Pablo Hernandez is backing his former Leeds United team-mate Rodrigo to succeed at the Euros – if he is needed. Spain are currently in the midst of a Covid-19 scare, with Leeds defender Diego Llorente testing positive for the virus after Sergio Busquets returned a positive test on Sunday. With the squad in self-isolation as per Spanish and Uefa protocols, coach Luis Enrique has called Rodrigo up to a ‘parallel’ squad which now features 17 players, including a number of under-21s who stepped up for Tuesday night’s final warm-up match against Lithuania.
Pablo Hernandez said: “I did not expect it, it has been a surprise for everyone. I suppose that Luis Enrique will want to have more players in case there are other positive ones. [Rodrigo] has played the majority of games as a [more] defensive midfielder with Bielsa and it has been where he has enjoyed the most. In addition to being a great player, he can play on the wing as well. In any of those positions, he can do well. He has shown also that he can score and could be important for the National Team.”
