Christian Eriksen, who joined Manchester United on a free transfer in July 2022, had played just four minutes of football this season prior to the international break, stepping off the bench in the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool. Few expected that to be the last game United would play without Eriksen in the starting lineup. After playing a full 90 minutes against a League One side, many assumed he would not start the weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace, with Manuel Ugarte waiting to make his full Premier League debut. However, Erik ten Hag surprised many by sticking with Eriksen in midfield.

Ahead of kick-off, Ten Hag explained his decision:

Erik Ten Hag  said “That is one of the reasons [wanting continuity], yes. There is a connection. I didn’t want to interrupt, but also Manuel needs some time to be integrated and to get used to English football. It will go quickly, but it is more to keep the connection in midfield as it is. Manuel will be great for us. We hope to integrate him slowly, but in a good way.”

By half-time, Ten Hag’s decision was vindicated, as United dominated possession, created numerous chances, and Eriksen played a key role in helping them retain the ball. Renowned as a No.10, Eriksen has largely operated as a deep-lying playmaker in the No.8 position since arriving at United.

Eriksen’s recent return to form, after a difficult start to the season and limited game time in the second half of last season, has been positive. Despite initial doubts about United’s decision to hand him a three-year deal in 2022, Eriksen has remained professional, even when frustrated by his limited minutes earlier this year. Ahead of the victory at Southampton, Ten Hag praised Eriksen.

Erik Ten Hag said “Christian had enjoyed a good pre-season and had performed well in training, admitting he had earned his place to prove himself once again.”

Eriksen’s performance against Crystal Palace was a reminder of his quality, showcasing his ability to advance the ball and influence the game. While it is likely he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, he can still play an important role for United before then.
