Brendan Rodgers has spoken about the window and potential business that City could do over the last couple of months, hinting that it could be a busy one for the club. It is understood that they are looking to bring in three players to be regular starters. As we close in on the transfer window, here’s a look at what the City boss has had to say on any potential deals;
Brendan Rodgers said: “There’s no doubt we need to make changes come the summer. We’ll have been working together for over three years come then, so we will need to refresh the squad, and that’s something we will need to do in the summer. You might be looking up to five or six players. It’s only natural. We are nearly at the end of a cycle of working for three years together. By the time we get to the summer, it will be three-and-a-half years. You need to reintroduce more hunger to the team, more quality to the team. If we’re going to compete, we have to do that, that’s the reality. You can’t continue with the same players season after season. For the players themselves, they need competition.”
The City boss also dropped a hint on one of the areas he will be looking at come the summer after the defeat against Liverpool. A game which saw City concede from a corner.
Brendan Rodgers said: “It’s been an ongoing issue for us, like I’ve always said, whether it’s zonal or man to man it’s been a problem for us. We’ve defended it better of recent but it’s definitely an area that come the summer time we’ll have to improve on, in terms of profile of player, and having more dominance in there.”
Rodgers has also hinted that while he has improved his squad during his time at the club, this summer will see a focus on improving the starting lineup.
Brendan Rodgers said: “For the squad to evolve and become better you need to obviously add better players. The club have been super supportive since I’ve been here. With funds tight, we were unable to bring any in so it puts you in a position where primarily you’re working with the same groups of players. In saying that, we have improved the squad bringing in the players we did bring in. However, it’s looking to improve the team which will be important for us. The team needs that healthy shake-up. I believe that when I came into here there was a group of players who were hungry and wanted to prove themselves. We’ve lost two of those in Harry Maguire and Ben Chilwell but the team have continued to progress. From that point, we’ve won the FA Cup and the players are now in better conditions in their lives, which is great. They deserve that, but you’ve got to keep improving.”
