Bernardo Silva insists he will play anywhere as he tries to help Portugal to World Cup success over the next month. Bernardo has been in great form for Manchester City this season, predominantly playing in a midfield two alongside Kevin De Bruyne, while also being used on the wing as Pep Guardiola rotates his starting XI to accommodate his different attacking options. Portugal have similar versatility in their attacking ranks, with Bernardo able to be used in midfield or on the wings. However, Bernardo has told a press conference that if it was down to him, he would be a regular in the centre of the pitch as that is where he feels at his best.
Bernardo Silva said: “I’ve been playing in various positions lately, but my coaches know where I feel best. I feel better playing in the middle, people know, but I’m available to play wherever the coach sees fit. I made my career as a midfielder, so it’s normal that it’s more natural for me.”
Bernardo also admitted that there is an advantage to holding the World Cup in the middle of the season as he feels fitter and better prepared for a high-stakes tournament compared to the usual end-of-season scheduling.
Bernardo Silva explained: “I feel better physically than at the end of a season. I feel good physically and ready to help the team. Most feel the same, because it’s different to play an important competition in November than in July after a 60-game season. We are very ambitious, very confident, knowing that we have come for a special, short and unpredictable competition. There are other great selections here. This is a good generation and the Portuguese expect a lot from us. We are ready, we came to win. We know it’s difficult, but we came with a lot of ambition.”
