Ivory Coast have named Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Willy Boly in their squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. Boly hasn’t played a single minute of Premier League football this season due to ongoing muscular problems. Lage left Boly out of the squad for the first two weeks of December in the hope of helping the defender overcome his long-term injury issues. After reclaiming his spot on the bench at Manchester City and Brighton, Boly wasn’t able to join up with Wolves’ squad for the draw with Chelsea on Sunday and Lage wasn’t willing to explain the 30-year-old’s latest absence.
Bruno Lage said: “Every time I try to answer all the questions, but I think at the moment I will give more time and space so we can say something more clear about Boly. I’ve been struggling since the first day because we have just three central defenders. They are doing a fantastic job.”
Ivory Coast begin their AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea on January 12, before facing Sierra Leone on January 16 and Algeria on January 20. It remains unclear when Boly and Romain Saiss – who has been called up by Morocco – will depart Wolves to begin international duty.
