Chelsea sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have disclosed that the teenager has reneged on a long-term contract extension that the Blues believed had been all but agreed upon. The club is now seeking a solution regarding the situation, and the expectation is that Acheampong will not pull on a blue shirt until a resolution materializes. Despite this latest development, Chelsea wants to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future, but his contract expires in 18 months. The Blues have seen several academy graduates depart over recent years and do not want that to continue.
The latter even named Acheampong in his answer. He emphasized the importance of promoting players from their academy.
The Chelsea representative said, “It’s really important for us to bring through players. Obviously, over time, there will be a standard and a level that makes it challenging. I think if we look at the recent history – even the last few years when we’ve been here – the minutes for academy players, the debuts, stacks up against any other team in the Premier League. There’s not teams that are out there who are playing more academy players for significant minutes. So, absolutely, we’re investing in the academy, we continue to invest in the academy, and we’ve got a plan for the academy. We want to absolutely have the best academy of the future.”
