Antonio Conte believes it will take more than one transfer window to turn Tottenham Hotspur back into challengers in the Premier League. He was asked whether making an investment in the winter window could be worth the outlay as Tottenham chase that fourth Champions League spot to return to the heights they once stood upon.
Antonio Conte said: “Honestly, honestly, I have been in football for many years to tell you that for qualification for the Champions League you build in the years, not in only two or three months or in only one transfer market. If we think this, football is not this way. At this moment there are important teams and they created important squads this season. It will be very difficult as I said to you before to get a place in the Champions League, it means somebody has to fail and it must be a big fail to get a place free in the Champions League. Otherwise I think there are four big, big teams who are favourites at this moment and then there are other teams that are trying to build with important investment this year to reduce this gap. But it is not only one transfer market or if you invest money and you have a switch in this way. Football is complicated. It is not only money. You have to build in the year to build something important. I am here to do this but I know it is going to be very difficult because everybody tries to ask something about the Champions League, but I want to be very honest with everybody and to tell them we have an important job, a good job to do, to start to build something important we need time and patience. Now I am sure of that after I made my evaluation in these two months.”
With the January transfer window opening on Saturday, Conte’s talks with the club’s hierarchy will come late in the day but he admitted it was because he asked for more time at a previous meeting as he was still learning about his players.
Antonio Conte said: “I asked for time to the club to make the right evaluation, because we had a meeting one month later when I was in charge. It was not the right time. I was not honest to give information or to take a right evaluation after only one month. I asked to have another meeting to be sure 100 per cent and to make my evaluation about the whole situation and now I am ready for this reason and waiting for the meeting with the club to speak about this. The meeting can tell you everything but can also tell nothing.”
