secured a hard-fought victory against Bournemouth, with Youri Tielemans’ header from John McGinn’s corner in the 12th minute proving decisive. The win highlighted Villa’s defensive strength and strategic play, as emphasized by manager Unai Emery in his post-match press conference.
Unai Emery said: “Very difficult match. We had to feel defensively strong and we did. We created chances to score and to make chances. How we prepared and played, and the fans supported us, I think we have to be proud of our work.”
Emery continued to reflect on the team’s performance, noting the importance of maintaining focus throughout the game.
Emery said: “We started very well and we dominated the first 15 minutes. After it, I felt some relax. I was getting our players to play seriously and respect them, focusing on the game plan we planned before. In the dressing room we spoke about it. We didn’t concede a lot, but we created chances. We did what we planned and spoke about in the second half.”
Tielemans’ role this season has been pivotal, with Emery highlighting his adaptability and consistency in various positions.
Emery said: “His qualities and how we are trying to get of him in our structure is very important. Last year, he was adapting and progressively getting better. But he didn’t play like this year and also played in different positions too. This year he has been more consistent playing as a number eight, or a 10. Those positions are something he can dominate.”
The manager also expressed the significance of Villa Park as a fortress, attributing much of the team’s success to the support of their fans.
Emery said: “Very important. We are feeling so, so strong. We are transmitting our fans their wishes. They are helping us. Here at Villa Park we can feel that this is our fortress. The supporters always help us.”
Emery’s tactical adjustments, including player swaps, were aimed at maintaining the team’s momentum and focus.
Emery said: “I was in the same way when we finished the first half because we started very well, we dominated and scored a goal, but we stopped a little bit. We started to play a bit more back passes. Doing back passes for one objective, to try to stop them and then progress [is fine] but we weren’t progressing like we needed and how we planned before.”
Looking ahead, Emery emphasized the importance of focusing on each upcoming match, starting with Bournemouth.
Emery said: “Bournemouth, next week. Bournemouth. Phwoar. So, so difficult, Bournemouth. And then, we’ll see. We’ll see. Today, finished. Now Bournemouth. Today, before the match, if we were thinking, ok, the next match is Bournemouth, the next match is Tottenham, Manchester United… if we weren’t winning today, forget it! Completely!”
Aston Villa’s victory over Bournemouth not only showcased their defensive prowess but also underscored the importance of strategic planning and fan support. With upcoming matches against formidable opponents, Emery remains focused on maintaining consistency and securing a potential spot in European competitions.
